Short Report: Association of IL-15 with Peripheral and Hepatic Insulin Sensitivity in Healthy Middle-Aged Men

Rodent study suggests that interleukin (IL)-15 administration enhances insulin sensitivity. Although it is well known that circulating levels of typical inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein [CRP] and IL-6) are positively associated with homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), there are no studies investigating the associations of other inflammatory markers including IL-15 with peripheral/hepatic insulin sensitivity in humans. The current study aimed to examine the relationship between the levels of adiopokines or inflammatory cytokines and insulin sensitivity in 8 healthy middle-aged men. Circulating levels of 10 insulin sensitizing adipokines or inflammatory cytokines (total adiponectin [APN], high molecular weight adiponectin [HMW-APN], IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-15, interferon [IFN]-γ, tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, and TNF-β) were measured. A stable-labeled frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test was performed to assess peripheral () and hepatic () insulin sensitivity estimated by 2-compartment minimal model. The levels of 3 inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-6, and IL-15) were significantly and inversely correlated with either and . The association between IL-15 and either or was significant even after adjusting for age and percent body fat (p < 0.01). The current study showed a possible inverse association between serum IL-15 level and peripheral/hepatic insulin sensitivity in healthy middle-aged males, independent of percent body fat;this association in humans warrants further study.

The Effects of Blue LED Light on Behavior and Retinal Function in Maternal and Offspring Mice

In the present study, we investigated whether blue light emission diode (LED) light exposure affects the maternal behavior of mice. The brain function of the offspring mice, including short-term memory, locomotor activity, anxiety-like behavior, and depression-like behavior, was evaluated. Pregnant mice at day 11 were housed in the apparatus for exposure to blue LED light during the daytime. Nesting behavior and the survival of pups were observed until weaning. After weaning, the offspring mice were bred in normal light conditions until 12 weeks old, and then the Y-maze test, open field test, and tail suspension test were performed. Retinal functions were evaluated by electroretinogram and histological analysis. Blue LED light exposure during the daytime induced retinal damage, but did not affect behavior related to maternal care in maternal mice. In the offspring mice, blue LED light exposure during the daytime did not affect the retina or brain functions. These findings suggest that blue LED light during the daytime might not be a risk factor for disruption of the mother-infant relationship or offspring brain development in mice.

Long-term prognosis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis treated with therapeutic low-density lipoprotein-apheresis in patients with severe kidney dysfunction and proteinuria

Background:The prognosis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis patients with nephrotic syndrome is estimated to be 10%-20%in 5 years and 30%-50%in 10 years,leading to end-stage kidney *** response rate with steroid therapy is 40%-60%.Therapeutic low-density lipoprotein-apheresis(LDL-A)may be effective in patients with steroid *** regarding the long-term prognosis of patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis receiving this therapy is ***:We investigated the effectiveness of treatment in 50 patients with primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis diagnosed between 1961 and 2017 at Kanazawa University Hospital and related *** patients were observed at least 12 months after biopsy or until end-stage kidney disease occurrence or ***:LDL-A was performed in four patients who presented with steroidresistant nephrotic syndrome(two patients had concurrent acute renal failure for which hemodialysis was performed).In comparison with 17 patients who did not receive LDL-A after 1989,the LDL-A group had higher urinary protein excretion(13.7 vs.5.2 g/day,P=0.053)and serum creatinine(4.11 vs.1.65 mg/dL)levels at onset,and a numerically higher remission rate(75.0%vs.58.7%)compared with the nonlipoprotein-apheresis ***:Therapeutic LDL-A can be performed for critical cases and may improve the remission rate.
