More Benefit from Less Land： A New Rice-Pea-Rice Cropping Pattern for Resource-Poor Farmers of Bangladesh

The experiments were conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 crop seasons to determine the economic viability of planting legumes for both vegetable and forage purposes in the fallow period between monsoon-rice and spring-rice. The objectives were to ensure better land utilization, break up the mono cropping, improve soil health, and generate extra-income for small and resource-poor farmers of Bangladesh. Crop compositions used in the experiments were monsoon-rice (cv. BRRIdhan-32, BRRIdhan-39 and BINAdhan-4) followed by pulses (grasspea, chickpea and field pea) followed by spring-rice (cv. BRRIdhan-28, BRRIdhan-29 and BINAdhan-6). Based on the data from two years in a pooled analyses, it was observed that monsoon-rice variety BINAdhan-4, followed by field pea (as vegetable & forage) and spring-rice variety BINAdhan-6 produced the highest yields of 5.0 t ha-1 rice grain, 3.25 t ha-1 (green vegetable) + 18.1 t ha-1 (forage) legumes and 7.8 t ha-1 rice grain, respectively. The cropping pattern of monsoon-rice (BINAdhan-4)-field pea (as vegetable + forage)-spring-rice (BINAdhan-6) gave the highest net return of USD$1,705 ha-1 year-1 compared to other patterns with different rice varieties and chickpea and grasspea. This is a new finding, and is being practiced by farmers of Bangladesh who have enhanced their farm income substantially. This has also generated job opportunities for rural women to pick the green vegetable of field pea.

Introduction: The health related quality of life (HRQoL) has an important role in adults suffering from diabetes. Objective: To assess the health related quality of life in adult with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess diabetic patient’s HRQoL on 119 purposively selected type-2 DM patients (aged ≥ 18 years and duration of diabetes ≥ 1 year). Data were collected by face-to-face interview and by medical record review through a Bangle version of SF-36 semi-structured questionnaire and a checklist. Place and period of study: The study was conducted at outpatient department in Gopalganj 50 bedded diabetic hospital from 1st January, 2018 to 31st December 2018. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 52.34 (SD ± 10.19) years. Age group shows a significant difference associated with all domains of quality of life except role emotion (>0.05), gender shows the significant in social and pain domain (0.05) respectively co-morbidity shows the significant difference with all domains expect pain (>0.05). Physical functioning, emotional, pain and general health of the quality of life show the significant difference associated with use of insulin (Conclusion: The overall QoL of type-2 DM patients was poor and had lower score of health related quality of life.

Compartmentalized Metabolic Engineering for Artemisinin Biosynthesis and Effective Malaria Treatment by Oral Delivery of Plant Cells

Artemisinin is highly effective against drug-resistant malarial parasites, which affects nearly half of the global population and kills 〉500 000 people each year. The primary cost of artemisinin is the very expensive process used to extract and purify the drug from Artemisia annua. Elimination of this apparently unnecessary step will make this potent antimalarial drug affordable to the global population living in endemic regions. Here we reported the oral delivery of a non-protein drug artemisinin biosynthesized （~0.8 mg/g dry weight） at clinically meaningful levels in tobacco by engineering two metabolic pathways targeted to three different cellular compartments （chloroplast, nucleus, and mitochondria）. The doubly transgenic lines showed a three-fold enhancement of isopentenyl pyrophosphate, and targeting AACPR, DBR2, and CYP71AV1 to chloroplasts resulted in higher expression and an efficient photo-oxidation of di- hydroartemisinic acid to artemisinin. Partially purified extracts from the leaves of transgenic tobacco plants inhibited in vitro growth progression of Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells. Oral feeding of whole intact plant cells bioencapsulating the artemisinin reduced the parasitemia levels in challenged mice in comparison with commercial drug. Such novel synergistic approaches should facilitate low-cost production and delivery of artemisinin and other drugs through metabolic engineering of edible plants.

Management Practices for Lentil as Relay Crop in the Rice Based Cropping System

The field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Institute (BARI), Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during rabi season of 2009 to find out the suitable management package for better plant establishment and higher yield of lentil under relay cropping. The experiment was based on three genotypes-Rajbari local, X95S-167(4) and X95S-136; two types of rice straw height-10 cm and 30 cm; three seed rates (kg/ha)-e. g., 30, 50 and 60, and three levels of fertilizer-control, 30-60-20 kg/ha of N-P 2 O 5 -K 2 O and 30-60-30 kg/ha of N-P 2 O 5 -K 2 O. The experiment was laid out in a split-split-split-plot design with three replications. Genotype was placed in the main-plot, rice straw height was in the sub-plot, seed rate was in the sub-sub-plot and fertilizer level was in the sub-sub-sub-plot. From this study, it was observed that lentil genotype X95S-136X planted with a rice straw height under 30 cm, at a seed rate of 50 kg/ha, and with a fertilizer level at 30-60-30 kg/ha of N-P 2 O 5 -K 2 O produced the highest lentil seed yield of 2,070 kg/ha and the lowest seed yield (550 kg/ha ) was obtained from genotype Rajbari local, planted with a rice straw height under 10 cm, at a seed rate of 30 kg/ha and no fertilizer. Similar result regarding seed and straw yield was also found in the farmer"s field. The accession X95S-136 along with improved production technologies produced the highest grain and straw yield, and net return but the lowest grain and straw yield as well as net return were obtained by Rajbari local in the demonstration field. It was also identified that, by the inclusion of lentil in the transplanted monsoon rice field, lands could be brought under lentil cultivation to enhance lentil production, provide human nutrition and also to ensure soil health improvement for sustainable production system.

