RESIDENTIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSmENT mODELING: COmPARATIVE CASE STUDY OF INSULATING CONCRETE FORmS AND TRADITIONAL BUILDING mATERIALS

Innovative,sustainable construction products are emerging in response to market *** potential product,insulating concrete forms(ICFs),offers possible advantages in energy and environmental performance when compared with traditional construction *** though ICFs are in part derived from a petroleum-based product,the benefits in the use phase outweigh the impacts of the raw material extraction and manufacturing *** paper quantitatively measures ICFs’performance through a comparative life cycle assessment of wall sections comprised of ICF and traditional *** life cycle stages included raw materials extraction and manufacturing,construction,use and end of life for a 2,450 square foot house in Pittsburgh,*** showed that even though building products such as ICFs are energy intensive to produce and thus have higher environmental impacts in the raw materials extraction and manufacturing phase,the use phase dominated in the life *** the use phase,the home constructed of ICFs consumed 20 percent less energy when compared to a traditional wood-frame *** results of the impact assessment show that ICFs have higher impacts over wood homes in most impact *** high impacts arise from the raw materials extraction and manufacturing phase of *** there are a number of embedded unit processes such as disposal of solid waste and transport of natural gas that contribute to this high impact and identifying the top unit process and substance contributors to the impact category is not *** different unit processes or impact assessment methods will yield dissimilar results and the tradeoffs associated with every building product should be considered after studying the entire life cycle in detail.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS TO LImIT CONSTRUCTABILITY ISSUES ON A NET-ZERO ENERGY HOmE

The objective of this study was to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) to limit constructability issues on a net-zero energy home, in an effort to enhance sustainability and increase competitiveness in the residential construction industry. An extensive literature review was conducted to determine common constructability issues and to compile success factors identified previously by other researchers for traditional home construction. The CSFs were then narrowed to a group of thirteen CSFs unique to net-zero energy home construction. This framework of net-zero energy CSFs was supported by a case study of a net-zero energy home under construction in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Through the use of observational research on this home, the importance of each CSF was defined, and their contributions to a net-zero energy home was discussed based on evidence from the case study. CSFs and constructability issues identified in this research will assist the residential construction sector’s continued effort to reduce energy use, enhance conservation, and promote sustainability through the support of net-zero energy residential construction. CSFs will promote sustainability by increasing the ease and efficiency of the design and construction of net zero energy homes which will in return make the homes more cost efficient to build and an affordable option for home buyers.

Late/middle/Early/Ichnocambrian： a communication-friendly nomenclature for the epochs of a quadripartite Cambrian Period

The International Subcommission on Cambrian Stratigraphy has voted to abandon the traditional tripartite subdivision of the Cambrian Period in favor of a quadripartite structure. Each of the four newly defined epochs will be assigned a name based on the location of the GSSP that defines the base of its basal stage. We do not question the biostratigraphic appropriateness of subdividing the Cambrian Period into four epochs rather than three, however we argue that it is unnecessary and unwise to completely abandon the widely used, easily remembered, relative-position-specific names Early, middle, and Late Cambrian. We propose a simple epoch nomenclature, which retains the familiar names for the intervals of strata to which they have traditionally been applied, and adds just a single, new, easily-remembered name - Ichnocambrian -for the ichnofossil-defined, pre-trilobite-bearing portion of the Cambrian.

A Critical Review of Social Resilience Properties and Pathways in Disaster management

Resilience as a concept is multi-faceted with complex *** a disaster context,there is lack of consistency in conceptualizing social *** results in ambiguity of its definition,properties,and pathways for assessment.A number of key research gaps exist for critically reviewing social resilience conceptualization,projecting resilience properties in a disaster-development continuum,and delineating a resilience trajectory in a multiple disaster *** review addressed these research gaps by critically reviewing social resilience definitions,properties,and *** review found four variations in social resilience definitions,which recognize the importance of abilities of social systems and processes in disaster phases at different levels.A review of resilience properties and pathways in the disaster resilience literature suggested new resilience properties—“risk-sensitivity”and“regenerative”in the timeline of two consecutive *** review highlights a causal pathway for social resilience to better understand the resilience status in a multi-shock scenario by depicting inherent and adaptive resilience for consecutive disaster scenarios and a historical case study for a resilience trajectory in a multiple disaster *** review findings will assist disaster management policymakers and practitioners to formulate appropriate resilience enhancement strategies within a holistic framework in a multi-disaster timeline.

Omeprazole induces gastric transmucosal permeability to the peptide bradykinin

AIm:To investigate omeprazole-induced transepithelial gastric leak and its effects on the permeability of the peptides bradykinin and ***:Rat gastric corpus tissue was isolated and mounted in an Ussing chamber apparatus to evaluate the permeability of 3H-bradykinin,3H-oxytocin,and 14CEDTA in the presence or absence of *** chromatography was performed to identify any metabolic breakdown products of the peptides resulting from permeation through the gastric tissue,and thereby calculate the true flux of the ***:The flux rate ofintact 3H-bradykinin increased substantially after omeprazole addition (109.5%) compared to the DmSO vehicle control (14%).No corresponding change in flux ofintact 3H-oxytocin was observed under the same conditions (11.9% and 6.4% in the DmSO-and omeprazole-treated conditions,respectively).After exposure to omeprazole,the flux rate of 14C-EDTA also increased dramatically (122.3%) compared to the DmSO condition (36.3%).CONCLUSION:The omeprazole-induced gastric leak allows for transmucosal permeability to charged molecules as well as *** induced leak will allow certain peptides to permeate.

Non-operative successful management of a perforated small bowel diverticulum

Jejunoileal diverticula are rare and generally asymptomatic. In the few cases of patients who develop complications such as diverticulitis, perforation, obstruction, and/or hemorrhage, conventional treatment consists of surgical resection. We describe a case of perforated jejunoileal diverticulum with localized abscess and highlight the merits of surgical vs medical management. The patient is a 77-year-old male who presented with sharp, constant abdominal pain just inferior to the umbilicus. Administration of intravenous antibiotics results in complete and long-term resolution of the patient’s symptoms. In this report, we establish a framework for safely treating perforated small bowel diverticulum without surgical exploration.
