Utilization of Nano Rock Phosphate by Maize （Zea mays L.） Crop in a Vertisol of Central India

An attempt was made in the present investigation to utilize the vast deposit of rock phosphate （RP） of India by preparing nano RP using modem tool of nano-science and nano-technology for field application to maize crop （Zea mays L.）. To evaluate the efficacy of different nano RP, a field experiment was conducted during kharif season （June to September） of 2012 at India Institute of Soil Science （IISS）, Bhopal, taking maize as a test crop. The experiment consisted of five treatments （control, NK （100%）, NPK （100%）, NK （I00%）＋ 60 kg P205） as nano RP through Udaipur nano RP （34% P205） and Udaipur nano RP （31% P205） were tested in randomized block design with four replications. The results showed that the shelling percentage, 1,000 grain weight, grain and stover yield, etc., were significantly higher in the maize plant treated with Udaipur nano RP （34% P205） as compared to the control, which was being at par with single super phosphate （SSP） treated plants. The total P content and its uptake were higher （0.65% and 40.29 kg/ha） in SSP treated plant, which was closely followed by Udaipur nano RP 34% （0.63% and 38.29 kg/ha） over the control （0.60% and 27.82 kg/ha）. The SSP treated plants had significantly highest apparent P recovery （47.98%） which was comparable to Udaipur nano RP （34% P205）, where as the Udaipur nano RP （31% P205） had the lowest. The additional N and K uptake by the plant was also observed with application of P sources, which were ranged from 16.5 kg/ha to 37.2 kg/ha and 27.9 kg/ha to 64.7 kg/ha under different P treatments. These results showed that crop utilization of P from nano RP was at par with that of P from SSP while yield response to P from nano RP was marginally lower than to P from SSP but serve as a cheaper source.

Identification, occurrence, and validation of DRE and ABRE Cis-regulatory motifs in the promoter regions of genes of Arabidopsis thaliana

Plants posses a complex co-regulatory network which helps them to elicit a response under diverse adverse conditions. We used an in silico approach to identify the genes with both DRE and ABRE motifs in their promoter regions in Arabidopsis thaliana. Our results showed that Arabidopsis contains a set of 2,052 genes with ABRE and DRE motifs in their promoter regions. Approximately 72~o or more of the total predicted 2,052 genes had a gap distance of less than 40o bp between DRE and ABRE motifs. For positional orientation of the DRE and ABRE motifs, we found that the DR form （one in direct and the other one in reverse orientation） was more prevalent than other forms. These predicted 2,o52 genes include 155 transcription factors. Using microarray data from The Arabidopsis Information Resource （TAIR） database, we present 44 transcription factors out of 155 which are upregulated by more than twofold in response to osmotic stress and ABA treatment. Fifty-one transcripts from the one predicted above were validated using semiquantitative expression analysis to support the microarray data in TAIR. Taken together, we report a set of genes containing both DRE and ABRE motifs in their promoter regions in A. thaliana, which can be useful to understand the role of ABA under osmotic stress condition.

Effects of Different Nitrogen Fertilizer Levels and Native Soil Properties on Rice Grain Fe, Zn and Protein Contents

Deposition of protein and metal ions （Fe, Zn） in rice grains is a complex polygenic trait showing considerable environmental effect. To analyze the effect of nitrogen application levels and native soil properties on rice grain protein, iron （Fe） and zinc （Zn） contents, 32 rice genotypes were grown at three different locations each under 80 and 120 kg/hm2 nitrogen fertilizer applications. In treatments with nitrogen fertilizer application, the brown rice grain protein content （GPC） increased significantly （1.1% to 7.0%） under higher nitrogen fertilizer application （120 kg/hm2） whereas grain Fe/Zn contents showed non-significant effect of nitrogen application level, thus suggesting that the rate of uptake and translocation of macro-elements does not influence the uptake and translocation of micro-elements. The pH, organic matter content and inherent Fe/Zn levels of native soil showed significant effects on grain Fe and Zn contents of all the rice genotypes. Grain Zn content of almost all the tested rice genotypes was found to increase at Location III having loamy soil texture, neutral pH value （pH 6.83） and higher organic matter content than the other two locations （Locations I and II）, indicating significant influence of native soil properties on brown rice grain Zn content while grain Fe content showed significant genotype × environment interaction effect. Genotypic difference was found to be the most significant factor to affect grain Fe/Zn contents in all the tested rice genotypes, indicating that although native soil properties influence phyto-availability of micronutrients and consequently influencing absorption, translocation and grain deposition of Fe/Zn ions, yet genetic makeup of a plant determines its response to varied soil conditions and other external factors. Challenges in the Management of a Case of Secondary Abdominal Pregnancy

