Standardization of New Sliver Probe for Cooling Power Test of Polymer Quenchant

Technical committee for Japanese industrial standard of heat treating oils has studied on the new method for testing cooling power of aqueous quenchants. This method employed the cooling curve test of a new sliver rod probe, which has a metal-sheathed thermocouple at its geometrical center. The experimental study has clarified that this probe has the higher sensitivity and excellent durability. In order to standardize this probe for cooling power test of aqueous quenchants, the repeatability and reproducibility of test results etc. have been studied. D.O.P. (Di-2-ethylthexyl Phthalate) was used as reference quenching fluid for initial calibration and for periodic calibration verification of the probe and system. In addition, 10% brine was used to check the response capability of the probe and system to the sudden change of temperature. These procedures are established according to the experimental investigation. This new test method is going to be built in the revised version of JIS K 2242 "Heat treating oils" as the cooling power test method for aqueous quenchants.

Working group on cooling power test of quenchants of Japanese Heat Treatment Society has studied on the new method for testing cooling power of aqueous quenchants. This method employed the cooling curve test of a new sliver rod probe, which has a metal-sheathed thermocouple at its geometrical center. The experimental study has clarified that the new silver probe has more excellent durability than the JIS silver probe employed for cooling power test of heat treating oils (JIS K 2242) and an aluminum alloy probe. Good repeatability and reproducibility of the cooling curves during polymer quenching have been confirmed. This new method is useful especially for cooling power test of aqueous quenchants used for solution heat treatment of aluminum alloys. This new silver rod probe is expected to be adopted for the revised version of JIS K 2242 as the cooling power test method for aqueous quenchants.

In this paper, the carburizing-quenching process of carbon steel is analyzed with computer simulation which is based on the metallo-thermo-mechanical theory and finite element analysis coupled temperature, phase transformation and stress/strain fields. The residual stresses and distortion of a steel cylinder during carburizing quenching process were predicted and compared with experimental data. From the prediction results, improvement of hardness and strength of the cylinder component in carburizing-quenching process was verified.

Laser-induced forward transfer(LIFT)is a direct-writing technique capable of depositing a single dot smaller than the laser wavelength at small shot energy through the laser-induced dot transfer(LIDT)*** deposit a single nanodot in a single shot of laser irradiation,a liquid nanodrop is transferred from donor to receiver and finally solidified via a solid–liquid–solid(SLS)*** conventional LIDT experiments,multi-shots with step scanning have been used to form array ***,interference laser processing can achieve an arrayed process and generate a periodic structure in a single *** this study,a femtosecond laser interference pattern was first applied to LIDT,and an array of nanodots was successfully deposited in a single shot,producing the following unit structures:a single dot,adjoining dots,and stacking *** diameter of the smallest nanodot was 355 nm,and the narrowest gap between two adjoining nanodots was 17.2 *** LIDT technique produces high-purity,catalyst-free that do not require post-cleaning or alignment *** these significant advantages,LIDT can expand the usability of nanodots in a wide range of fields.

Computer vision techniques, in conjunction with acquisition through remote cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), offer promising non-contact solutions to civil infrastructure condition assessment. The ultimate goal of such a system is to automatically and robustly convert the image or video data into actionable information. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in computer vision techniques as they apply to the problem of civil infrastructure condition assessment. In particular, relevant research in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and structural engineering is presented. The work reviewed is classified into two types: inspection applications and monitoring applications. The inspection applications reviewed include identifying context such as structural components, characterizing local and global visible damage, and detecting changes from a reference image. The monitoring applications discussed include static measurement of strain and displacement, as well as dynamic measurement of displacement for modal analysis. Subsequently, some of the key challenges that persist toward the goal of automated vision-based civil infrastructure and monitoring are presented. The paper concludes with ongoing work aimed at addressing some of these stated challenges.

The Implementation of Decision Support System for Realizing Effective Usability of CNC Operator Knowledge Capturing System

This article describes experimental evaluations of the authors＇ previous studies on the knowledge-based system （KBS） aimed at capturing and managing CNC （Computer Numerical Control） operator knowledge. The proposed KBS follow thinking steps of CNC operators when they assess machining parameters described in the CAM （Computer Aided Manufacturing） file before proceeding to CNC machining processes. Also, the decision support system equipped with expert system （ES） has been proposed to realize efficient knowledge capturing system and effective usability of captured knowledge, and to recommend actions and decisions. From the viewpoint of providing useful information, the KBS should be aware of context or constraints in which the user has to deal with. In this study, the usefulness of DSS （Decision Support System） and ES is experimentally evaluated using real cases. Comparing the results of the testing participants with and without the DSS and ES, the effectiveness and usefulness were demonstrated. In addition, it was shown that the proposed system is also useful to narrow the discrepancies between CAM and CNC operators, focusing on CNC milling operations.

Research has been continually growing toward the development of image-based structural health monitoring tools that can leverage deep learning models to automate damage detection in civil ***,these tools are typically based on RGB images,which work well under ideal lighting conditions,but often have degrading performance in poor and low-light *** the other hand,thermal images,while lacking in crispness of details,do not show the same degradation of performance in changing lighting *** potential to enhance automated damage detection by fusing RGB and thermal images together within a deep learning network has yet to be *** this paper,RGB and thermal images are fused in a ResNET-based semantic segmentation model for vision-based inspections.A convolutional neural network is then employed to automatically identify damage defects in *** model uses a thermal and RGB encoder to combine the features detected from both spectrums to improve its performance of the model,and a single decoder to predict the *** results suggest that this RGB-thermal fusion network outperforms the RGB-only network in the detection of cracks using the Intersection Over Union(IOU)performance *** RGB-thermal fusion model not only detected damage at a higher performance rate,but it also performed much better in differentiating the types of damage.
