Bacterial infection is considered to be one of the most critical health issues of the world. It is essential to overcome this problem by the development of new drugs. Marine organisms as corals, sponges, seaweeds, and other are an incredible source of novel pharmacologically active compounds. Herein, the antimicrobial activity (extract/fractions) of the invasive stony coralTubastraea coccinea was evaluated by the disk diffusion method against 21 microbial strains (ATCC and clinical strains). Micro broth dilution was used to determinate the MIC of the fractions that showed antimicrobial activity by the disk diffusion method. Bioautography assay was also performed. Our results showed that the n-butanol (BF) and aqueous fractions (AF) showed activity against ATCC strains Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 31.25 and 250 μg/mL),Salmonella typhimurium (MIC 125 and 500 μg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL), respectively. Moreover, BF fraction was also effective against the clinical strains S. aureus(MIC 62.5 μg/mL), Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase—KPC (MIC 125 μg/mL), Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus—MRSA (MIC 125 μg/mL) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis—VRE (MIC 62.5 μg/mL). The ratio MBC/MIC reinforces the bactericidal profile of BF fraction. The bioautography assay of BF fraction showed the presence of antimicrobial components at Rf0.55.

Self-care actions for the maintenance of the arteriovenous fistula:An integrative review

Objective:To identify self-care actions for the maintenance of arteriovenous fistula of renal ***:An integrative review study was conducted and literature were searched in Medline/PubMed,Scopus,CINAHL LILACS,BdeNF and SciELO Library databases using the descriptors chronic renal insufficiency,arteriovenous fistula,self-care,and *** inclusion criteria were that the documents be written in Portuguese,English,and Spanish,full text available,published in the last five years,and that they address the research *** articles,theses,dissertations,editorials of nonscientific journals,and research studies that did not follow the necessary methodological rigor were *** were analyzed with the IRAMUJTEQ ***:Fifteen articles were selected and comprised the final *** classes of self-care actions emerged from the text segments analysis and grouped into three categories:(1)Self-care actions that maintain the arteriovenous fistula;(2)Self-care actions for the prevention and the monitoring of complications with arteriovenous fistula;(3)Self-care actions directed at the perioperative period of arteriovenous fistula ***:The results allowed us to identify important care for the maintenance of arteriovenous fistula *** self-care actions identified in this study can guide a nursing care policy for implementation with protocols that help identify problems related to self-care actions and,thus,subsidize the development of actions aimed at the renal ***,more studies with high levels of evidence that identify self-care actions with arteriovenous fistula and the factors involved in its implementation are needed.

Dietary Practices and Anthropometric Profile of Professional Male Surfers

Aims： To identify dietary practices together with anthropometric variables of a group of professional suffers. Subjects： Participants of a National Surf Championship in Brazil. Evaluations：（1） Anthropometric measures, indexes and calculations （body mass, height, arm span, body circumferences and nine skinfold thicknesses, arm spam/height ratio, waist-to-hip-ratio, conicity index and % body fat）; （2） One 24h food-recall, describing all the food and drinks consumed at the previous day, and analyzed for energy, macro-nutrients, some micro-nutrients and food groups. The values were compared with some references and position statements and with the Brazilian Food Guide; （3） The basal and daily energy expenditure was estimated from specific equations; the energy intake was estimated from the information on diet and the energy balance was estimated from the difference between these values. Main results： The intake of carbohydrate is below the position statements （2.5-9.7g/kg and 6-10g/kg body weight, respectively）. Possibly the intake of supplements such as maltodextrin fulfilled the requirements （30.3% of the athletes referred the intake of this supplement）; The intake of BCAA （Branched-Chain Amino Acids） showed to be high （24.2% of the athletes）; The low intake of vegetables possibly contributes to the low intake of micronutrients （0.0-6.0 servings, against the recommendation of 4-5 servings）; The high intake of fried food （added lipid = 0.0-5.9 servings, against the recommendation of 1.0-2.0 servings） overlapped healthy habits such as beans and nuts consumption （0.0-13.6 servings against the recommendation of 1.0 serving）; The percentage of body fat seems to be similar to swimmers （around 12% of body weight）. As a conclusion, the dietary practices of suffers in the day prior a competition need to be improved, especially with respect to carbohydrates and lipids. Methodology for definition of the Three-Dimensional Geodesic Structures in the Olinda＇s Historical Site

It is shown to be a relevant study involving terrestrial methods of measurement, such as： forward and backward intersections, geometric leveling, trigonometric leveling with short distance targeted and spatial positioning GNSS methods, for the definition of field reference points and field-object points located in rough terrain. The geodesic structures were implemented in the Historic Site of Olinda employing GNSS （global navigation satellite system） receivers, total stations and digital level. The historical site of Olinda was recorded by UNESCO as Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The study area is located in the center of the busiest site with a quite roughly relief. This area has been studied since 2007 involving Research of Scientific Initiation and Pos-Graduation Course. This paper aims to present the realized experiments for the implementation and definition of geodesic structures in environments with very rough relief, including large old houses and historic monuments.

Food irradiation has the purpose of destroying insects or microorganisms, thereby increasing the safety and shelf life of foods. Flavonoids are ubiquitous plant secondary products with radical scavenger ability. In the present study their antioxidant stability after gamma irradiation was evaluated. The flavonoids showed fast scavenger ability measured with the 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) after high doses of radiation. The low damage caused by irra- diation on antioxidant capacity of the flavonoids shows their potential use in combating chemical oxidation of bio- molecules in irradiated foods.

