Invaders’ control on post-disturbance succession in coastal mangroves

Aims In recent years,coastal mangroves have been frequently affected by large disturbances(cyclones,hurricanes,flooding and tsunamis)and post-disturbance vegetation is often dominated by small stature mangrove,mangrove-associate and non-mangrove species potentially affecting ecosystem *** on the processes of mangrove vegetation development and recovery(succession)following normal and large disturbances will benefit practitioners in designing robust ecosystem management/restoration *** we propose a conceptual model of disturbance-mediated succession in *** Based on field observations and species’life history traits,we develop conceptual models of mangrove succession under normal disturbance regime and recently experienced increased frequency of large *** evaluate our conceptual models by conducting a scenario testing *** Findings We suggest two predominant processes affecting mangrove succession after disturbance:propagule limitation due to damage of seed producing mature trees and dispersal barrier resulting from biological invasion associated with large *** argue that large disturbances affect mature trees more than the small-stature non-tree(shrubs,herbs and climbers)species creating a larger propagule shortage for mangrove tree species than non-tree ***,large disturbances facilitate invasion of free-floating aquatics,which may interfere with the flow-facilitated propagule dispersal and seedling establishment of mangrove *** a scenario testing experiment,we have shown that similar levels of disturbance impact vegetation development and recovery differently depending on the presence or absence of invasive *** conclude that since biological invasion is one of the major drivers of post-disturbance mangrove succession,the dimension of biological invasion should be included in prediction,management and restoration of mangrove forests.

Background: Emergence agitation (EA) is a common phenomenon observed in pediatric patients following general anesthesia. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of propofol and fentanyl in preventing EA and to compare their associated complications or side effects. Methods: This prospective randomized observational comparative study was conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital from July 2013 to June 2014. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of propofol and fentanyl on EA in children aged 18 to 72 months undergoing circumcision, herniotomy, and polypectomy operations. Ninety children were included in the study, with 45 in each group. Patients with psychological or neurological disorders were excluded. Various parameters including age, sex, weight, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class, duration of anesthesia, Saturation of Peripheral Oxygen (SPO2), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) score, duration of post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) stay, incidence of laryngospasm, nausea, vomiting, and rescue drug requirement were compared between the two groups. Results: Age, sex, weight, ASA class, and duration of anesthesia were comparable between the two groups. Perioperative SpO2 and HR were similar in both groups. However, the PAED score was significantly higher in the fentanyl group during all follow-ups except at 30 minutes postoperatively. The mean duration of PACU stay was significantly longer in the fentanyl group. Although the incidence of laryngospasm was higher in the fentanyl group, it was not statistically significant. Conversely, nausea or vomiting was significantly higher in the fentanyl group. The requirement for rescue drugs was significantly higher in the fentanyl group compared to the propofol group. Conclusion: Both propofol and fentanyl were effective in preventing emergence agitation in pediatric patients undergoing various surgical procedures under sevoflurane anesthesia. However, propo

