Aim:To investigate the mechanism of polypeptide from Chlamysfarreri (PCF)protecting HaCaT cells from apoptosis induced by UVA plus UVB in ***:An apoptotic model of UV irradiation-induced HaCaT cells *** 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromideassay,agarose gel electrophoresis,biochemical methods,and Western blottingwere employed in the ***:PCF inhibited the UV irradiation-inducedapoptosis of HaCaT *** strongly reduced the intracellular reactive oxygenspecies level,enhanced activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione per-oxidase and increased the total anti-oxidative capacity in HaCaT cells followingUV ***,we found that PCF could inhibit the phosphorylationof c-Jun amino-terminal kinase and the activity of caspase-3 in a concentration-dependent ***:PCF protected HaCaT cells from apoptosis in-duced by UVA plus UVB,mainly through decreasing the intracellular ROS leveland increasing the activities of anti-oxidative enzymes to block the ROS-JNK-caspase-3-apoptosis signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND:Many Chinese herbs,especially herbal injections,have been shown to have anti-tumor effects in recent ***,since most reports focus on the clinical effectiveness of these herbs,their mechanisms of action are not well *** this study,we assessed apoptosis in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line HepG2 induced by an injectable extract from the seed of Coix lacryma-jobi (Semen coicis,SC),and monitored the expression of Bcl-2 and ***:Injectable SC was applied to HepG2 cells at different concentrations and the cells were collected 12,24 and 48 hours later.5-fluorouracil was used as a positive control group,and fluorescence-activated cell-sorting cytometry was used to measure the apoptosis rate of HepG2 cells and the expression of Bcl-2 and caspase-8 ***:SC induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells in a concentration and time-dependent manner,and the expression of caspase-8 was elevated and ***,it did not significantly influence the expression of ***:Injectable SC may induce apoptosis in HCC cells by regulating the expression of caspase-8.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is found to be related to increased prevalence of gallstones and acute acal- culous cholecystitis. In this study we assessed the prevalence of cholelithiasis in male patients with SCI and the correla- tion of cholelithiasis with age and weight of patients, level of injury, as well as severity and duration of SCI. METHODS: One hundred male SCI patients (58 patients rated ASIA A or B and 42 rated ASIA C or D) aged more than 20 years (average 46.5 years) suffered from a spinal cord injury for more than one year. One hundred male vo- lunteers served as controls without SCI and biliary diseases (age range 20-68 years; average 42.6 years). The two groups were subjected to ultrasonography of the gallbladder and biliary tract. RESULTS: The prevalence of cholelithiasis in the group of SCI patients and the control group was 26% and 10% re- spectively. Significant differences in the prevalence of cho- lelithiasis were found between the normal controls and SCI patients and between high- and low-level injury (P 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: SCI represents a major risk factor for the development of cholelithiasis, especially in patients with high-level injury. Cholelithiasis in SCI patients is not relat- ed to their age and weight, the severity of spinal lesion, and the duration of spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the expressions of E-eadherin and alpha-catenin in pancreatic carcinoma and their relationship with biological behaviors, and clarify the mechanism of invasion and metastasis of pancreatic cancer. METHODS: The expressions of E-eadherin and alpha-catenin was examined in 47 patients with infiltrative ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas and 12 specimens of normal pancreatic tissues by immunohistochemical technique (PicTure^(TM) two-step method). Proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was tested as an index of the proliferation degree of pancreatic cancer cells. RESULTS: The immunoreactivity of E-cadherin and alpha-catenin was expressed by normal ductal and acinar cells with strong membranous staining at the intercellular border in 12 specimens of normal pancreatic tissues. The abnormal rate of E-cadherin expression in pancreatic cancer was 53.2% (25/47), and it was significantly related to differentiation, high proliferation degree and lymph node and liver metastases (P0.05, all). This article profiles current status of spread and control of HIV/AIDS in China. China has a significant population of MSM (men who have sex with men) and they have been becoming very much alive in many ways since 1990s due to recent social changes. Some surveys indicate that great many of MSM are engaged in high-risk behaviors. In addition, majority of MSM have also experienced sexual encounters with women sometimes in their lives, which possibly con- tribute to spread of HIV to women. Some reports documented that HIV is becoming rampant among MSM since more than 1% of them are now infected. Political, cultural and custom elements could hinder intervention activities against HIV spread among MSM. Fortunately, many cities in China have seen that MSM were in cooperation with responsible institutions carrying out certain intervention measures. The general situation is promising. The authors forecast that the fast HIV spread among MSM of China could possibly be halted within several years when the authorities become more sensible to this issue, health service institutions offer unswerving efforts toward the MSM community and those who involve in MSM undertakes necessary responsibilities.

