We show that by scanning the frequency of a single mode infrared （IR） optical parametric oscillator （IR- OPO） laser to excite the molecular species of interest and fixing the frequency of a vacuum ultraviolet （VUV） laser to photoionize the IR excited species, high-resolution IR spectra of polyatomic neutrals can be obtained with high sensitivity. The fact that this IR-VUV-photoion （IR-VUV-PI） method is based on VUV photoionization probe, and thus, allows the identification of the neutral IR absorber, makes it applicable for IR spectroscopy measurements of isotopemers, radicals, and clusters, which usually exist as impure samples. The highly resolved IR-VUV-PI measurements achieved using the single mode IR-OPO laser have made possible the selection of single rovibrational states of CH3X （X=Br and I）, C2H4, and C3H4 for VUV-pulsed field ionization-photoelectron （VUV-PFI-PE） measurements, resulting in rovibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra for these polyatomic molecules. These experiments show that the signal- to-noise ratios of the IR-VUV-PI and IR-VUV-PFI-PE spectra obtained by employing the high-resolution IR-OPO laser are significantly higher than those observed in previous IR-VUV-PI and IR-VUV-PFI-PE studies using a low-resolution IR-OPO laser. Further improvement in sensitivity of IR-VUV-PI and IR- VUV-PFI-PE measurements by using the collinear arrangement of IR-VUV lasers and molecular beam is discussed.

Ulcerative colitis(UC) is an inflammation-associated disease of the colon and *** onset and progress of the disease are directly influenced by the nature of the intestinal microflora,the intestinal barrier function,and the immunological responses of the *** epithelial invasion of pathogenic bacteria due to excess contact and/or barrier dysfunction is related to inflammation mediated by intestinal immune *** the etiology of UC is not clearly understood,recent studies have shown a rising incidence of UC worldwide,and this phenomenon is more prominent in Asian countries and in Asian immigrants in Western *** increased prevalence of UC also contributes to an increased risk of developing colorectal *** factors,including changes in dietary habits,have been suggested as major risk factors of UC.A systematic review showed a negative association between UC risk and vegetable intake,whereas total fat,omega-6 fatty acids and meat intake were positively associated with an increased risk of *** dietary factors and energy balance have been suggested as having important roles in inducing changes in the microbial population and intestinal barrier integrity and in regulating inflammatory immune responses,directly or *** energy intake is now known to increase pathogenic microbial ***,the application of appropriate probiotics may reverse the pathogenic progression of the *** the meantime,dietary anti-inflammatory compounds,including omega-3 fatty acids and other phytochemicals,may directly suppress inflammatory responses in the course of UC *** this review,the increased prevalence of UC and its management are interpreted from the standpoint of nutritional modulation to regulate the intestinal microflora population,intestinal epithelium permeability,and inflammatory responses.

Objective:To explore the anti-diabetic activity of Ecklonia cava(EC) in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic ***:Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ(90 mg/kg).Normal and diabetic mice were treated with 0%,3%,and 5%EC diet for 4 weeks. Serum glucose and insulin concentrations,serum lipid profile,oral glucose tolerance test,and liver and pancreaticβ-cell histopathological observations were *** addition,in vitro glucose-induced insulin secretion was determined using pancreaticβ-islet ***:EC supplementation significantly and dose-dependently decreased serum glucose concentration, and improved glucose homeostasis in diabetic mice by preventing loss ofβ-cell mass resulting in increase of insulin *** triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations in the serum and liver were markedly reduced by EC treatment in STZ-diabetic ***,LDL-,and HDL-cholesterol levels were ameliorated in EC supplemented diabetic *** steatosis induced by STZ was ameliorated by EC ***,in vitro insulinotrophic effect of EC extract was observed in pancreaticβ-***:This study demonstrated that EC is a potent and efficacious hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic agent,and prevents the loss ofβ-cell mass resulting in increase of insulin secretary capacity.

Free-form optoelectronic devices can provide hyper-connectivity over space and ***,most conformable optoelectronic devices can only be fabricated on flat polymeric materials using low-temperature processes,limiting their application and *** paper presents free-form optoelectronic devices that are not dependent on the shape or *** medical applications,the transferable OLED(10μm)is formed in a sandwich structure with an ultra-thin transferable barrier(4.8μm).The results showed that the fabricated sandwich-structure transferable OLED(STOLED)exhibit the same high-efficiency performance on cylindricalshaped materials and on materials such as textile and *** the neutral axis is freely adjustable using the sandwich structure,the textile-based OLED achieved both folding reliability and washing reliability,as well as a long operating life(>150 h).When keratinocytes were irradiated with red STOLED light,cell proliferation and cell migration increased by 26 and 32%,*** the skin equivalent model,the epidermis thickness was increased by 39%;additionally,in organ culture,not only was the skin area increased by 14%,but also,reepithelialization was highly *** on the results,the STOLED is expected to be applicable in various wearable and disposable photomedical devices.

