The emission and Fourier transformation infrared spectra of freshly prepared porous silicon(pS) and the silicon wafer were examined. Increasing temperature generally led to a decrease in the emission intensities of the pS samples, however, the freshly prepared sample showed an unusually large and sudden increase in its emission intensity at the specific temperature at which the hydrogen ion conductivity in the silicon wafer increased. The O-H vibrations of the silicon wafer also showed a sudden decrease at the same temperature. These results are consistent with the assumption that the luminescence of fresh pS comes from the carrier bound exciton in its confined nanostructure.

Human hematopoiesis was evaluated using the techniques of controlled stem cell differentiation, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis-based proteomics, and functional genomics. We provide the first report that glia maturation factor gamma （GMFG） is a cytokine-responsive protein in erythropoietin-induced and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor-induced hematopoietic lineage development. Results from global functional genomics analysis indicate that GMFG possesses several other features： hematopoietic tissue-specific gene expression, a promoter concentrated with high-score hematopoiesis-specific transcription factors, and possible molecular coevolution with a rudimentary blood/immune system. On the basis of our findings, we hypothesize that GMFG is a hematopoietic-specific protein that may mediate the pluripotentiality and lineage commitment of human hematopoietic stem cells.

We utilized a unique culture system to analyze the expression patterns of gene,protein,and cell surface antigen,and the biological process of the related genes in erythroid and myeloid differentiation and switching of hematopoieticstem cells(HSCs)in response to cytokine ***-specific fragments(266)identified from five populationsof cytokine-stimulated HSCs were categorized into three groups:(1)expressed specifically in a single cell population;(2)expressed in two cell populations,and(3)expressed in three or more populations. Of 145 defined cDNAs,three(2%)were novel *** two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry analyses showed overlappedand distinguished protein expression profiles in the cell populations *** process mapping of mRNAsexpressed in erythroid and myeloid lineages indicated that mRNAs shared by both lineages attended 'core processes,'whereas genes specifically expressed in either lineage alone were related to specific processes or cellular *** this study support the hypothesis that committed HSCs(E14 or G14)cells can still be redirected to develop intomyeloid or erythroid cells when erythropoietin(EpO)is replaced with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor(G-CSF)under erythroid-cultured condition or G-CSF with EpO in myeloid-cultured environment,*** results sug-gest that genes or proteins co-expressed in erythroid and myeloid lineages may be essential for the lineage maintenanceand switching in hematopoiesis.

Background:To measure angle-to-angle(ATA)and spur-to-spur(STS)distances along six meridians using highresolution swept-source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT)and to compare those values with horizontal white-to-white(WTW)***:68 eyes from 68 patients were quantitatively assessed with the Anterion SS-OCT(Heidelberg Engineering,Heidelberg,Germany).ATA and STS distances were measured with the SS-OCT’s B-Scan in six cross-sectional images corresponding to the vertical(6-12 o’clock),1-7 o’clock,2-8 o’clock,horizontal(3-9 o’clock),4-10 o’clock and 5-11 o’clock *** was measured horizontally with the device’s infrared camera.A pearson correlation analysis was carried out to compare ATA and STS distances with ***:The largest values were found for the vertical meridian and the shortest for the 2-8 o’clock meridian,both for ATA and STS *** statistically significant differences were found between WTW,ATA and STS along the horizontal meridian(p>0.1).However,ATA and STS showed statistically significant differences elsewhere,except for the horizontal and the 2-8 o’clock meridians(p>0.05).Moreover,we found that ATA and STS varied significantly depending on the meridian being assessed,except for ATA at 4-10 versus 3-9 o’clock and for STS at 4-10 versus 3-9 o’clock and at 3-9 versus 2-8 o’clock(p>0.1).R^(2) values ranged from 0.49 to 0.75 for ATA and STS at the different meridians,showing the best correlation at 3-9 o’clock meridian(0.64 and 0.75,respectively)and the worst at 6-12 o’clock meridian(R^(2)=0.49 for both ATA and STS).Conclusions:ATA and STS distances vary radially,thus showing that the anterior chamber is vertically ***,it is advisable to measure these two distances along the meridian to be used.

In this letter, we report on, for the first time, the successful femtosecond micro-fabrication of continuous waveguide-like channels in the photorefractive polymer consisting of the nonlinear chromophore 2,5-dimethyl-4-(p-nitrophenylazo)anisole (DMNpAA), the photosensitive compound 2,4,7-trinitro-9-flourenone (TNF), and the plasticiser N-ethylcarbazole (ECZ) all doped in the polymer matrix poly (methyl methacry-late) (pMMA). These channels are caused by the change in refractive index as a result of the localised heating of the polymer and therefore have an important potential for micro-photonic devices in future.

AIM:To establish the hospitalized prevalence of severe Crohn's disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC) in Wales from 1999 to 2007;and to investigate long-term mortality after hospitalization and associations with social deprivation and other socio-demographic ***:Record linkage of administrative inpatient and mortality data for 1467 and 1482 people hospitalised as emergencies for ≥ 3d for CD and UC,*** main outcome measures were hospitalized prevalence,mortality rates and standardized mortality ratios for up to 5 years follow-up after ***:Hospitalized prevalence was 50.1 per 100 000 population for CD and 50.6 for *** hospitalized prevalence of CD was significantly higher(p people aged 16-29 years,but the prevalence of UC was similar in males(51.0) and females(50.1),and increased continuously with *** hospital-ized prevalence of CD was slightly higher in the most deprived areas,but there was no association between social deprivation and hospitalized prevalence of *** was 6.8% and 14.6% after 1 and 5 years follow-up for CD,and 9.2% and 20.8% after 1 and 5 years for *** both CD and UC,there was little discernible association between mortality and social deprivation,distance from hospital,urban/rural residence and ***:CD and UC have distinct demographic *** higher prevalence of hospitalized CD in more deprived areas may reflect higher prevalence and higher hospital dependency.

AIM: To evaluate the influence of baseline maximum standardized uptake value(SUVmax) on survival in a cohort of patients, undergoing positron emission tomography-computed tomography(pET-CT) scan for esophageal carcinoma. METHODS: The pre-treatment SUVmax numeric reading was determined in patients with confirmed esophageal or junctional cancer having pET-CT scan during the time period 1st January 2007 until 31 st July 2012. A minimum follow up of 12 mo was required. patients were subdivided into quartiles according to SUVmax value and the influence of SUVmax on survival was assessed using univariate and multivariate analysis. The following pre-treatment factors were investigated: patient characteristics, tumor characteristics and planned treatment. RESULTS: The study population was 271 patients(191male) with esophageal or junctional carcinoma. The median age was 65 years(range 40-85) and histologic subtype was adenocarcinoma in 197 patients and squamous carcinoma in 74 patients. The treatment intent was radical in 182 and palliative in 89 patients. SUVmax was linked to histologic subtype(p = 0.008), tumor site(p = 0.01) and Union for International Cancer Control(UICC) stage(p prognosis was significantly associated with SUVmax(p = 0.001), T-stage(p p pretreatment SUVmax was not a useful marker in isolation for determining prognosis of patients with esophageal carcinoma.
