Variations of sediment organic phosphorus and organic carbon during the outbreak and decline of algal blooms in Lake Taihu,China

In this study,sediment organic phosphorus(OP)and organic carbon(OC)in Lake Taihu,China,as well as their relationships,were analyzed during the outbreak and decline of algal blooms(ABs)over a five-month field study.The results showed synchronous temporal changes in the sediment OP and OC contents with the development of ABs.In addition,there was a significant positive correlation between the sediment OP and OC(p<0.01),suggesting simultaneous deposition and consumption during the ABs outbreak.The sediment OP and OC contents decreased significantly at the early and last stages of the ABs outbreak and increased at the peak of the ABs outbreak and during the ABs decline.These temporal variation patterns suggest that the sediment OC and OP contents did not consistently increase during the ABs outbreak,even though algae are an important source of organic matter in sediments.The depletion or enrichment of OC and OP in sediments may also depend on the scale of the ABs outbreak.The obtained results revealed significant differences in the sediment OC and OP contents between the months(p<0.05).In addition,OP in the sediments was dominated by orthophosphate diester(phospholipids and DNA-P)and orthophosphate monoester during the ABs outbreak and decline,respectively.The active OC contents and proportions in the sediments in the ABs outbreak were significantly lower than those observed in the ABs decline period,demonstrating the significant impacts of the ABs outbreak and decline on the sediment OC and OP in Lake Taihu.

Optimizing piezoelectric performance of complex perovskite through increasing diversity of B-site cations

Piezoelectric materials with unique properties are hugely appealing for high sensitivity sensors and ultrasonic transducers.Here,Pb(Ni_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))O_(3)-Pb(Yb_(1/2)Nb_(1/2))O_(3)-PbTiO_(3)piezoelectric system was designed and investigated in detail.The optimized piezoelectric response(d_(33)=826 pC/N,d_(33)∗=1017 pm/V)together with good temperature stability and negligible performance degradation up to 10^(6) cycles was achieved in 0.58PNN-0.10PYN-0.32PT composition.Rayleigh analysis revealed the amplification of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions in MPB region due to more spontaneous polarization orientations and an increase in chemical disorder of system after the introduction of PYN.The origin of high piezoelectric response was investigated through the combination of scanning electron microscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy.The diversity of B-site cations was shown to enhance local structural heterogeneity,weaken long-range ferroelectric ordered domains,and lower free energy barrier via the formation of nanodomain configuration that promoted polarization rotation,thereby improving piezoelectric properties of the material.Therefore,it is suggested that increasing the diversity of B-site cations is an effective strategy for achieving outstanding piezoelectric performance.

Analysis of China’s PM_(2.5)and ozone coordinated control strategy based on the observation data from 2015 to 2020

The coordinated control of PM_(2.5)and ozone has become the strategic goal of national air pollution control.Considering the gradual decline in PM_(2.5)concentration and the aggravation of ozone pollution,a better understanding of the coordinated control of PM_(2.5)and ozone is urgently needed.Here,we collected and sorted air pollutant data for 337 cities from 2015 to 2020 to explore the characteristics of PM_(2.5)and ozone pollution based on China’s five major air pollution regions.The results show that it is necessary to continue to strengthen the emission reduction in PM_(2.5)and ozone precursors,and control NO_(x) and VOCs while promoting a dramatic emission reduction in PM_(2.5).The primary method of curbing ozone pollution is to strengthen the emission control of VOCs,with a long-term strategy of achieving substantial emission reductions in NO_(x),because VOCs and NO_(x) are also precursors to PM_(2.5);hence,their reductions also contribute to the reduction in PM_(2.5).Therefore,the implementation of a multipollutant emission reduction control strategy aimed at the prevention and control of PM_(2.5)and ozone pollution is the only means to realize the coordinated control of PM_(2.5)and ozone.

Synthesis and anti-HIV activities of phorbol derivatives

In this study,37 derivatives of phorbol esters were synthesized and their anti-HIV-1 activities evaluated,building upon our previous synthesis of 51 phorbol derivatives.12-Para-electron-acceptor-trans-cinnamoyl-13-decanoyl phorbol derivatives stood out,demonstrating remarkable anti-HIV-1 activities and inhibitory effects on syncytia formation.These derivatives exhibited a higher safety index compared with the positive control drug.Among them,12-(trans-4-fluorocinnamoyl)-13-decanoyl phorbol,designated as compound 3c,exhibited the most potent anti-HIV-1 activity(EC_(50)2.9 nmol·L^(−1),CC50/EC_(50)11117.24)and significantly inhibited the formation of syncytium(EC_(50)7.0 nmol·L^(−1),CC50/EC_(50)4891.43).Moreover,compound 3c is hypothesized to act both as an HIV-1 entry inhibitor and as an HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor.Isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular docking studies indicated that compound 3c may also function as a natural activator of protein kinase C(PKC).Therefore,compound 3c emerges as a potential candidate for developing new anti-HIV drugs.