Bismuthinite （Bi2S3）nanostructures were prepared by a hydrothermal method with sodium ethylenediamine- tetraacetate （EDTA-Na2）. The morphology of Bi2S3 nanostructures was changed from a nanorod to a nanoplate by presence of the EDTA-Na2. The altered morphology was caused by the capping effect of EDTA-Na2 with Bi3＋ ions, which induces the suboptimal growth direction due to partially blocking the preferential orientation direction. When the EDTA-Na2/Bi3＋ molar ratio= 1, the growth of Bi2S3 nanostructures was not allowed due to the chelating effect of EDTA-Na2. The obtained Bi2S3 nanorods, stacked nanorods, nanoplates and nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction （XRD）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, high-resolution transmission electron mi- croscopy （HRTEM） and selected area electron diffraction （SAED） pattern. A possible formation mechanism of these morphologies was proposed. The successful synthesis of various morphologies of nanostructured Bi2S3 may open up new possibilities for thermoelectric, electronic and optoelectronic uses of nanodevices based on Bi2S3 nanostructure.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety of hair essence containing 0.05%purified bee venom(HE-PBV)on the skin and eyes of New Zealand White ***:HE-PBV which contained 0.05%PBV,purified water,and glycerin,was used as the test *** skin-irritation test(SIT)and eye-irritation test(EIT)were conducted according to the Draize *** the SIT,HE-PBV(0.5 m L)dropped gauze was attached both intact and abraded skin for 24 *** other side of the skin was used as *** 24 and 72 h,the treatment site was observed and scored according to evaluation criteria for skin *** the EIT,the rabbits were divided into two groups:eye-washed(three rabbits)and non-eye-washed(six rabbits).HE-PBV(0.1 m L)was squirted into the right eye of *** left eye was untreated and used as a ***,20-30-s later,the eyes of rabbits in the eye-washed group were washed with^50 m L of physiologic(0.9%)salt ***,1,2,3,4 and 7 d after the start of the EIT,the eyes and behavior of the rabbits were *** degree of eye irritation elicited by HE-PBV was determined in three steps and then the criteria of the classification of eye-irritation ***:The SIT revealed erythema and edema at the site of HE-PBV *** 72 h,the body weight of rabbits was reduced slightly,but other symptoms(except erythema and edema)were not *** Primary Irritation Index score was0.6,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a slight *** EIT did not show mortality or body-weight fluctuation,but hyperemic conjunctiva and eyelid closure were noted after HE-PBV *** for these results,the score for the ophthalmic response on days 1,2,3,4 and 7 was 0,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a ***:These data suggest that HE-PBV did not elicit eye irritation,but was a slight irritant to the skin of rabbits;the latter slight would have been due to the excipients used in manufacture of the hair essence because PBV has been shown to be safe.

In situ measurement of atmospheric carbon dioxide at Yanbian,China:Estimating its northeast Asian emission regions

