Quality of life for the elderly in an ageing society is receiving more attention than ever. After age 40, muscle mass loses at the rate of 3% to 8% every 10 years. More- over, the decline intensifies after 60 years old. Although many people do not experience changes in total body weight, their muscle mass is slowly replaced by body fat. Decreased muscle mass means lower muscle strength, which affects physical functioning. As a result, daily activities become con- strained, risks of fall and bone fracture elevated,

AIM:To elucidate etiologic associations between Helicobacter pylori(H pylori),lifestyle,environmental factors and gastric cardiac adenocarcinoma(GCA)among men. METHODS:A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Taiwan from 2000 to *** cases were newly confirmed as primary *** controls were selected matching with age,sex,and admission date to each *** were informedof potential risk factors with a structured question- naire by trained interviewers during hospitalization and provided a blood sample for the determination of H pylori *** ratio(OR)and 95%confidence interval(95%CI)were used to evaluate risk,and a multivariate conditional logistic regression model was performed. RESULTS:All participants recruited for this study were men,consisting of 41 cases and 205 *** of the univariate analysis showed that significant factors associated with the etiology of GCA included H pylori(OR =2.69,95%CI=1.30-5.53),cigarette smoking(OR= 2.28,95%CI=1.05-4.96),working or exercising after meals(OR=3.26,95%CI=1.31-8.11),salted food (OR=2.51,95%CI=1.08-6.11),fresh vegetables(OR =0.28,95%CI=0.09-0.80),fruits(OR=0.19,95% CI=0.04-0.89),and rice as principal food(OR=0.53, 95%CI=0.30-0.85).Multivariate conditional logistic regression models indicated that a significantly elevated risk of contracting GCA was associated with working or exercising after meals(OR=3.18,95%CI=1.23-9.36) and H pylori infection(OR=2.93,95%CI=1.42-6.01). In contrast,the consumption of fresh vegetables(OR =0.22,95%CI=0.06-0.83),fruits(OR=0.28,95% CI=0.09-0.79)and rice as principal food(OR=0.48, 95%CI=0.24-0.93)remained as significant beneficial factor associated with GCA. CONCLUSION:Working or exercising after meals and H pylori infection increase the risk of GCA,but higher intakes of rice,fresh vegetables and fruits reduce the risk.

Objectives: As smartphones become more popular, so do their applications. However, expectations of the elderly regarding the contribution of smartphone in controlling chronic diseases remain unclear. This research aims to understand senior retirees’ smartphone acceptance, perceived contribution of smartphone application in facilitating chronic disease control and their association. Findings from the study provide insights for the development of mobile applications in chronic disease management. Methods: convenience sampling was conducted to recruit 110 senior retirees who worked as volunteers in a regional hospital in Taipei. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire. Descriptive, chi-square and logistic regression statistics were applied to analyze data. Results: A total of 108 completed questionnaires were collected with a return rate of 98.2%. Mean age was 65.34 ± 9.59 years old. Of all respondents, 40.7% reported acceptance of internet-enabled smartphones and 54.6% expected that smartphones would facilitate chronic disease management in the future. However, a statistically significant 37.3% of those expecting smartphone to play a role in disease management did not accept smartphones yet. After controlling for age and education, logistic regression analysis showed that older adults with higher smartphone acceptance were more likely to expect use of smartphone in case management (OR = 7.439, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The research presented a scope for smartphone application to control chronic disease in the future. Despite a relatively lower level of smartphone acceptance, the elderly still expected a positive role for mobile appliances to play in chronic disease management.

Magnesium oxysulfate(MOS)whiskers are commonly synthesized through a dissolution-precipitation mechanism,wherein Mg(OH)_(2)dissolves to form Mg(OH)64−,followed by reactions with SO_(4)^(2−)and H_(2)O to yield MOS ***,the impact of Mg(OH)_(2)precursor properties on the formation process of MOS whiskers has been insufficiently explored,and sector-like and needle-like morphologies were both observed in previous *** this study,we systematically investigated how the properties of Mg(OH)_(2)precursors influenced the crystalline structure and morphology of MOS *** various experimental conditions,MgSO_(4)·5Mg(OH)_(2)·2H_(2)O(152MOS)whiskers were consistently obtained,regardless of Mg(OH)_(2)morphology and *** size of Mg(OH)_(2)emerged as a critical factor in shaping the morphology of 152MOS ***-sized Mg(OH)_(2)(≤106±37 nm)favored the formation of sector-like whiskers,while larger-sized Mg(OH)_(2)(≥206±98 nm)encouraged the development of needle-like *** distinction was attributed to the slower dissolution rate exhibited by larger-sized Mg(OH)_(2),maintaining a smaller number of 152MOS nuclei and promoting the growth of needle-like whiskers instead of the aggregation of 152MOS nuclei into sector-like *** addition,the effects of the molar ratio of Mg^(2+)to SO_(4)^(2−)and hydrothermal temperature were also *** average length and diameter of the needle-like whiskers prepared with Mg(OH)_(2)of 331±145 nm under optimized conditions were 77±32 and 0.39±0.10μm,*** study presented an effective strategy for controlling the morphology of 152MOS whiskers.

