Geomorphological, Geological and Engineering Geological Aspects for Sustainable Urban Planning of Mymensingh City, Bangladesh

Geomorphological, geological and engineering geological information is used as the base data to characterize the subsurface condition and for sustainable urban planning and development of the rapidly expanding Mymensingh city. Extensive field work has been completed to get the realistic scenario, data and samples have been collected from surface and subsurface with auguring and geotechnical boring. The laboratory tests have been performed following standard laboratory procedures. Geomorphologically the area is broadly classified into Older Floodplain or Mymensingh Terrace and Younger Floodplain. These two flood plains are separated by Old Brahmaputra River. Geologically the area is mainly covered by the recent alluvial flood plain deposits which are underlain by the Pleistocene Madhupur clay deposits. The Younger Flood Plain deposit consists of mainly unconsolidated fine to medium sands with some silt and clay whereas the Older Flood Plain deposits are mainly consisting of silty clay and fine to medium sand. Moderately compacted sediments of older flood plain deposit are suitable for urban development. Based on geotechnical characteristics and the N values (blow counts of Spontaneous Penetration Test, SPT) of the subsurface sediments, the study area is classified into four Engineering Geological Units. Unit I indicates loose soil and is suitable for shallow foundation. Unit II is indicating compact soil packing;N value of these two units increase with depth and would be good for heavy foundation. Unit III is suitable for shallow structures. Unit IV, which is composed of mostly clay, silty clay and sand with highly compressive organic clay, is recommended to avoid any heavy construction and could be used as open place, water retaining zone etc. Beside the geological and engineering geological study details hydrology and hydrogeological and a systematic study on seismic hazards are strongly recommended before planning of urban area.

Oxidase Enzyme Activities and Their Correlations with Antioxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome in Bangladesh

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a range of conditions associated with decreased blood flow in the coronary arteries resulting from sudden rupture of atherosclerotic plaques. Several studies have found that oxidative stress is involved in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. The role of oxidase enzymes and antioxidative stress biomarkers in these processes needs further attention. In this study, a total of 120 participants were enrolled which comprised 60 ACS patients and 60 control subjects. The major oxidase enzyme, xanthine oxidase, which plays a pivotal role in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), showed significantly higher activities in both serum (158.03 ± 43.30 mU/mL) and red blood cells (RBC) lysate (309.07 ± 75.73 mU/mL) of the ACS patients compared to controls, 48.51 ± 13.41 mU/mL and 184.10 ± 70.14 mU/mL, respectively. The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase and myeloperoxidase, both of which are major contributors to ROS production, showed significantly higher activities in patients (14.13 ± 3.38 U/L and 10.9 ± 3.3 U/mg) than in controls, 6.90 ± 1.94 U/L and 5.9 ± 1.5 U/mg, respectively. Ceruloplasmin, an emerging biomarker of inflammation, showed significantly higher activity in patients (83.8 ± 26.2 U/L) compared to controls, 70.0 ± 18.9 U/L. The antioxidant enzyme glutathione reductase showed significantly lower activity in patients than controls, 60.7 ± 47.8 U/mL/min and 85.2 ± 49.5 U/mL/min, respectively. Evaluation of cardioprotective biomarkers nitric oxide and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) showed significantly lower values in patients. Correlation analyses between these parameters further corroborated increased oxidative stress in patients. These findings suggest that excessive productions of ROS by the oxidase enzymes cause an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of oxidants leading to increased oxidative stress in patients with ACS.

Comparison of Positions of QTLs Conferring Resistance to Xanthomonas campestrispv. campestrisin Brassica oleracea

Black rot, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is possibly the most important disease of Brassica worldwide. To compare chromosomal positions of Xcc resistance loci in Brassica oleracea between the present and published studies and to develop marker assisted selection (MAS) to resistance against Xcc race 1, we constructed a B. oleracea map, including pW, pX and BoCL markers that were closely linked to previously reported Xcc resistance QTLs. We also analyzed Xcc resistance QTLs by improving our previously reported map derived from the cross of a susceptible double-haploid line (GC P09) with a resistant double-haploid line (Reiho P01). In the nine linkage groups obtained (C1-C9), the major QTL, XccBo(Reiho)2, was derived from Reiho with a maximum LOD score (7.7) in C8. The QTL (LOD 4.4) located in C9, XccBo(GC)1 was derived from the susceptible GC. The other QTL (LOD 4.4), XccBo(Reiho)1, was found in C5. Based on common markers, it was possible to compare our finding Xcc resistance QTLs with the B. oleraceaXcc loci reported by previous authors;XccBo(Reiho)1 and XccBo(GC)1 may be identical to the Xcc resistance QTLs reported previously or a different member contained in the same resistance gene cluster. Our map includes public SSR markers linked to Xcc resistance genes that will promote pyramiding Xcc resistance genes in B. oleracea. The present study will also contribute to a better understanding of genetic control of Xcc resistance.

