Antimicrobial,antibiofilm,angiogenesis,anti-inflammatory,and wound healing activities of zinc nanoparticles green synthesized using ferula macrecolea extract

Antibacterial and anti-parasitic activities of Terfezia claveryi methanolic extract against some common pathogenic agents of infectious diarrhea

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of Gongronema latifolium

Chemical composition of Gongronema latifolium leaves was determined using standard methods. Aqueous and methanol G. latifolium extracts were tested against thirteen pathogenic bacterial isolates. Crude protein, lipid extract, ash, crude fibre and nitrogen flee extractives obtained are： 27.2%, 6.07%, 11.6%, 10.8% and 44.3% dry matter respectively. Potassium, sodium, calcium, phosphorus and cobalt contents are 332, 110, 115, 125 and 116 mg/kg respectively. Dominant essential amino acids are leucine, valine and phenylalanine. Aspartic acid, glutamic acid and glycine are 13.8%, 11,9% and 10.3% respectively of total amino acid. Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are 50.2% and 39.4% of the oil respectively. Palmitic acid makes up 36% of the total fatty acid. Extracts show no activity against E. faecalis, Y. enterolytica, E. aerogenes, B. cereus and E. agglomerans. Methanol extracts were active against S, enteritidis, S. cholerasius ser typhimurium and P. aeruginosa （minimum inhibitory concentration （mic） 1 mg; zone of growth inhibition 7, 6.5 and 7 mm respectively）. Aqueous extracts show activity against E. coli （mic 5 mg） and P. aeruginosa （mic 1 mg） while methanol extracts are active against P. aeruginosa and L. monocytogenes. G. lafifolium has potential food and antibacterial uses.

Natural antibacterial remedy for respiratory tract infections

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of Egyptian honey against bacteria causing respiratory tract ***: Sputum and throat swab specimens were used, from which five bacterial species were isolated, namely, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumonia were isolated,identified and grown on suitable media for further identification or confirmation. Different concentrations(100%, 75% and 25%) of honey and simulated honey solution were used for activity assay and estimation of minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal ***: All the tested bacterial isolates were completely susceptible to the 75%concentrations of honey and to the 100% concentration of the simulated honey solution. This may be due to the high osmotic pressure exerted by the high sugar content in both honey samples. Moderate susceptibility of the isolated bacteria to honey at 100%v/v concentration, and resistance to honey at 25% concentration and the 75% and 25%concentrations of simulated honey solution, indicated the presence of other antimicrobial components responsible for the activity other than the osmotic ***, it was suggested that honey showed distinguished antibacterial activities against the most common bacteria causing respiratory infections with varied ***: Honey, a non-toxic, nutritious, safe for human consumption and cheap natural antibacterial agent, should be globalized.

Antibacterial and antifungal activities of different parts of Tribulus terrestris L. growing in Iraq

Antimicrobial activity of organic and aqueous extracts from fruits, leaves and roots of Tribulus terrestris L., an Iraqi medicinal plant used as urinary anti-infective in folk medicine, was examined against I l species of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms： Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Serratia marcescens, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans using microdilution method in 96 multiwell microtiter plates. All the extracts from the different parts of the plant showed antimicrobial activity against most tested microorganisms. The most active extract against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria was ethanol extract from the fruits with a minimal inhibitory concentration （mic） value of 0.15 mg/ml against B. subtilis, B. cereus, P. vulgaris and C. diphtheriae. In addition, the same extract from the same plant part demonstrated the strongest antifungal activity against C. albicans with an mic value of 0.15 mg/ml.

