Seasonal variations of PM10 -- Trace elements, PAHs and Levoglucosan: Rural sugarcane growing area versus coastal urban area in Southeastern Florida, USA. Part II: Elemental concentrations

The largest sugarcane-growing area in the United States is in South Florida. An estimated 7 million tons of dry sugarcane leafy biomass is removed from the fields before harvest by burning the leaves off the sugarcane stalks. Preharvest sugarcane leaf foliage burning is a major source of airborne particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biogenic trace elements such as K, volatile hydrocarbons and other pollutants. In one harvesting period, approximately 22 million tons of C02, a greenhouse gas, is released, 7 million tons from leaf foliage preharvest burning alone and 15 million tons from burning sugarcane bagasse in the sugar mills for power generation. In this study, PMio was collected from Belle Glade, close to the sugarcane-growing area, and from Delray Beach, an urbanized area along the East Coast of Florida. The PM samples were analyzed for trace elements and close to organic compounds. To elucidate the importance of preharvest sugarcane biomass smoke emissions on air quality, 39 trace elements, 18 PAHs, and levoglucosan were selected to apportion ambient PM constituents. Al, Ca and to a great extend also Mg are the major soil-related trace elements and key markers for fugitive soil dust emissions. Similarly, sea salt aerosol blown from the Atlantic Ocean into Florida added appreciably to PMio trace elements concentration, especially Na and Cl. Approximately half of the sea salt aerosol (PMjo -portion) by mass is removed from the atmosphere during the transport of ocean air from Delray Beach to Belle Glade. Ambient acid displacement reactions caused a substantial portion of the Cl (30%) to be liberated from the sea salt aerosol to the atmosphere during transport as gaseous HC1. The PAH concentrations at Belle Glade were high when the biomass combustion markers levoglucosan and I< also showed the highest concentrations. Estimation of optimum design of structural systems via machine learning

Conservation status evaluation of Berberis species across the Karakoram Mountain Ranges, Pakistan using IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria

Berberis species medicinal plants in Pakistan are endangered, high-value with important eco-cultural, commercial and livelihood roles in mountain communities. To assess the geographical distribution of Berberis species across the Karakoram Mountain Ranges in Pakistan, we used IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria （2001） to calculate the extent of occurrence （EOO, 〈100 km^2） and the area of occupancy （AOO, 〈10 km^2） of Berberis pseudumbellata subsp, pseudumbellata and B. pseudumbellata subsp. gilgitica. Overgrazing and habitat loss were key population- limiting factors. The two subspecies had contrasting responses to temperature, elevation, precipitation and insect susceptibility. B. pseudumbellata subsp, gilgitica is endemic to Gilgit-Baltistan and grows in single-cropping zone （ar- eas 〉 200 m a.s.1.）. Status evaluation revealed that both subspecies meet the criteria set for critically endangered species. Prolonged disregard of its declining population trend might lead to its extinction; therefore, integrated con- servation efforts are necessary.

Comparative Effect of an Addition of a Surface Term to Woods-Saxon Potential on Thermodynamics of a Nucleon

In this study, we reveal the difference between Woods-Saxon(WS) and Generalized Symmetric WoodsSaxon(GSWS) potentials in order to describe the physical properties of a nucleon, by means of solving Schr¨odinger equation for the two potentials. The additional term squeezes the WS potential well, which leads an upward shift in the spectrum, resulting in a more realistic picture. The resulting GSWS potential does not merely accommodate extra quasi bound states, but also has modified bound state spectrum. As an application, we apply the formalism to a real problem,an α particle confined in Bohrium-270 nucleus. The thermodynamic functions Helmholtz energy, entropy, internal energy,specific heat of the system are calculated and compared for both wells. The internal energy and the specific heat capacity increase as a result of upward shift in the spectrum. The shift of the Helmholtz free energy is a direct consequence of the shift of the spectrum. The entropy decreases because of a decrement in the number of available states.