High-precision(±0.1 ppm) and high-frequency(hourly averaged) in situ measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO2) were made for the first time from August 2005 to July 2007 at Yanbian,China using a non-dispersive Infrared(NDIR) analyzer with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Earth System Research Laboratory(NOAA/ESRL) *** results of these measurements are presented in this paper and are used to investigate the regional representativeness of regional background data at Yanbian and determine the CO2 emission source regions in Northeast *** phase of the monthly variations at Yanbian reflects the special regional characteristics,which were overall in excellent agreement with other observatories in the middle-to-high latitudes in the Northern *** a hybrid receptor model to the regional emission source events in cold period(November-April),we estimated the distribution of the major CO2 emissions in the northeast *** results indicated that the strongest potential emission areas contributing to Yanbian are the Beijing & Tianjin metropolitan areas,southwestern part of Shandong Province including Jinan,and *** results of this study reveal the usefulness of in situ CO2 measurements at Yanbian in establishing the scientific foundation for monitoring the large CO2 emission areas in northern China and *** monitoring of CO2 at Yanbian within a regional network should provide significant contributions to both understanding the global/regional carbon cycle and constraining "top-down" emissions in Northeast Asia.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor(miF)is a chemokine that plays an essential role in immune system *** studies suggested that miF protects neurons in ischemic ***,few studies are reported on the role of miF in neurological recovery after ischemic *** purpose of this study is to identify the molecular mechanism of neuroprotection mediated by *** neuroblastoma cells were incubated in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium under oxygen-glucose deprivation(OGD)for 4 hours and then returned to normal aerobic environment for reperfusion(OGD/R).30 ng/mL miF recombinant(30 ng/mL)or ISO-1(miF antagonist;50μM)was administered to human neuroblastoma *** cell cultures were assigned to one of four groups:control,OGD/R,OGD/R with miF,OGD/R with *** viability was analyzed using WST-1 *** levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),microtubule-associated protein 2(MAP2),Caspase-3,Bcl2,and Bax were detected by western blot assay and immunocytochemistry in each group to measure apoptotic ***-1 assay results revealed that compared to the OGD/R group,cell survival rate was significantly higher in the OGD/R with miF group and lower in the OGD/R with ISO-1 *** blot assay and immunocytochemistry results revealed that expression levels of BDNF,Bcl2,and MAP2 were significantly higher,and expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly lower in the miF group than in the OGD/R *** levels of BDNF,Bcl2,and MAP2 were significantly lower,and expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly higher in the ISO-1 group than in the OGD/R *** administration promoted neuronal cell survival and induced high expression levels of BDNF,MAP2,and Bcl2(anti-apoptosis)and low expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax(pro-apoptosis)in an OGD/R *** results suggest that miF administration is effective for inducing expression of BDNF and leads to neuroprotection of neuronal cells

BACKGROUND Pyogenic infectious spondylitis(PIS)is a rare condition,with an incidence between 0.2 and 2 cases per 100000 per ***’s most common symptom-back or neck pain-occurs in more than 90%of ***,we reported a case of thoracic PIS accompanied by pneumothorax in a 65-year-old male *** SUMMARY A 65-year-old man presented with right chest pain and *** initial erect posteroanterior chest radiography revealed pneumothorax,which was further evaluated by chest computed tomography,revealing pleural effusion in the right lung and a paravertebral abscess with bony destruction of vertebral *** on magnetic resonance imaging,the patient was diagnosed with thoracic infectious spondylitis with an anterior paravertebral *** was prescribed antibiotics and underwent neurosurgery due to aggravated symptoms and neurologic *** examination revealed that the cause of pleural effusion and pneumothorax was Staphylococcus aureus infection contiguously spread to lung *** several surgical treatments with intravenous antibiotic therapy for two months and transition to oral antibiotics(rifampin 600 mg qd and ciprofloxacin 500 mg bid),the patient received physical therapy to recover *** month after discharge,the patient had no chest pain or dyspnea,and exhibited no elevation in inflammatory markers or new thoracic *** To our knowledge,this is the very first report of a case of thoracic PIS with pneumothorax.

The purpose of this study is to characterize a meta-signature of differentially expressed mRNA in chronic kidney disease （CKD） to predict putative microRNA （miRNA） in CKD-mineral bone disorder （CKD- MBD） and confirm the changes in these genes and miRNA expression under uremic conditions by using a cell culture system. PubMed searches using MeSH terms and keywords related to CKD, uremia, and mRNA arrays were conducted. Through a computational analysis, a meta-signature that characterizes the significant intersection of differentially expressed mRNA and expected miRNAs associated with CKD-MBD was determined. Additionally, changes in gene and miRNA expressions under uremic conditions were confirmed with human Saos-2 osteoblast-like cells. A statistically significant mRNA meta-signature of upregulated and downregulated mRNA levels was identified. Furthermore, miRNA expression profiles were inferred, and computational anaIyses were performed with the imputed mieroRNA regulation based on weighted ranked expression and putative microRNA targets （IMRE） method to identify miRNAs associated with CKD occurrence. TLR4 and miR-146b levels were significantly associated with CKD-MBD. TLR4 levels were significantly downregulated, whereas pri- miR-146b and miR-146b were upregulated in the presence of uremic toxins in human Saos-2 osteoblast-like cells. Differentially expressed miRNAs associated with CKD-MBD were identified through a computational analysis, and changes in gene and miRNA expressions were confirmed with an in vitro cell culture system.