南海北部陆架和陆坡区小型底栖动物群落的比较研究

为了解南海北部陆架与陆坡区小型底栖动物的群落特征,以及影响群落特征的环境因素,2015年6月对南海北部海域(19.3°—21.4°N, 112.4°—115.1°E)7个站位的小型底栖动物及环境因子进行了采样,并对陆架和陆坡区小型底栖动物群落的丰度、生物量、类群组成和群落结构进行比较。结果表明,在陆架站位,小型底栖动物由13个类群组成,平均丰度为(132±130)ind./10cm^2,平均生物量为(169±79)μgdwt/10cm^2;在陆坡站位由8个类群组成,平均丰度为(33±14)ind./10cm^2,平均生物量为(56±35)μgdwt/10cm^2。单因素方差分析结果表明,陆坡区小型底栖动物的总丰度和总生物量以及线虫和多毛类的丰度均显著低于陆架区,但优势类群的相对丰度组成没有显著不同,海洋线虫占总丰度的83%,其次为多毛类和桡足类,分别占7%和3%。环境因子的主成分分析(Principal ComponentsAnalysis,PCA)将陆架和陆坡站位沿第一主分量轴分开,小型底栖生物丰度和生物量与沉积物叶绿素a和脱镁叶绿酸含量以及底层水温呈最大正相关,与水深呈负相关;聚类(Cluster)和排序(non-metric Multidimensional Scaling, mdS),以相似性系数65%将7个站位划分为2组,与按照水深划分的陆架和陆坡组基本吻合;单因素相似性分析(one-way ANOSIM)显示陆架和陆坡区小型底栖动物群落结构差异显著;生物-环境分析(Biota-Environment,BIOENV)表明影响群落结构的最佳环境因子组合为叶绿素a和底层水温。综上可知,随水深增加的食物减少和底层水温的下降是限制南海北部研究海域小型底栖动物丰度和生物量及影响群落组成和结构的主要因素。

Correlation of p53 over-expression and alteration in p53 gene detected by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism in adenocarcinoma of gastric cancer patients from India

AIM： To study the alterations in p53 gene among Indian gastric cancer patients and to correlate them with the various clinicopathological parameters. METHODS： A total of 103 gastric cancer patients were included in this study. The p53 alterations were studied by both immunohistochemical method as well as polymerase chain reaction （PCR）-single strand conformation polymorphism （SSCP） analysis. We only studied four （exon 5, 6, 7, and 8） of the 11 ,p53 exons. The alterations in p53 were also correlated with respect to various clinicopathological parameters. RESULTS： Among 103 cases, p53 over-expression and alteration were detected in 37 （35.92%） and 19 （18.44%） cases, respectively. Most of the ,p53 alterations were found at exon 5 （31.54%）, followed by exon 6 （26.31%）, exon 7 （21.04%） and exon 8 （21.04%）. A significant correlation of p53 overexpression was found with p53 alteration （P = 0.000）. Concordance between ,p53 alteration （as detected by SSCP） and over-expression [as detected by immunohistochemistry （IHC）] was found in 75% cases. We found that IHC-positive/SSCP-negative cases accounted for 21% of cases and IHC-negative/SSCP- positive cases accounted for remaining 4% cases. CONCLUSION： Our results show that p53 gene mutations are significantly correlated with p53 protein over-expression, with 75% concordance in over-expression and alteration in the p53 gene, but 25% disconcordance also cautions against the assumption that p53 over-expression is always associated with a gene mutation. There may be other mechanisms responsible for stabilization and accumulation of p53 protein with no evidence of gene mutation that reflect an accumulation of a non-mutated protein, or a false negative SSCP result.

