Impact of water scarcity on spruce and beech forests

One of the greatest threats posed by ongoing climate change may be regarded the drought caused by changes in precipitation distribution. The aim of presented study was to characterize reactions to dry conditions and conditions without drought stress on gross primary production (GPP) and net ecosystem production (NEP) of spruce and beech forests, as these two species dominate within the European continent. Daily courses of GPP and NEP of these two species were evaluated in relation to an expected decrease in CO2 uptake during dry days. The occurrence of CO2 uptake hysteresis in daily production was also investigated. Our study was performed at Bily Kriz(spruce) and Stitna(beech) mountain forest sites during 2010–2012 period. We applied eddy covariance technique for the estimation of carbon fluxes, vapor pressure deficit and precipitation characteristics together with the SoilClim model for the determination of drought conditions, and the inverse of the Penman–Monteith equation to compute canopy conductance. Significant differences were found in response to reduced water supply for both species. Spruce reacts by closing its stomata before noon and maintaining a reduced photosynthetic activity for the rest of the day, while beech keeps its stomata open as long as possible and slightly reduces photosynthetic activity evenly throughout the entire day. In the spruce forest, we found substantial hysteresis in the light response curve of GPP. In the beech forest, the shape of this curve was different: evening values exceeded morning values.

We applied KF Particle, a Kalman Filter package for secondary vertex finding and fitting, to strange and open charm hadron reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions in the STAR experiment. Compared to the conventional helix swimming method used in STAR, the KF Particle method considerably improved the reconstructed Λ, Ω, and D~0 significance. In addition, the Monte Carlo simulation with STAR detector responses could adequately reproduce the topological variable distributions reconstructed in real data using the KF Particle method, thereby retaining substantial control of the reconstruction efficiency uncertainties for strange and open charm hadron measurements in heavy-ion collisions.

Field-emission electron gun for a MEMS electron microscope

A damping boundary condition for atomistic-continuum coupling

The minimization of spurious wave reflection is a challenge in multiscale coupling due to the difference of spatial resolution between atomistic and continuum regions. In this study, a new damping condition is presented for eliminating spurious wave reflection at the interface between atomistic and continuum regions. This damping method starts by a coarse–fine decomposition of the atomic velocity based on the bridging scale method. The fine scale velocity of the atoms in the damping region is reduced by applying nonlinear damping coefficients. The effectiveness of this damping method is verified by one-and two-dimensional simulations.

Effect of a Hybrid Zinc Stearate-Silver System on the Properties of Polylactide and Its Abiotic and the Biotic Degradation and Antimicrobial Activity Thereof

This work investigates the degradation and properties of a thermoplastically prepared composite comprising a polylactide/ hybrid zinc stearate-silver system. The influence of the zinc stearate-silver system on the properties of the composite is investigated by electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and tensile tests. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activities of the systems are examined. The degradation behaviour of the composites is studied in both abiotic and biotic （composting） environments at an elevated temperature of 58 ℃. The results reveal good dispersion of the additive in the PLA matrix, a stabilizing effect exerted by the same on the polylactide matrix during processing, and slight reduction in glass transition temperature. The zinc stearate-silver component also reduces brittleness and extends elongation of the composite. Abiotic hydrolysis is not significantly affected, which is in contrast with pure PLA, although mineralization during the early stage of biodegradation increases noticeably. The composite exhibits antimicrobial activity, even at the lowest dosage of the zinc stearate/silver component （1 wt%）. Moreover, Ag and Zn contents were found to be present in the composite during abiotic hydrolysis, which was demonstrated by minimal diffusion of Ag ions from the matrix and very extensive washing of compounds that contained Zn.