Regularized system identification has become the research frontier of system identification in the past *** related core subject is to study the convergence properties of various hyper-parameter estimators as the sample size goes to *** this paper,we consider one commonly used hyper-parameter estimator,the empirical Bayes(EB).Its convergence in distribution has been studied,and the explicit expression of the covariance matrix of its limiting distribution has been ***,what we are truly interested in are factors contained in the covariance matrix of the EB hyper-parameter estimator,and then,the convergence of its covariance matrix to that of its limiting distribution is *** general,the convergence in distribution of a sequence of random variables does not necessarily guarantee the convergence of its covariance ***,the derivation of such convergence is a necessary complement to our theoretical analysis about factors that influence the convergence properties of the EB hyper-parameter *** this paper,we consider the regularized finite impulse response(FIR)model estimation with deterministic inputs,and show that the covariance matrix of the EB hyper-parameter estimator converges to that of its limiting ***,we run numerical simulations to demonstrate the efficacy of ourtheoretical results.

Durable and efficient bi-functional catalyst,that is capable of both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction under acidic condition,are highly desired for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane water ***,we report a robust L-Ru/HfO_(2)heterostructure constructed via confining crystalline Ru nanodomains by HfO_(2)*** assembled with a proton exchange membrane,the bi-functional L-Ru/HfO_(2)catalyst-based electrolyzer presents a voltage of 1.57 and 1.67 V to reach 100 and 300 mA cm^(-2)current density,prevailing most of previously reported Ru-based materials as well as commercial Pt/C||RuO_(2)*** is revealed that the synergistic effect of HfO_(2)modification and small crystalline domain formation significantly alleviates the over-oxidation of *** importantly,this synergistic effect facilitates a dual-site oxide path during the oxygen evolution procedure via optimization of the binding configurations of oxygenated *** a result,the Ru active sites maintain the metallic state along with reduced energy barrier for the rate-determining step(^(*)O→^(*)OOH).Both of water adsorption and dissociation(Volmer step)are strengthened,while a moderate hydrogen binding is achieved to accelerate the hydrogen desorption procedure(Tafel step).Consequently,the activity and stability of acidic overall water splitting are simultaneously enhanced.

A distributed self-control coverage method for mobile multi-target based on virtual force(MMTVF)is proposed to monitor dynamic targets using a mobile sensor network(MSN).The dynamic coverage method is introduced to maintain network connectivity and optimize the coverage of moving *** method consists of two parts,one is the virtual force model which is proposed for motion control,and the other is the whale optimization algorithm which is improved to optimize node positions and achieve a steady state *** virtual resultant force stretches the network towards uncovered targets using its multi-target attractive force,maintains network connectivity during network stretching using its attractive force,and prevents node collisions while nodes are moving using its repulsive *** operating mechanism of the multi-target attractive force and other forces is thoroughly *** criteria for the model in different application scenarios are also *** comparisons demonstrate MMTVF has significant advantages over other similar approaches.

The challenge of high temperatures in deep mining remains harmful to the health of workers and their production efficiency The addition of phase change materials (PCMs) to filling slurry and the use of the cold storage function of these materials to reduce downhole temperatures is an effective approach to alleviate the aforementioned ***–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM was prepared in the *** composition,phase change latent heat,thermal conductivity,and cemented tailing backfill (CTB) compressive strength of the new material were *** heat transfer characteristics and endothermic effect of the PCM were simulated using Fluent *** results showed the following:(1) The new paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM improved the thermal conductivity of native paraffin while avoiding the water solubility of CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O.(2) The calculation formula of the thermal conductivity of CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O combined with paraffin was deduced,and the reasons were explained in principle.(3) The“enthalpy–mass scale model”was applied to calculate the phase change latent heat of nonreactive composite PCMs.(4)The addition of the paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM reduced the CTB strength but increased its heat absorption *** research can give a theoretical foundation for the use of heat storage backfill in green mines.