Goat whey is an industry-discarded dairy by-product that has interesting nutritional value and a nutrient composition with important functional potential,where proteins have a high biological value and play an important role in the organism’s ***,the aim of this study was to identify,quantify,concentrate and investigate the capacity of goat whey proteins to perform different biological activities and to evaluate their acute *** proteins were quantified and identified by Bradford,Kjehdal and SDS-PAGE *** activity was performed against Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella spp.,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli microorganisms and showed MIC ranging from 15 to 120μg mL-1,with the highest inhibition for *** *** activity was performed against human malignant melanoma cells and their proliferation inhibition was up to 66.8%within 72 h of *** highest antioxidant capacity was obtained at concentration 2 mg that showed 29.69%of inhibition of DPPH radical *** acute toxicity test was performed using Artemia franciscana larvae in which whey proteins were able to preserve larval survival throughout ***,we can conclude that goat’s whey has proteins that can play a positive effect on health,with antimicrobial activity and without *** present study highlights the great potential of goat’s whey to be developed as a safe biopreservative or as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

Removal of Metribuzin by Ozonation:Effect of Initial Concentration and pH

Herbicides are chemical compounds capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of certain plants and they have been frequently detected in natural waters. Advanced treatments, including those using ozone, have been used in order to remove herbicides from different types of water with good treatment efficiency. The efficiency of ozonation, an oxidative process, in the removal of persistent compounds is affected by several factors, such as pH and the concentration of the contaminant. The compound metribuzin, the herbicide investigated in this study, is persistent and mobile in the environment with a high potential for transport through soils and thus it can reach the groundwater. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different pH conditions (2.5, 5.5 and 12.0) and initial concentrations of metribuzin (20, 50 and 100 ppm) on the removal of this herbicide from water using the ozonation process. In order to identify the possible effect of these two variables on the ozonation treatment, the concentration of metribuzin was determined by spectrophotometry UV-vis spectrophotometer. The results were used to evaluate the best conditions for the ozonation treatment. The ozonation conditions which provided the highest metribuzin removal efficiency (86.5% ± 0.3%) were pH 12.0 and an initial metribuzin concentration of 20 ppm. The findings indicate that oxidation with ozone is effective for the removal of metribuzin from aqueous solutions under the conditions studied.

Antimicrobial Activity of a Formulation of <i>Libidibia ferrea</i>L. against Microorganisms of the dental Biofilm

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the extract of Libidibia ferrea L. (228.022-INPA) and a mouthwash formulation against microorganisms of the dental biofilm. The extract of Libidibia ferrea L. was prepared and formulated with an alcohol-free mouthwash. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration—MIC was determined by microdilution and cell viability was evaluated through fluorescence. The MICs for the extract were 4.375 μg/mL (Streptococcus mutans), 3.750 μg/mL (Streptococcus oralis), 4.375 μg/mL (Lactobacillus casei). In contrast, for the mouthwash, the MICs were 6.000 μg/mL (bacteriostatic against Streptococcus mutans and bactericidal against Streptococcus oralis). In 1.250 μg/mL of the extract, the number of viable cells measured by fluorescence tests was 16.47% and 14.12% for Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei, respectively. For the mouthwash (1.000 μg/mL), 20.60% of viable cells for Streptococcus mutans, and 9.60% for Lactobacillus casei were observed. It can be concluded that the extract and its mouthwash containig Libidibia ferrea L. showed antibacterial activity against microorganisms from the dental biofilm.

Influence of Concentrate in the Diet on the Metabolic, Biochemical, and Endocrine Profile of Buffalo Heifers

The objective of this study was to evaluate the profile of the main serum biochemical variables in buffalo heifers receiving diets with different concentrations of concentrate. Twenty buffalo heifers of the Murrah breed, aged six to eight months, were randomly assigned to four groups, with five replicates each, to be adapted to levels of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of concentrate in the diet, composed of sugarcane (bulk) and concentrated feed based on wheat, corn, and soybean meal. The experimental diets were constituted in the proportion “bulk: concentrate”, based on dry matter, of “80:20” (Treatment 1), “60:40” (Treatment 2), “40:60” (Treatment 3), and “20:80” (Treatment 4). Biomarkers were evaluated for energy, protein, mineral, and endocrine profiles, as well as enzymatic activity. A positive linear effect was observed for Final Body Weight. In the energy profile, there was a positive linear effect for total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol and a quadratic effect for plasma glucose. In the protein profile, a quadratic effect was observed for the urea: creatinine ratio and a positive linear effect for total protein and albumin. For the enzymatic activity, only the variable gamma-glutamyltransferase presented a quadratic effect. In the mineral profile, a quadratic effect was observed for calcium levels and a positive linear effect for phosphorus levels and negative for chlorine levels. In the endocrine profile, no statistical differences were observed. Diet with until 80% of concentrate does not negatively influence biochemical parameters that represent the profile of energy, protein, mineral and thyroid hormones for growing buffalo heifers and favors the performance of the animals.

The present study reports a physicochemical comparison of shade-grown and sun-grown coffee beans, under unripe, rip and roasted-ripe conditions, using electrical conductivity measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, the assessed physicochemical parameters were compared with organoleptic evaluations based on the Coffee Quality Institute protocol. The values found for electrical conductivity, leached potassium, and stable free radicals were respectively 29%, 31%, and 350% higher for shade-grown coffee beans, whereas polyphenol oxidase enzymatic activity was 23% lower. By contrast, FTIR and HPLC measurements identified higher chlorogenic acid and lipid contents in sun-grown coffee beans. Importantly, the sensorial grade attributed to roasted-ripe grains was 12% higher for sun-grown coffee. Our findings suggest that shade-grown coffee beans have undergone microorganismal activity and undesired fermentation during cultivation, which resulted in lower coffee quality. A correlation between a set of selected physicochemical properties and organoleptic properties was robustly established and could be used in the development of future coffee bean quality control protocols.