Introduction: Abdominal pregnancy, one of the rare forms of ectopic pregnancy demands a high index of suspicion for its timely diagnosis and intervention so as to prevent both maternal and neonatal complications. We presented a case of secondary abdominal pregnancy which was missed at the first instance at a private centre and came to us with nonspecific abdominal symptoms after an attempted termination of pregnancy by surgical means (dilation and curettage). Case presentation: A 24-year-old third gravida with two live issues at 10-week gestation came to us with complaints of pain lower abdomen, vomiting and inability to pass stool. She gave history of undergoing dilation and curettage (D&C) at a private hospital for termination of pregnancy about 20 days back. After thorough work-up and investigations, the diagnosis of secondary abdominal pregnancy was established and she was taken up for exploratory laparotomy with the removal of fetus with placenta. The patient progressed well with the postoperative period remaining uneventful. Conclusion: Secondary abdominal pregnancy poses as a challenge to clinicians working with limited diagnostic facilities. The condition may be life threatening if not handled meticulously.

Dynamic hip screw with locking side plate： a viable treatment option for intertrochanteric fracture

Objective： Dynamic hip screw （DHS） is recommended for the fixation of stable intertrochanteric fractures. Its postoperative cut-out rate ranges from I% to 6%. In osteoporotic bone, normal screws in DHS blade provide less anchorage compared to locking screws. This study aims to compare DHS with locking side plate and conventional side plate. Methods： Fifty consecutive patients with intertrochanteric fractures were randomly allocated for fixation with a standard DHS （group A） and locking DHS （Combi plate, group B）. We compared the clinical and radiological outcomes for the conventional DHS and locking DHS in intertrochanteric fractures. Functional outcome was evaluated using the Parker mobility score. Results： Coxa valga was found more frequently in group A than in group B （12% vs. 0%, P=0.42）. Coxa vara showed the same trend （12% vs. 8%, P=0.81）. Rate of restoration of postoperative neck-shaft angle within 20° of sound side was higher in group B （8% cases） than in group A （4% cases, P=0.98）. The rate of anteversion angle restoration within 10° of sound side was also higher in group B （100% vs. 88%, P=0.85）. The average lag screw slippage in group A and group B was 3.2 mm and 4.2 mm, the average fracture union duration was 17.1 weeks and 16.4 weeks, and the mean Parker score was 5.6 and 5.8 respectively. Screw cut-out was seen in one patient in group A. No cut-out was seen in any of the patient in group B. No patient developed deep infection, avascular necrosis, deep vein thrombosis or any other significant complications. Conclusion： The present study demonstrated that treating intertrochanteric fracture with a locking DHS allows sound bone healing and is not associated with any major complications. Although this report is promising, it should be interpreted with caution because only a prospective study with a large sample size would allow definitive conclusion.

Epidemiology of patients admitted to a major trauma centre in northern India

Objective： Trauma in India is an increasingly significant problem, particularly in light of rapid development and increasing motorization. Social changes are resulting in alterations in the epidemiology of trauma. The aim of the study was to assess the various epidemiological parameters that influence the cause of injury in the patients admitted to a major trauma centre in northem India. Methods： An observational study of 748 patients chosen by random assortment was carried out over a peri- od of 1 year （August 2008 to July 2009）. Age, sex, injury type and pattern were noted. Injury mode of upper and lower limbs was also noted. Results： Injuries occur predominately in the age group of 15-30 years. Males incurred more injury with male to female ratio of 6：1. The most vulnerable group was motorcycle users. Among the injured, farmers were the most commonly involved. Blunt injuries （94.92%） were much more common than penetrating injuries. Among patients with head injury, two wheelers related accidents were the most common （40.3%）. Most spinal cord injuries were caused by falls from height （51.09%）. Most lower limb fractures were simple type. Compound fractures of the lower limb were more common than up- per limb fractures. Conclusion： Strict enforcement of traffic rules, combined with improved infrastructure and behavior change can decrease the burden of road traffic accidents in India and other developing countries. This study could assist in raising the profile of road traffic accidents as a public health problem which needs to be addressed as a preventable cause of mortality and morbidity, and plan- ning appropriate interventions for this major challenge. Preventive strategies should be made on the basis of these epidemiological trends.
