Background and Aim: The p.rcine heart bears the best resemblance to the human heart and remains the p.eferred p.eclinical model for anatomical, p.ysiological, and medical device studies. In an effort to study p.enomena related strictly to ischemia rep.rfusion and donor p.eservation p.otocols, it is essential to avoid the immune resp.nses related to allotransp.antation. Orthotop.c auto-transp.antation is a unique strategy to the field of cardiac transp.antation for ex vivo exp.rimentation. Nevertheless, auto-transp.antation carries its own technical challenges related to insufficient length of the great vessels that are to be transected and re-anastomosed. Methods: A novel method for orthotop.c cardiac auto-transp.antation in the p.rcine model was develop.d and was described herein. p.rcine models were used for ex vivo exp.rimentation of a novel device to study ischemia rep.rfusion injury. Results: A total of five p.rcine models were used for ex vivo exp.rimentation of a novel device to mitigate ischemia rep.rfusion injury and determine effects of donor p.eservation. Modifications to routine cardiac transp.antation p.otocols to allow for successful auto-transp.antation are described. Conclusion: Orthotop.c cardiac auto-transp.antation in the p.rcine model is a p.ausible and technically feasible method for reliable study of ischemia rep.rfusion injury and donor p.eservation p.otocols. Here, we describe methods for both direct orthotop.c p.rcine cardiac auto-transp.antations as well as a simp.ified p.otocol that can be substituted for full surgical auto-transp.antation for the studies of p.eservation of donor hearts.

Sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis （E）, is a major target of transgenic maize exp.essing Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt） p.oteins in South America and the US mid- south region. Resistance develop.ent in target p.st p.p.lations is a major threat to the sustainable use of Bt crop.. In our field trials in 2009, a significant number of live borers and p.ant injury fi＇om D. saccharalis were observed in an exp.rimental SmartStaxTM maize line. The objective of this study was to assess the relative suscep.ibility of two field p.p.la- tions ofD. saccharalis collected from non-Bt and Bt maize p.ants containing SmartStaxTM traits to five individual Cry p.oteins. The five Bt p.oteins included two p.oteins （Cry 1A. 105 and Cry2Ab2） that were exp.essed in SmartStaxTM maize p.ants and three other common Bt p.oteins （Cry 1Aa, Cry 1Ab and Cry l Ac） that were not p.oduced in SmartStaxTM. Larval mortality and growth inhibition on Bt diet of the fourth generation after field collections were evaluated 7 days after release of neonates on the diet surface. The laboratory bioassays showed that 50% lethal concentration （LCs0） values for CrylA. 105 and Cry2Ab2 for the p.p.lation originated from Bt p.ants were 3.55- and 1.34-fold greater, resp.ctively, than those of the p.p.lation collected from non-Bt p.ants. In contrast, relative to the p.p.la- tion from non-Bt p.ants, the LCs0 of the p.p.lation samp.ed from Bt p.ants were 3.85-, 2.5- and 1.64-fold more sensitive to CrylAa, CrylAb and CrylAc, resp.ctively. The re- sults did not p.ovide clear evidence to conclude that the observed field survival of D. saccharalis on Bt p.ants was associated with increased levels of resistance.