Cancer statistics for young adults aged 20 to 49 years in China from 2000 to 2017:a population-based registry study

An increasing cancer incidence among adults younger than 50 years has been reported for several types of cancer in multiple countries.We aimed to report cancer profiles and trends among young adults in China.Data from the China Cancer Registry Annual Report were used to estimate incidence and mortality among young adults(ages 20–49 years)in China in 2017,and an age-period-cohort model was employed to estimate the average annual percent change(AAPC)in incidence and mortality from 2000 to 2017.All 25 cancer types were grouped into obesity-or overweight-associated cancers(12 cancer types)and additional cancers(13 cancer types).In 2017,there were 681,178new cases and 214,591 cancer deaths among young adults in China.Among young adults,the most common cancers were thyroid,breast,cervical,liver,lung,and colorectal cancer,and the leading causes of cancer deaths were liver,lung,cervical,stomach,breast,and colorectal cancer.From 2000 to 2017,the cancer incidence increased for all cancers combined among young adults,with the highest AAPC(1.46%)for adults aged 20–24 years,while cancer mortality decreased,with the highest AAPC(-1.63%)for those aged 35–39 years.In conclusion,the cancer incidence in China has increased among young adults,while cancer mortality has decreased for nearly all ages.Cancer control measures,such as obesity control and appropriate screening,may contribute to reducing the increasing cancer burden among young adults.

Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) has been widely applied to investigate intricate biological dynamics due to its outstanding super-resolution imaging speed. Incorporating compressive sensing into SIM brings the possibility to further improve the super-resolution imaging speed. Nevertheless, the recovery of the superresolution information from the compressed measurement remains challenging in experiments. Here, we report structured illumination microscopy with complementary encoding-based compressive imaging (CECI-SIM) to realize faster super-resolution imaging. Compared to the nine measurements to obtain a super-resolution image in a conventional SIM, CECI-SIM can achieve a super-resolution image by three measurements;therefore, a threefold improvement in the imaging speed can be achieved. This faster imaging ability in CECI-SIM is experimentally verified by observing tubulin and actin in mouse embryonic fibroblast cells. This work provides a feasible solution for high-speed super-resolution imaging, which would bring significant applications in biomedical research.

Seco-cyclic phorbol derivatives and their anti-HIV-1 activities

Phorbol esters are recognized for their dual role as anti-HIV-1 agents and as activators of protein kinase C(PKC).The efficacy of phorbol esters in binding with PKC is attributed to the presence of oxygen groups at positions C20,C3/C4,and C9 of phorbol.Concurrently,the lipids located at positions C12/C13 are essential for both the anti-HIV-1 activity and the formation of the PKC-ligand complex.The influence of the cyclopropane ring at positions C13 and C14 in phorbol derivatives on their anti-HIV-1 activity requires further exploration.This research entailed the hydrolysis of phorbol,producing seco-cyclic phorbol derivatives.The anti-HIV-1 efficacy of these derivatives was assessed,and the affinity constant(Kd)for PKC-δprotein of selected seco-cyclic phorbol derivatives was determined through isothermal titration calorimetry.The findings suggest that the chemical modification of cyclopropanols could affect both the anti-HIV-1 activity and the PKC binding affinity.Remarkably,compound S11,with an EC_(50) of 0.27μmol·L^(−1) and a CC_(50) of 153.92μmol·L^(−1),demonstrated a potent inhibitory effect on the intermediate products of HIV-1 reverse transcription(ssDNA and 2LTR),likely acting at the viral entry stage,yet showed no affinity for the PKC-δprotein.These results position compound S11 as a potential candidate for further preclinical investigation and for studies aimed at elucidating the pharmacological mechanism underlying its anti-HIV-1 activity.

Anti-Seizure and Neuronal Protective Effects of Irisin in Kainic Acid-Induced Chronic Epilepsy Model with Spontaneous Seizures

An increased level of reactive oxygen species is a key factor in neuronal apoptosis and epileptic seizures.Irisin reportedly attenuates the apoptosis and injury induced by oxidative stress.Therefore,we evaluated the effects of exogenous irisin in a kainic acid(KA)-induced chronic spontaneous epilepsy rat model.The results indicated that exogenous irisin significantly attenuated the KA-induced neuronal injury,learning and memory defects,and seizures.Irisin treatment also increased the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)and uncoupling protein 2(UCP2),which were initially reduced following KA administration.Furthermore,the specific inhibitor of UCP2(genipin)was administered to evaluate the possible protective mechanism of irisin.The reduced apoptosis,neurodegeneration,and spontaneous seizures in rats treated with irisin were significantly reversed by genipin administration.Our findings indicated that neuronal injury in KA-induced chronic epilepsy might be related to reduced levels of BDNF and UCP2.Moreover,our results confirmed the inhibition of neuronal injury and epileptic seizures by exogenous irisin.The protective effects of irisin may be mediated through the BDNF-mediated UCP2 level.Our results thus highlight irisin as a valuable therapeutic strategy against neuronal injury and epileptic seizures.