Metformin Induced Lactic Acidosis What Is the Effective Treatment?

Metformin is known to be an effective treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin induced lactic acidosis (MALA) is a serious illness which should identify and treat urgently. In this review article, we will present our own data and review the literature to highlight the importance of recognizing MALA;causes, presentations and the proper treatment, even though there are few published studies discussing MALA treatment modalities. The two cases that we presented here were patients admitted to the ICU and undergoing hemodynamic instability, which improved after removal of Metformin and clearance of associated lactic acidosis with SLED and CVVH. A case could be made for SLED and CVVH as modalities of choice for patients with MALA and hemodynamic instability, but further research is needed in this direction.

DNA methyltransferases 1 (DNMT1) has been looked as crucial targets against various types of cancers. md simulations have advanced to a point where the atomic level information of biological macromolecule (protein or DNA-protein or protein-protein) can easily be advantageous to predict the functionality. In this study we utilize xanthomicrol and galloyl compounds to investigate potential compounds for the inhibition of DNMT1, and the results of these two compounds are compared with drug decitabine. Xanthomicrol and galloyl are found to dock successfully within the active site of DNMT1. A comparison of the inhibitory potential of screened xanthomicrol inhibited DNMT1 approximately is identical with those of their corresponding drugs, decitabine. The stability of the DNMT1 with the best docked xanthomicrol, were further analysed in molecular dynamics (md) simulation and compared with those of the respective drugs namely decitabine which revealed stabilization of these complexes within 300 ns of simulation with better stability of DNMT1.

Effective containment of the COVID-19 pandemic requires rapid and accurate detection of the *** chain reaction(PCR)remains the gold standard for COVID-19 *** this article,we report the performance of a cost-effective modular microfluidic reverse transcription(RT)-PCR and RT-loop mediated isothermal amplification(RTLAMP)platform,Epidax®,for the point-of-care testing and confirmation of *** platform is versatile and can be reconfigured either for screening using endpoint RT-PCR or RT-LAMP tests or for confirmatory tests using realtime ***®is highly sensitive and detects as little as 1 RNA copy perµL for real-time and endpoint RT-PCR,while using only half of the *** achieved comparable results with those of a commercial platform when detecting SARS-CoV-2 viruses from 81 clinical RNA ***®can also detect SARS-CoV-2 from 44 nasopharyngeal samples without RNA extraction by using a direct RT-PCR assay,which shortens the sample-to-answer time to an hour with minimal user ***,we validated the technology using an RT-LAMP assay on 54 clinical RNA ***,our platform provides a sensitive,cost-effective,and accurate diagnostic solution for lowresource settings.

Outcomes of Early Primary Endoscopic Realignment and Delayed Reconstruction in the Management of Posterior Urethral Injury in Male

Background: Posterior urethral injury usually occurs in male patients with pelvic fractures. Posterior urethral injuries are associated with considerable morbidity including urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and urethral stricture. Objective: To compare the outcomes between early primary endoscopic realignment and delayed reconstruction in the management of male patients of posterior urethral injury. Methodology: This prospective study was conducted in the department of urology and department of casualty, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2015 to June 2017 among 50 male patients with posterior urethral injury. Fifty patients were randomly allocated into two groups;the group A consisted of 24 patients underwent early primary endoscopic realignment within 10 days after posterior urethral injury and the group B consisted of 26 patients underwent delayed reconstruction in form of anastomotic urethroplasty after 3 months. All patients were followed up at 3rd, 6th and 9th month after the procedure. Outcome variables were post-operative urethral stricture, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: The mean (±SD) age of the study patients was almost similar between the groups (28.8 ± 8.4 vs. 27.4 ± 7.2 years, p = 0.486). In group A, 83.33% patients developed postoperative urethral stricture, none of them developed urinary incontinence and 20.83% developed erectile dysfunction;On the other hand, in group B, these rates were 38.46%, 23.07% and 38.46% respectively. Postoperative urethral stricture formation was significantly higher in Group A (p = 0.0012) but urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction rates were significantly higher in Group B (p = 0.018 and p = 0.042 respectively). Conclusion: Early primary endoscopic realignment is better than delayed reconstruction in the management of male patients with posterior urethral injury. It provides less postoperative complica
