Effect of early preoperative 5-fluorouracil on the integrity of colonic anastomoses in rats

AIM： To determine the effect of chemotherapy on wound healing by giving early preoperative 5-fluorouracil （5-FU） to rats with colonic ***： Sixty Albino-Wistar male rats （median weight, 235 g） were used in this study. The rots were fed with standard laboratory food and given tap water ad libitum. The animals were divided into three groups： Group 1： Control group （chemotherapy was not administered）, Group 2： Intraperitoneally （IP） administered 5-FU group （chemotherapy was administered IP to animals at a dose of 20 mg/kg daily during the 5 d preceeding surgery）, Group 3： Intravenously （IV） administered 5-FU group. Chemotherapy was administered v/a the penil vein, using the same dosing scheme and duration as the second group. After a 3-d rest to minimize the side effects of chemotherapy, both groups underwent surgery. One centimeter of colon was resected 2 cm proximally from the peritoneal reflection, then sutured intermittently and subsequently end-to-end anastomosed. In each group, half the animals were given anaesthesia on the 3rd postoperative （PO） day and the other half on the 7th PO day, for in vivo analytic procedures. The abdominal incisions in the rats were dissected, all the new and old anastomotic segments were clearly seen and bursting pressures of each anastomotic segment, tissue hydroxyproline levels and DNA content were determined to assess the histologic tissue repair process. RESULTS： When the IV group was compared with the IP group, bursting pressures of the anastomotic segments on the 3rd and 7th PO days, were found to be significantly decreased, hydroxyproline levels at the anastomotic segment on the 7th PO day were significantly decreased （P 〈 0.01）. CONCLUSION： In this study, we conclude that early preoperative 5-FU, administered IV, negatively affects wound healing. However, IP administered 5-FU does not negatively affect wound healing.

The kidneys play a critical role in maintaining glucose *** normal renal tubular function,most of the glucose filtered from the glomeruli is re-absorbed in the proximal tubules,leaving only trace amounts in the *** can occur as a symptom of generalized proximal tubular dysfunction or when the reabsorption threshold is exceeded or the glucose threshold is reduced,as seen in familial renal glycosuria(FRG).FRG is characterized by persistent glycosuria despite normal blood glucose levels and tubular function and is primarily associated with mutations in the sodium/glucose cotransporter 5A2 gene,which encodes the sodium-glucose cotransporter(SGLT)*** SGLTs has been proposed as a novel treatment strategy for diabetes,and since FRG is often considered an asymptomatic and benign condition,it has inspired preclinical and clinical studies using SGLT2 inhibitors in type 2 ***,patients with FRG may exhibit clinical features such as lower body weight or height,altered systemic blood pressure,diaper dermatitis,amino-aciduria,decreased serum uric acid levels,and *** research is needed to fully understand the pathophysiology,molecular genetics,and clinical manifestations of renal glucosuria.

The ancient wails of Diyarbakir are the city＇s most important urban etement, exhibiting an artistic grace through the arrangement of the towers, architectural values, dimensions, materiats, and decorations. Diyarbakir is located at the crossroads of important trade routes, one connecting the Western World to the Far East and the other connecting North to South. Architecturally, its defensive waits and towers make it one of the most important surviving casttes. In this study, the history, location, architectural and building properties of fortifications of Diyarbakir were explained and technical dimensioning typology studies on towers and city watts were submitted.

Bioactivity of non-extractable phenolics from lemon peel obtained by enzyme and ultrasound assisted extractions

Lemon peel waste constitutes a natural resource for bioactive phenolics with antioxidant,antihypertensive and antidiabetic *** of non-extractable phenolics from lemon peel obtained by conventional heat-,enzyme-,ultrasound-,and ultrasound-enzyme-assisted extractions were evaluated in comparison with those of extractable *** antioxidant,angiotensin-I-converting enzyme(ACE),andα-amylase inhibitory activities and phenolic profile of the phenolic fractions were *** the extractable fraction had higher total phenolic content,ascorbic acid content,and antioxidant activity,phenolic profile analysis indicated that the non-extractable fraction contained higher concentrations of phenolics especially hesperidin and *** concentrations of hesperidin and hesperetin in the non-extractable fraction were 270.9 mg/100 g dry weight and 415.9 mg/100 g dry weight,respectively,which were about two-fold higher than those present in the extractable ***,ACE andα-amylase inhibitory activities of non-extractable fraction were stronger than those of the extractable *** phenolic content,total flavonoid content,and antioxidant activity were increased by enzyme and ultrasound treatments compared to those by conventional heat ***,ACE inhibitory activities of all non-extractable fractions were similar whileα-amylase inhibitory activity was higher in ultrasound-and ultrasound-enzyme-treated *** ultrasound-assisted extraction slightly improved the yield of non-extractable phenolics,enzyme-assisted extraction yielded two-to four-fold increases in the amounts of phenolic compounds compared to heat-assisted ***-extractable phenolic fraction from lemon peel was found to have a significant potential as an antihypertensive and antidiabetic agent.