Correlation between rpoB gene mutation in Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis and clinical rifabutin and rifampicin resistance for treatment of Crohn’s disease

AIM： To investigate overlapping regions of the rpoB gene previously involved with rifamycin resistance in M. tuberculosis and seek correlation between rpoB mutations in dinical MAP strains with susceptibility to RIf and RfB. METHODS： We designed a molecular-based PCR method for the evaluation of rifabutin （RfB） and rifampicin （RIf） resistance based on probable determinant regions within the rpoB gene of MAP, including the 81 bp variable site located between nucleotides 1363 and 1443. The minimum inhibitory concentration （mic） for RIf was also determined against 11 MAP isolates in attempt to seek correlation with rpoB sequences. RESULTS： We determined that MAP strain 18 had an mic of 〉 30 mg/L and ≤ 5 mg/L for RIf and RfB respectively, and a significant and novel rpoB mutation C1367T, compared to an mic of ≤ 1.0 mg/L for both drugs in the wild type MAP. The 30-fold increase in the mic was a direct result of the rpoB mutation C1367T, which caused an amino acid change Thr456 to Ile456 in the drug＇s binding site. In addition, MAP strain 185 contained five silent rpoB mutations and exhibited an mic comparable to the wild-type. Moreover, our in vitro selected mutation in MAP strain UCf5 resulted in the generation of a new resistant strain （UCf5-RIf16r） that possessed T1442C rpoB mutation and an mic 〉 30 mg/L and 〉 10 mg/L for RIf and RfB respectively. Sequencing of the entire rpoB gene in MAP strains UCf4, 18, and UCf5-RIf16r revealed an rpoB mutation A2284C further downstream of the 81 bp variable region in UCf4, accounting for observed slight increase in mic. In addition, no other significant mutations were found in strains 18 and UCf-RIf16r. CONCLUSION： The data clearly illustrates that clinical and in vitro-selected MAP mutants with rpoB mutations result in resistance to RIf and RfB, and that a single amino acid change in the beta subunit may have a significant impact on RIf resistance. SYNTHESIS AND micROSTRUCTURE Of SUPERHARD TiN/SiN_x MULTILAYER THIN fILMS

Multilayer thin films of TiN/SiNx have been deposited onto heated Si 100 substra tes (200℃) by reactive dc-magnetron sputtering from Ti and Si targets in an Ar- N2 gas mixture. The rotation speed of the substrate holder was varied from 1 to 20rpm, while target currents were held constant, to produce bilayer periods vary ing from approximately 22 to 0.6nm. These multilayer films were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AfM), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and microhardness measurements. TEM and SEM studies showed elimination of columnar structure in TiN, owing to the in corporation of amorphous SiNx layers. The crystallinity of TiN and amorphous nat ure of SiNx were confirmed by high resolution TEM. An optimum rotation speed was observed, at which hardness was a maximum. The resulting bilayer period was fou nd to be approximately 1.6nm, which resulted in a significant improvement in mic rohardness (~57GPa). The rms surface roughness for this film was less than 1.5nm .

Response of Soil microbial Community to a High Dose of fresh Olive Mill Wastewater

An incubation experiment was designed in order to determine the further microbiological response to an addition （500 m3 ha-1） of fresh olive mill wastewater （fOMWW） in a soil that has been frequently amended with uncontrolled doses of OMWW since the 1990s in an active disposal site （ADS soil）. To achieve this aim, the phospholipid fatty acid （PLfA） profiles, microbial biomass C （Cmic）, and dehydrogenase （DHA） and urease activities （URA） were monitored at the beginning （To）, 3 h （T1） and 97 d （Tf, i.e., the end） of incubation after fOMWW addition. After the fOMWW addition, an increase in the ratio of fungal to bacterial PLfAs was observed in ADS soil. Moreover, a relative increase of monounsaturated fatty acids （MUfAs） with respect to saturated fatty acids （SATfA） was found in the ADS soil. An increase of the Gram-positive to Gram-negative ratio was observed in this soil at the end of the incubation. While DHA and Cmic increased in the ADS soil after fOMWW addition, URA showed a decrease. fungi and Gram-positive bacterial biomass experienced an increase after addition of a high dose of fOMWW in laboratory conditions.