Characterization of Microstructural and Morphological Properties in As-deposited Ta/NiFe/IrMn/CoFe/Ta Multilayer System

Surface morphology and its relationship with microstructure in Ta/NiFe/IrMn/CoFe/Ta multilayer system deposited by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering have been investigated in dependence of Ta buffer and NiFe seed layer thicknesses using atomic force microscopy. The structural parameters such as grain size, dislocation density, texture and strain were calculated. For each surface, a self-affinity behavior with mean fractal dimensions in the range of 2.03-2.18 was found. Additionally, it was also observed that the surface of all samples has locally smooth textured surface structure in the short range. The texture aspect parameter and texture direction index have been obtained for isotropy/anisotropy surface texture. A significant relationship between the surface texture and the strength of the 〈111〉 texture in IrMn layer has been found. The analysis indicated that the surface roughness is strongly affected by the thicknesses of the NiFe seed and Ta buffer layers.

Daylight is one of the essential criteria for decent ***,in an urban kampung,access to daylight is limited due to the high-density population in urban Kampung *** study aims to improve the visual and thermal conditions by modifying the aperture of the light pipe based on visual daylight distribution,illuminance level,and thermal conditions in multi-storey houses in hot-humid *** pipe was developed experi-mentally through the simulation model to investigate the performance and impact on the visual and thermal conditions like operational temperature and RH in densely populated Kampung Kota without vertical *** to the results,the two-aperture light pipe residential space enhanced the current situation but did not fulfill the *** two aperture light pipe visually improved daylight distribution by 1.05%-31.36%and illumination level by 8.4%-14.8%.We also found that light pipe also impacts thermal conditions with a 10.92%RH reduction while at the same time increasing temperature up to 10.57%.Therefore,it can be concluded that a two-aperture light pipe has the potential to be applied to actual conditions in hot-humid climates.

Electronic structure calculations of rare-earth intermetallic compound YAg using ab initio methods

The structural, elastic and electronic properties of YAg-B2（CsCl） were investigated using the first-principles calculations. The energy band structure and the density of states were studied in detail, including partial density of states （PDOS）, in order to identify the character of each band. The structural parameters （lattice constant, bulk modulus, pressure derivative of bulk modulus） and elastic constants were also obtained. The results were consistent with the experimental data available in the literature, as well as other theoretical results.

The eastern part of Java Island is transversed by major faults such as Cepu,Blumbang,Surabaya,and Waru Segment,part of the Kendeng Fault,Wonsorejo Fault,Pasuruan Fault,and Probolinggo *** to the major fault,we used decomposition of identified fault from the Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS)observation data to identify the potential of local *** analyzed surface deformation due to the effect of major fault using scaling law and elastic half-space *** investigated the possibility of unidentified fault using strain rates based on velocity vector data before and after correcting the effect of a major *** found that strain calculation for principal strain value in the eastern part of Java Island is less than one microstrain/year and the dominant one with a compression pattern due to the Sunda subduction *** maximum shear strain rate value goes from 0.002 to 0.094 microstrain/year,and the dilatation rate value ranges from-0.141 to 0.038 microstrain/year,which correlates with the reverse of the Kendeng Fault.A higher compression pattern outside the major fault in a differential maximum shear strain rate might indicate a local fault.

A Statistical Mechanical Analysis on the Bound State Solution of an Energy-Dependent Deformed Hulthén Potential Energy

In this article, we investigate the bound state solution of the Klein Gordon equation under mixed vector and scalar coupling of an energy-dependent deformed Hulthén potential in D dimensions. We obtain a transcendental equation after we impose the boundary conditions. We calculate energy spectra in four different limits and in arbitrary dimension via the Newton-Raphson method. Then, we use a statistical method, namely canonical partition function, and discuss the thermodynamic properties of the system in a comprehensive way. We find out that some of the thermodynamic properties overlap with each other, some of them do not.

Structural,electronic and elastic properties of YCu from first principles

The structural, electronic and elastic properties of YCu compound in the B2 （CsCl） phase were investigated using the density functional theory （DFT） within the generalized gradient approximation （GGA）. The electronic density of states （DOS） obtained in this way accorded weU with the results of a recent study utilizing the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave （FLAPW） method. We also found that the density of d-states at the Fermi energy was low. The calculated equilibrium properties such as lattice constant, bulk modulus and its first derivative, and the elastic constants were in good agreement with experimental and theoretical results.