Background: Following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), delirium emerges as a prevalent complication. This study aimed to assess the correlation between elevated serum cortisol levels and the occurrence of postoperative delirium subsequent to off-pump CABG. Methods: Conducted in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at BSMMU from October 2020 to September 2022, this comparative cross-sectional study included a total of 44 participants. Subjects, meeting specific criteria, were purposefully assigned to two groups based on off-pump CABG. Group A (n = 22) consisted of patients with normal serum cortisol levels, while Group B (n = 22) comprised individuals with high serum cortisol levels on the first postoperative day. Delirium onset was assessed at the bedside in the ICU on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th postoperative days using standard tools, namely the Richmond Agitation Sedation score (RASS) and The Confusion Assessment Method (CAM-ICU). Data were collected based on the presence or absence of delirium. Statistical analysis utilized SPSS version 26.0, employing an independent Student’s t-test for continuous data and chi-square and Fischer’s exact test for categorical data. A p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Group-A had a mean age of 54.50 ± 17.97, and Group-B had a mean age of 55.22 ± 15.45, both with a male predominance (81.81% and 86.36% respectively). The mean serum cortisol level was significantly higher in Group B (829.71 ± vs. 389.98 ± 68.77). Postoperative delirium occurred in 27.3% of Group B patients, statistically significant compared to the 4.5% in Group A. However, patients in Group B who developed delirium experienced significantly longer postoperative ICU and hospital stays (79.29 ± 12.27 vs. 11.44 ± 2.85, p ≤ 0.05). Background: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) stands as a prominent postoperative complication in on-pump cardiac surgery, with repercussions on morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization duration. Current diagnostic criteria relying on serum creatinine levels exhibit a delayed identification of AKI, prompting an exploration of alternative biomarkers. Aims and Objectives: This study is designed to overcome diagnostic constraints and explore the viability of serum Cystatin C as an early predictor of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in individuals undergoing on-pump cardiac surgery. The investigation aims to establish the relationship between serum Cystatin C levels and the onset of AKI in patients subjected to on-pump cardiac surgery. Primary objectives involve the assessment of the diagnostic effectiveness of serum Cystatin C, its comparison with serum creatinine, and the exploration of its potential for the early identification and treatment of AKI. Methodology: Conducted as a single-center study at the cardiac surgery department of BSMMU in Bangladesh from September 2020 to August 2022, a comparative cross-sectional analysis involved 31 participants categorized into No AKI and AKI groups based on Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. Data collection encompassed preoperative, post-CBP (cardiopulmonary bypass) conclusion at 2 hours, postoperative day 1, and postoperative day 2 intervals. Statistical analyses included Chi-squared tests, independent Student’s t-tests, and one-sample t-tests. Significance was set at P Results: The study revealed no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the No AKI and AKI groups, except for CPB time and cross-clamp time. Serum Cystatin C levels in the AKI group exhibited statistical significance at various time points, highlighting its potential as an early detector. Sensing and Uptake of Nitrogen in Rice Plant: A Molecular View

As a main feature of plant autotrophy, assimilation of inorganic nitrogen (N) is not only of fundamental interest to the crop, but also a crucial factor in crop productivity. N is the main plant mineral nutrient needed for chlorophyll production and other plant cell components (proteins, nucleic acids and amino acids). I highlighted the novel aspects of N responsive sensors, transporters and signaling molecules recently identified in the monocot rice plant, and discussed their potential roles in N sensing and transporting. Furthermore, over the last couple of years, N sensing has been shown to be affected by different external factors, which act as local signals to trigger systemic signaling coordinated by long-distance transport or mobile signals in plant body. Understanding of this complex regulatory network provides a foundation mechanism for the development of novel strategies to increase the acquisition and transportation efficiency of nitrogen under varying N conditions for rice production.

A New Algorithm for a Condenser Design for Large-Scale Nuclear Power Plants in Tropical Region

This work presents a new velocity search algorithm for designing a condenser of a 1200 MWe large-scale nuclear power plant situated in tropical *** this,the condenser pressure was considered in the range of 7.5-15 kPa while its tube inner diameter was taken as 28 mm with 1 mm tube wall *** longitudinal and transverse condensers with multiple shell tanks and varied shell tank lengths from 8-14 m have been considered in this *** different tertiary coolant temperature rises were chosen as 4°C,8°C and 12°C by considering tropical region average reservoir water temperature range of 28°C to 32°C during *** of tertiary coolant was kept within 0.75-1.5 m/s to ensure sufficient turbulence to avoid erosion-corrosion of the *** simulation has been employed to obtain tube-side pressure drop and convection heat transfer coefficient directly from tertiary coolant inlet velocity using κ-ω turbulent flow model.A new iterative“Velocity-search algorithm”has been developed that focuses on finding the correct tertiary coolant velocity instead of overall heat transfer *** revealed that velocity-search algorithm yielded very close to the important physical and thermal parameters of condenser compared to the existing design data in large scale nuclear power ***-search algorithm has given less number of condenser design physical parameters that meets the velocity acceptance criteria for longitudinal condenser compared to the transverse ***,velocity-search algorithm is found to be more reliable,robust,and consistent for condenser design compared to the conventional design algorithm used in Log-Mean Temperature Difference method.