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF FIBER UTILIZATION ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETE CONTAINING SILICA FUME

The use of recycled aggregate(RA)instead of natural aggregate(NA)in concrete is necessary for environmental protection and the effective utilization of *** addition of recycled aggregates in concrete increases shrinkage,porosity and decreases the mechanical properties compared to that of normal *** study was aimed at investigating how the addition of various proportions of polypropylene and steel fiber affect the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC).The natural coarse aggregates(NCAs)used in the production of normal concrete(NC)were replaced in 30%and 50%proportions by recycled coarse aggregates(RCAs)obtained from the demolished *** this case,a polypropylene fiber(PF)content of 0.1%and steel fiber(SF)1%and 2%volume fractions were used,along with hybrid fibers-a combination of the *** the material performance of RAC compared to NC is analyzed by reviewing existing published literature,it is not evident what the use of RCAs and hybrid fibers have on the mechanical properties of *** results showed that the compressive strength,flexural strength and impcat resistance of RAC were reduced as the percentage of RCAs *** was observed that the compressive strength was increased with the addition of 1%steel fiber in the *** flexural and impact performance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete(Specimens NC and RAC)was increased as the volume fractions of steel fiber *** hybrid fiber reinforced concretes showed the best results in their mechanical performance of all the concrete groups.

Bacteriocin characterization of autochtonous Lactococcus lactis L54 and its application as starter culture for Beyaz cheese

White brined cheese is one of the most produced and consumed cheese varieties in Mediterranean *** cheese is a type of white brined cheese and is usually produced from pasteurized cow’s *** produced from raw milk or contaminated after production with foodborne pathogens may have a safety *** cheese provides a favorable environment for growth of Listeria monocytogenes,a psychrotrophic *** of this study was to evaluate use of nisin producing autochtonous Lactococcus lactis L54 to control *** ATCC 7644 in Beyaz cheese during storage for 90 *** of bacteriocin demonstrated that nisin L54 has a broad inhibition spectrum on both pathogens including *** ATCC 7644,Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300,Bacillus cereus ATCC 33019 and several other lactic acid bacteria *** safety assessment revealed that *** L54 did not contain tested virulence genes and showed no hemolytic and DNAse *** of *** L54 to Beyaz cheese significantly decreased the *** counts compared to the control and did not show any negative effect on the physicochemical and sensory *** L54 strain was concluded as potential bioprotective,starter or co-starter culture for Beyaz cheese production.

Can 5-aminosalicylic acid suppository decrease the pain after rectal band ligation?

AIM: To investigate the effect of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) suppositories on rectal band ligation-induced pain. METHODS: Sixty patients were randomized into two treatment groups. RESULTS: Our results showed that there was no difference between 5-ASA suppository group and the control group for pain control. CONCLUSION: 5-ASA may be an alternative treatment for hemorrhoids; however, it does not affect the rectal band ligation-induced pain.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the anterior cingulate gyrus and caudate nucleus in schizophrenia patients versus healthy controls

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy （^1 H-MRS） permits the assessment of cerebral neurometabolites, such as N-acetylaspartate, choline, and creatine, in vivo and has been used to study schizophrenia. The present study used ^1H-MRS to compare the spectroscopy change of N-acetylaspartate, creatine, and choline metabolite levels in the anterior cingulate and caudate nucleus of both schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, as well as between the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the schizophrenia patients. Results showed that N-acetylaspartate and creatine metabolite levels in the left anterior cingulate gyrus were significantly lower in the schizophrenia patients than in the healthy controls, indicating hypometabolism. In addition, choline concentration in the left caudate nucleus of schizophrenia patients was significantly lower than in the right caudate nucleus, indicating that it is necessary to study the cerebral lateralization of ^1H-MRS in schizophrenia patients.

Adsorption and desorption behavior of silver ions onto valonia tannin resin

Valonia tannin （VT） was gelated through polymerization with formaldehyde to prepare an adsorbent, which was found effective to remove Ag＋ from aqueous solution. The adsorption-desorption behaviors of valonia tannin resin （VTR） were investigated under various initial Ag＋ concentrations, solution temperatures, pH values etc. The applicability of empirical kinetic models was also studied. The pseudo-second-order model studies revealed the Ag＋ sorption was very rapid. VT and VTR were characterized using FTIR and SEM before and after adsorption. The Ag＋ biosorption on VTR increased with a rise in initial concentration of Ag＋ and with a decrease in temperature. Desorption experiments were conducted at low pH values and the solutions of H2SO4, HNO3 and HCl were used for desorption. The VTR shows high adsorption capacity to Ag＋ in a wide pH range of 2.0-7.0, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 97.08 mg/g was obtained at pH 5.0 and 296 K when the initial concentration of Ag＋ was 100.0 mg/L. Ag＋ ion desorption could reach 99.6% using 1 mol/L HCl＋1% thiourea （NH2CSNH2） solution. By utilizing such characteristics of VTR, it is expected that it can be applied to recovering Ag＋ efficiently and simply with low cost.