Effect of Environmental Conditions on Tin (Sn) Whisker Growth

This research focuses on tin whisker growth under two different environmental conditions namely hygrothermal and a salt solution. Tin coated brass coupons were used for this study to analyze the growth of tin whiskers over time. Their growth rates were examined periodically using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The physical characteristics of the tin whiskers were identified for each environmental condition. It was discovered that submersion of tin coated brass substrates in 5% salt solution considerably increased the density (number of whiskers per unit area), and the length of the whiskers. In addition, it was found that the geometry and aspect ratio of tin whiskers were different for each environment.

Biological Evaluation of New Schiff Bases: Synthesized from 4-Amino-3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole, Phenathroline and Bipyridine Dicarboxaldehydes

Four new Schiff bases with promising anticancer activity have been synthesized from 4-amino-3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole and di-pyridyl-aldehydes. Structures have been established by various spectroscopic methods. The compounds were tested in vitro to study their cytotoxicity and anti-oxidative activity in human lung carcinoma (A549), breast carcinoma (BT549), prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3) and mouse preadipocytes (3T3-L1) cells. Compound 1 was found to increase Glutathione (GSH) level slightly in all four cell lines. Compound 4 showed better selectivity and cytotoxicity against both BT549 and A549 cells compared to the anticancer drug tamoxifen. With the exception of compound 4 which reduced GSH levels in A549 and BT549, all other compounds maintained GSH levels in comparison to their respective controls.

This paper draws attention to the prospects of sea-based economy to promote Bangladesh in a middle-income country through the sustainable use of marine resources. About three-fourths of the earth is covered by the seas. It plays the vital role in two important functions from ancient time known as the means of communication and the source of huge living and non-living natural resources. At present, the countries are becoming very much concerned about their marine resources to resolve many of the present and future challenges of their economies. Generally for Bangladesh, ocean is contributing a significant role to its overall socio-economic progress through rising up the economic activities across the country and especially to the coastal zone at southern part. This paper investigates how much Bangladesh is capable to take of or handle the challenges to become a middle income country through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, it has attempted with a closer-look to find out the barriers or limitations of these activities from different angles if exist.

Biological investigations of medicinal plants of Heliotropium indicum indigenous to Bangladesh

Objective:To investigate the clot lysis,antimicrobic and membrane stabilizing potentials of ethanolic extractives of the leaves of Heliotropium indicum(***).Methods:Crude ethanolic extracts of *** leaves were partitioned successively using solvents of different polarity and subjected to determine qualitatively and quantitatively for the presence of different bioactive constitutes and fractions which were assessed for their possible clot lysis,antimicrobic,and membrane stabilizing activities as compared with the known ***:For the thrombolytic activity,the petroleum ether soluble fraction showed the highest percent of clot lysis(35.4%)among all fractions,while streptokinase and water resulted in 65.15%and 3.77%clot lysis,*** respect to the membrane stabilizing activity,carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of *** profoundly interdicted the hemolysis of erythrocytes brought about by osmotic induction(39.24%)or by heat(40.20%).The other fractions exhibited less significant membrane stabilizing *** contrast,acetylsalicylic acid resulted in 72.25%±0.30%inhibition of osmotically induced hemolysis and showed a lower level of protection of heat induced hemolysis(42.56%).Crude ethanolic extracts were moderately sensitive against known pathogenic *** pharmacological activities of *** are due to the presence of bioactive compounds,we detected and quantified the presence of significant levels of flavonoid and tannin ***:The outcomes of this research show that the leaves of *** have the potential to be used as a remedy for thrombosis,inflammatory diseases and against few important bacterial pathogens.

Corduroy yarn is generally introduced in a fabric structure of garments due to developing different designs in terms of appearance of fabric which is called corduroy garment. In this study, both corduroy and denim garments have been made to develop a denim-like wash effect on corduroy garments that will create a new fashion, value addition and sustainability in washing technology. Both the garments are treated with the same washing process. Also, some physical properties have been investigated for both washed garments such as Washing Effect Test, Tear Strength Test, GSM Test, and Rubbing Test. Then a comparative study has been done on both washed garments. The appearance of washed corduroy garments is satisfactory. The physical properties also show a better result. Finally, a satisfactory result is achieved from this work.
