The development of germ cell tumors(GCTs)is a unique pathogenesis occurring at an early developmental stage during specification,migration or colonization of pr.mordial germ cells(PGCs)in the genital *** driver.mutations could not be identified so far,the involvement of the epigenetic machinery during the pathogenesis seems to play a crucial ***,it is investigated whether epigenetic modifications occurring between the omnipotent two-cell stage and the pluripotent implanting PGCs might result in disturbances eventually leading to *** progress in understanding epigenetic mechanisms during PGC development is ongoing,little is known about the complete picture of its involvement during GCT development and eventual classification into clinical *** review will shed light into the current knowledge of the complex epigenetic and molecular contribution during pathogenesis of GCTs by emphasizing on early developmental stages until arrival of late PGCs in the *** questioned how misguided migrating and/or colonizing PGCs develop to either type Ⅰ or type Ⅱ ***,we asked how pluripotency can be regulated during PGC development and which epigenetic changes contribute to GCT *** propose that SOX2 and SOX17 determine either embryonic stem cell-like(embryonal carcinoma)or PGC-like cell fate(seminoma).Finally,we suggest that factors secreted by the microenvironment,*** and BmP inhibiting molecules,dictate the fate decision of germ cell neoplasia in situ(into seminoma and embryonal carcinoma)and seminomas(into embryonal carcinoma or extraembryonic lineage),indicating an important role of the microenvironment on GCT plasticity.

Hierarchical mechanical behavior of cobalt supracrystals related to nanocrystallinity

Here, we report on hierarchical mechanical behavior of 500-nm-thick Conanocrystal 3D superlattices （supracrystals） induced by either the crystalline structure （nanocrystallinity） or the length of the coating agent of Co nanocrystals. Increasing the nanocrystal shape anisotropy of Co nanocrystals through the control of their nanocrystallinities induces a higher level of ordering with both translational and orientational alignment of nanocrystals within the supracrystals. The hierarchy in ordering at various scales, i.e., fr.m the atomic lattice within the nanocrystals to the nanocrystal superlattices within supracrystals, is correlated with marked changes in the Young＇s modulus of supracrystals： Fr.m 0.7 ±0.4 to 1.7 ±0.5 and to 6.6 ±1.5 GPa as the crystalline structure of Co nanoparticles changes fr.m amorphous-Co to ε-Co and to hexagonal compact packing （hcp）-Co, respectively. moreover, for supracrystals of 7 nm amorphous Co nanoparticles, the Young＇s modulus decreases by one order of magnitude fr.m 0.7 ±0.4 to 0.08 ±0.03 GPa upon reducing the alkyl chain length of the ligands coating the Co nanoparticles fr.m C18 （oleic acid） to C12 （lauric acid）. The hierarchical mechanical behavior is rationalized using a dimensional model of the stress-strain relationship in supracrystals.

Background Precipitation plays an important role in crop production and soil greenhouse gas ***,how crop yield and soil nitrous oxide(N_(2)O)emission respond to precipitation change,particularly with different background precipitations(dry,normal,and wet years),has not been well *** this study,we examined the impacts of precipitation changes on corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission using a long-term(1981-2020,40 years)climate dataset as well as seven manipulated precipitation treatments with different background precipitations using the DeNitrification-DeComposition(DNDC)*** results showed large variations of corn yield and precipitation but small variation of soil N_(2)O emission among 40 *** corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission showed near linear relationships with precipitation based on the long-term precipitation data,but with different response patters of corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission to precipitation *** yield showed a positive linear response to precipitation manipulations in the dry year,but no response to increases in precipitation in the normal year,and a trend of decrease in the wet *** extr.me drought treatments reduced corn yield sharply in both normal and wet *** contrast,soil N_(2)O emission mostly responded linearly to precipitation *** in precipitation in the dry year reduced more soil N_(2)O emission than those in the normal and wet years,while increases in precipitation increased more soil N_(2)O emission in the normal and wet years than in the dry *** This study revealed different response patterns of corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission to precipitation and highlights that mitigation strategy for soil N_(2)O emission reduction should consider different background climate conditions.

Do black-furred animals compensate for high solar absorption with smaller hairs？ A test with a polymorphic squirrel species

In polymorphic mammalian species that display multiple color forms, those with dark, or.melanic pelage would be prone to overheating, especially if they live in warm climates, because their fur absorbs solar energy at a higher rate. However, exper.mental studies indicate that certain physical properties of fur of dark individuals appear to prevent, or.minimize heat stress, although it is not clear what properties do so. Here, we tested the possibility that black-furred individuals simply have shorter or thinner hair fibers, which would create a lighter （in terms of weight） coat or one that allows greater air flow for evaporative coo- ling. We examined museum specimens of eastern fox squirrels Sciurus niger, a species native to the United States and one that displays brown, grey or all-black pelage color, and used image analysis procedures to quantify hairs fr.m the dorsal surface and tail. Fr.m examination of 43 specimens （19 brown, 9 black and 15 grey）, and 1,720 hairs, we found no significant difference in hair lengths across color.morphs, but significant differences in hair fiber widths. Black squirrels had thinner body hairs than other forms （7% thinner）, but thicker tail hairs （9% thicker） than the others. Given that the dorsal surface would be directly exposed to solar radiation, we interpret this to be an adaptation to prevent heat stress during the day. The thicker tail hairs may be an adapta- tion for nighttime thermoregulation, since squirrels sleep with their tails wrapped around their bodies. These results add to a growing literature body of the functional significance of mammalian pelage [Current Zoology 57 （6）： 731-736, 2011].