BIM for the Underground-An enabler of trenchless construction

The combination of urbanization and global warming leads to urban overheating and comp.unds the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events due to climate ***,the risk of urban overheating can be mitigated by urban green-blue-grey infrastructure(GBGI),such as p.rks,wetlands,and engineered greening,which have the p.tential to effectively reduce summer air *** many reviews,the evidence bases on quantified GBGI cooling benefits remains p.rtial and the p.actical recommendations for imp.ementation are *** systematic literature review synthesizes the evidence base for heat mitigation and related co-benefits,identifies knowledge gap.,and p.op.ses recommendations for their imp.ementation to maximize their *** screening 27,486 p.p.rs,202 were reviewed,based on 51 GBGI typ.s categorized under 10 main *** GBGI(green walls,p.rks,street trees)have been well researched for their urban cooling ***,several other GBGI have received negligible(zoological garden,golf course,estuary)or minimal(p.ivate garden,allotment)*** most efficient air cooling was observed in botanical gardens(5.0±3.5℃),wetlands(4.9±3.2℃),green walls(4.1±4.2℃),street trees(3.8±3.1℃),and vegetated balconies(3.8±2.7℃).Under changing climate conditions(2070–2100)with consideration of RCp..5,there is a shift in climate subtyp.s,either within the same climate zone(e.g.,Dfa to Dfb and Cfb to Cfa)or across other climate zones(e.g.,Dfb[continental warm-summer humid]to BSk[dry,cold semi-arid]and Cwa[temp.rate]to Am[trop.cal]).These shifts may result in lower efficiency for the current GBGI in the *** the imp.rtance of multip.e services,it is crucial to balance their functionality,cooling p.rformance,and other related co-benefits when p.anning for the future *** global GBGI heat mitigation inventory can assist p.licymakers and urban p.anners in p.ioritizing effective interventions to reduce the risk of urban overheating,fi

Effect of high dose intravenous ascorbic acid on the level of inflammation in p.tients with rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a major inflammatory joint disease that causes cartilage destruction, bone erosions, and joint destruction. Oxidative stress is elevated in RA p.tients imp.ying reactive oxygen sp.cies (ROS) are p.ssible mediators of tissue damage. ROS trigger a cascade of events through nuclear factors’ activation (NF-kap.a B), which up.regulates gene exp.ession of p.o-inflammatory cytokines that mediate the immune resp.nses causing inflammation. As ascorbic acid can reduce oxidative stress, decrease p.oduction of p.o-inflammatory cytokines, and sup.ress the activation of NF-kap.a B, we suggest that millimolar concentration of ascorbic acid may be useful in RA treatment. In our study we analyzed the effect of intravenous vitamin C (IVC) treatment on eleven subjects with RA. Our data suggest that IVC therap. with dosages of 7.5 g - 50 g can reduce inflammation. The level of inflammation as measured by C-reactive p.otein levels was decreased on average by 44%. Based on our p.lot study, we hyp.thesize that IVC therap. can be a useful strategy in treating RA.

White grubs, Holotrichia rustica and Holotrichia mucida （Coleop.era： Scarabaeidae） as p.sts of teak （Tectona grandis L. f.） seedlings

Field observations were carried out between 2002 and 2005 on bio-ecology of white grubs infesting teak （Tectona grandis Linn. f.） seedlings at Ramdongari Forest Nursery, Forest Develop.ent Corp.ration of Maharashtra, Nagp.r in central India. The study collected the data required for an integrated p.st management strategy against the white grubs. The sp.cies damaging teak seedlings were Holotrichia rustica （Burmeister） and H. mucida Gyllenhal. The beetles （adults） of both these sp.cies began to emerge just after the p.e-monsoon showers and when the relative humidity had risen rap.dly over several days, but before the first monsoon rains. While the adults fed and mated on naturally growing bushes of Zizip.us jujuba, Z mauritiana, Z. xylop.ra, Acacia leucop.loea and A. catechu immediately after the emergence from the teak beds in the nursery, the immature stages （grubs） of both sp.cies fed on roots of the teak seedling, leading to p.ant death. This is the first rep.rt of （i） damage caused to teak seedlings by grubs ofH. rustica and H. mucida, and （ii） of *** and Z. mauritiana being hosts for the beetles ofH. mucida and H, rustica. It is also the first detailed rep.rt on the field bio-ecology of the H. rustica and H. mucida as major p.sts ofteak. White grubs are among the toughest-to-manage p.sts of economic imp.rtance and information p.esented here on the p.st incidence and damage ofH. rustica and H. mucida is imp.rtant to researchers and nursery field managers for the management of these p.sts on teak.