A new oxidovanadium(Ⅳ) Schiff base complex containing asymmetric tetradentate ONN0O0Schiff base ligand:Synthesis,characterization,crystal structure determination,thermal study and catalytic activity

After synthesis of an asymmetric tetradentate ONN＇O＇ Schiff base ligand （H2L） followed by reaction of the synthesized H2L with an equimolar mixture of methanolic solutions of the VO（acac）2, a new oxidovanadium（IV） Schiff base complex （VOL） was synthesized. The Schiff base ligand and its complex were characterized by FT-IR and UV-vis spectra and C, H, N analysis, The crystal structure of VOL was also determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. The VOL complex crystallizes in monoclinic space group Cc. The Schiffbase ligand acts as a tetradentate ligand through its two＇iminic nitrogens and two phenolic and acetylacetonate oxygens. Thermogravimetric analysis of the VOL showed that it decomposes in two steps and converts to mixed vanadium oxides at 477℃. In addition, thermal decomposition of the VOL complex in air at 660 ℃ leads to formation of V2O5 nanoparticles with the average size estimated from XRD 49 nm. The catalytic activity of the VOL complex was investigated in the epoxidation reaction and different reaction parameters were optimized. The results showed that the cyclic alkenes were efficiently converted to the corresponding epoxides, whereas the VOL did not appreciably convert the linear alkenes.

The atmospheric pressure plasma jet （APPJ） was used to enhance the sensitivity of industrially important polyaniline （PANI） for detection of organic vapors from amides. The gas sensing mechanism of PANI is operating on the basis of reversible protonation or deprotonation, whereas the driving force to improve the sensitivity after plasma modifications is unknown. Herein we manage to solve this problem and investigate the sensing mechanism of atmospheric plasma treated PANI for vapor detection of amides using urea as a model. The results from various analytical techniques indicate that the plausible mechanism responsible for the improved sensi- tivity after plasma treatment is operating through a cyclic transition state formed between the functional groups introduced by plasma treatment and urea. This transition state improved the sensitivity of PANI towards 15 ppm of urea by a factor of 2.4 times PANI. This plasma treated compared to the non-treated PANI is promising for the improvement of the sensitivity and selectivity towards other toxic and carcinogenic amide analytes for gas sensing applications such as improving material proces- sing and controlling food quality.

Serum omentin and vaspin levels in cirrhotic patients with and without portal vein thrombosis

AIM To investigate serum omentin and vaspin levels in cirrhotic patients; and to assess the relationship of these levels with hemostatic parameters, metabolic abnormalities, cirrhosis severity and *** Fifty-one cirrhotic patients(17 with portal vein thrombosis) were analyzed. Serum omentin and vaspin levels were measured with commercially available direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISAs). To assess platelet activity, the following tests were performed using a MULTIPLATE?PLATELET FUNCTION ANALYZER:(1) an ADP-induced platelet activation test;(2) a cyclooxygenase dependent aggregation test(ASPI test);(3) a von Willebrand factor and glycoprotein Ibdependent aggregation(using ristocetin) test(RISTO test); and(4) a test for thrombin receptor-activating peptide-6 induced activation of the thrombin receptor, which is sensitive to Ⅱb/Ⅲa receptor antagonists. RESULTS Omentin, but not vaspin, serum concentrations were significantly decreased in patients with portal vein thrombosis(PVT)(P = 0.01). Prothrombin levels were significantly increased in patients with PVT(P = 0.01). The thrombin receptor activating peptide(TRAP) test results were significantly lower in the PVT group(P = 0.03). No significant differences in adipokines serum levels were found regarding the etiology or severity of liver cirrhosis assessed according to the Child-Pugh or Model of End-Stage Liver Disease(MELD) scores. There was a significant increase in the TRAP(P = 0.03), ASPI(P = 0.001) and RISTO high-test(P = 0.02) results in patients with lower MELD scores. Serum omentin and vaspin levels were significantly down-regulated in patients without insulin resistance(P = 0.03, P = 0.02, respectively). A positive relationship between omentin and vaspin levels were found both when all of the patients were analyzed(r = 0.41, P = 0.01) and among those with PVT(r = 0.94, P < 0.001).CONCLUSION Serum omentin levels are increased in patients without PVT.