Aggregation and mating success of Capnodis tenebrionis （Coleoptera： Buprestidae）

An understanding of the relative importance of extrinsic and intrinsic factors in determining the potential distribution and mating success of individuals is critical for the successful monitoring and management of pest species. Using a combination of field observations and a caged field exper.ment, we explored the roles of environmental and individual variation on the formation of mating aggregations and mating success in the buprestid beetle Capnodis tenebrionis （Linnaeus, 1767）, a pest species of stone fruit trees. Our field observations revealed that the formation of aggregations is influenced by a range of environmental factors including temperature, photoperiod, and population density. However, aggregations were not at random and were more likely to occur on the section of the plant with highest incidence of solar radiation and thus higher temperatures. Data fr.m our exper.ment with caged beetles in the field further indicate that the reproductive behavior of this species varies with temperature. The probability of a successful mating occurring was also positively related to both male and female size. Females of C. tenebrionis mate several times over a 4-h period, but generally not with the same male. Information obtained fr.m these studies is useful to define the most appropriate time for pest control, especially adopting strategies that interfere with reproduction.

Two intestinal microbiota-derived metabolites, deoxycholic acid and butyrate, synergize to enhance host defense peptide synthesis and alleviate necrotic enteritis

Background Necrotic enteritis(NE)is a major enteric disease in poultry,yet effective mitigation strategies r.main *** acid(DCA)and butyrate,two major.metabolites derived fr.m the intestinal microbiota,have independently been shown to induce host defense peptide(HDP)***,the potential synergy between these two compounds r.mains *** To investigate the possible synergistic effect between DCA and butyrate in regulating HDP synthesis and barrier function,we treated chicken HD11 macrophage cells and jejunal explants with DCA and sodium butyrate(NaB),either individually or in combination,for 24 ***,we performed rNA isolation and reverse transcrip-tion-quantitative PCr to analyze HDP genes as well as the major genes associated with barrier *** further determine the synergy between DCA and NaB in enhancing NE resistance,we conducted two independent trials with Cobb broiler *** each trial,the diet was supplemented with DCA or NaB on the day-of-hatch,followed by NE induction through sequential challenges with Eimeria maxima and Clostridium perfringens on d 10 and 14,*** recorded animal mortality after infection and assessed intestinal lesions on d *** impact of DCA and NaB on the microbiota in the ileum and cecum was evaluated through bacterial 16S rrNA gene *** We found that the combination of DCA and NaB synergistically induced multiple HDP genes in both chicken HD11 cells and jejunal ***,the gene for claudin-1,a major tight junction protein,also exhibited synergistic induction in response to DCA and ***,dietary supplementation with a combination of 0.75 g/kg DCA and 1 g/kg NaB led to a significant improvement in animal survival and a reduction in intestinal lesions compared to either compound alone in a chicken model of ***,the cecal microbiota of NE-infected chickens showed a marked decrease in SCFA-producing bacteria such as Bacteroides,F

Effects of a municipal effluent on the freshwater.mussel Elliptio complanata following challenge with Vibrio anguillar.m

The purpose of this study was to examine the cumulative effects of exposure to a pathogenic bacteria and municipal effluent in the freshwater.mussel Elliptio complanata. mussels were exposed to increasing concentrations of an ozone-treated effluent at 15°C for 7 days. A sub-group of mussels was inoculated with Vibrio anguillar.m and exposed to the same conditions as *** the exposure period, mussels were collected to assess hemocyte count and viability,immunocompetence（phagocytosis and nitrite production）, oxidative stress/inflammation（cyclooxygenase and lipid peroxidation） and oxygen radical/xenobiotic scavenging activity（metallothioniens, glutathione S-transferase）. The results showed that mussels exposed to municipal effluent had increased hemocyte counts, phagocytosis, nitrites, lipid peroxidation and metallothioneins. In the inoculated mussels, the same responses were observed, in addition to cyclooxygenase and glutathione S-transferase activities. multivariate analyses revealed that（1）the response pattern changed with effluent concentration, where increased responses observed at low effluent concentrations（〉10%, V/V） were attenuated at higher effluent concentrations,（2）the effluent produced more pronounced changes in lipid peroxidation, metallothionein and hemocyte viability, and（3） the simultaneous presence of V. anguillar.m led to more important changes in hemocyte count and viability and nitrite levels. In conclusion, the presence of *** could alter the response of mussels to municipal effluent, which could lead to increased inflammation in mussels.