Is the Trade-led Growth Hypothesis Valid for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?Evidence from an ARDL Approach

This study examines the trade-led growth(TLG)hypothesis for the Kingdom of Saudi *** time-series annual data for the period 1985-2019,the ARDL approach and Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test are applied to accomplish the *** ARDL estimation reveals that trade openness positively causes economic growth in both the long and short run,and the TLG hypothesis is found valid for the *** Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test results have evidenced several unidirectional *** them,trade openness causes economic growth and supports the ARDL finding and hence the TLG hypothesis for the ***,trade openness causes gross fixed capital formation,and the labor force stimulates both economic growth and trade *** findings recommend that the Kingdom may increase its trade to reap further benefits and enhance its income growth.

Antioxidant,antibacterial and cytotoxic effects of the phytochemicals of whole Leucas aspera extract

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant,antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of whole Leucas aspera(Labiatae)(***)alcoholic ***:Whole *** powder was extracted by absolute ethanol(99.50%).The ethanolic extract was subjected to antioxidant,antibacterial and brine shrimp lethality ***:The extract showed potent radical scavenging effect(antioxidant)with IC_(50)value of(99.58±1.22)μg/mL which was significant(P<0.01)in comparison to ascorbic acid with IC_(50)value of(1.25±0.95)μg/*** case of antibacterial screening,the extract showed notable antibacterial effect against the tested microbial ***(P<0.05)zone of inhibitions against Gram positive Bacillus subtilis[(12.00±1.32)mm]and Bacillus megaterium[(13.00±1.50)mm],Staphylococcus aureus[(8.00±0.50)mm]and Gram negative Salmonella typhi[(6.00±0.50)mm],Salmonella paratyphi[(8.00±1.00)mm],Shigella dysenteriae[(9.00±1.32)mm]and Vibrio cholerae[(9.00±0.66)mm]was *** brine shrimp lethality bioassay,the extract showed the LC_(50)value as(181.68±2.15)μg/mL which was statistically significant(P<0.01)compared to positive control vincristine sulfate[LC_(50)=(0.76±0.04)μg/mL].Conclusions:The results demonstrate that the ethanolic extract of *** could be used as antibacterial,pesticidal and various pharmacologic actives.

Human and ecological risks of metals in soils under different land-use types in an urban environment of Bangladesh

Trace metal contamination in soil is of great concern owing to its long persistence in the environment and toxicity to humans and other *** of six potentially toxic trace metals,Cr,Ni,Cu,As,Cd,and Pb,in urban soils were measured in Dhaka City,*** from different land-use types,namely,agricultural field,park,playground,petrol station,metal workshop,brick field,burning sites,disposal sites of household waste,garment waste,electronic waste,and tannery wast,and construction waste demolishing sites,were *** concentration ranges of Cr,Ni,Cu,As,Pb,and Cd in soils were 2.4–1258,8.3–1044,9.7–823,8.7–277,1.8–80,and 13–842 mg kg^-1,*** concentrations of metals were subsequently used to establish hazard quotients(HQs)for the adult *** metal HQs decreased in the order of As>Cr>Pb>Cd>Ni>*** was the most vital exposure pathway of studied metals from soils followed by dermal contact and *** range of pollution load index(PLI)was 0.96–17,indicating severe contamination of soil by trace *** the comprehensive potential ecological risk(PER),soils from all land-use types showed considerable to very high ecological *** findings of this study revealed that in the urban area studied,soils of some land-use types were severely contaminated with trace ***,it is suggested that more attention should be paid to the potential health risks to the local inhabitants and ecological risk to the surrounding ecosystems.