＜正＞Objective The present study is to elucidate the protective effect of Polysaccharide from Spirulina Platensis （PSP） on dopaminergic neurons of MPTP induced C57BL/6J *** Animals were divided into 5 groups:（1） NS （i.g.）×10 d;（2） NS（i.g.）×10 d + MPTP（15 mg/kg,i.p.）×4;（3） PSP（200 mg/kg,i.g.）×10 d + MPTP（15 mg/kg,i.p.）×4;（4） PSP（400 mg/kg,i.g.）×10 d + MPTP（15 mg/kg,i.p.）×4;（5） PSP（800 mg/kg,i.g.）×10 d + MPTP（15 mg/kg,i.p.）×4. Immunohistochemistry assay,RT-PCR,HPLC-ECD were used to detect the protein and mRNA levels of tyrosine hydroxylase （TH） and dopamine transporters（DAT） in the substantia nigra（SN）,the content of dopamine（DA） and its metabolites: 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl acetic acid（DOPAC）,homovanilic acid（HVA） in the striatum（Str）.The results showed that,compared with control group,the TH and DAT immunoreactive stain in MPTP group was significantly decreased in the SN（P＜0.01）,as well as the TH mRNA and DAT mRNA（P＆lt;0.01）.The content of DA,DOPAC and HVA in Str was also decreased（P＜0.01）.While in PSP 800 mg/kg pretreatment group,the protein and mRNA levels of TH and DAT in the SN were increased（P＜0.05）,and the content of DA,DOPAC and HVA in the Str was also increased compared with MPTP group（P＜0.05）.The results suggested that PSP plays a protective effect on MPTP-damaged dopaminergic neurons of C57BL/6J mice.

AIM: To study the therapeutic effectiveness of intra-tumorinjection of Xiao-Zhi-Ling(XZL) on transplanted hepatomain ***: Sixty rats were divided into 3 groups (groupsS, X and E), 20 in each. Different drugs were injected intothe implanted hepatoma (Group S with 0.2 mi saline ascontrol, group X with 0.2 mi XZL, group E with 0.2 miethanol). After 3 days and 8 days respectively, we detectedthe hepatoma volume (HV), the level of albumin, alanineaminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST)and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum, and the expressionof proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in ***: The results were obtained after 3 days, the HVsin groups X and E were smaller than those in group S (groupX vs S P=0.010*, group Evs S P=0.002*, P＜0.05). Thelevels of ALT and AST in group S and X were lower thanthose in group E (ALT Group S vs E P=0.019*, group X vsEP=0.003*, P＜0.05; AST group X vs E P=0.002*, P＜0.05).The levels of ALP and PCNA labeling index in group X werelower than those in group S and E (ALP group X vs SP=0.000*, group X vs E P=0.000*. P＜0.05; PCNA group XvsS P=0.008*, group X vsE P=0.048*, P＜0.05). The levelsof creatinine in group S were lower than those in group E(group S vs E P=0.017, P＜0.05). The degree of tumornecrosis in group S was lower than those in groups X and E(group S vsX P=0.006*, group S vs E P=0.006*, P＜0.05).After 8 days, the HVs in groups X and E were smaller thanthose in group S (group X vs S P=0.007*, group Evs SP=0.004*, P＜0.05). The difference of HVs between groupsX and E was not significant. The levels of albumin, ALT, ASTand creatinine in group X were not higher than those inother groups, the levels of ALP and PCNA in group X werelower than those in groups S and E (ALP group X vs EP=0.006* P＜0.05; PCNA group X vsS P=0.044*, group Xvs E P=0.021*, P＜0.05).
