Inherited photorec.ptor degeneration in humans c.nstitutes a major c.use of irreversible blindness in the *** c.mprise various diseases,but retinitis pigmentosa is the most frequently *** pigmentosa is c.mmonly limited to the eye,where there is progressive photorec.ptor degeneration,rods and sec.ndarily *** mec.anisms of c.ne and rod degeneration c.ntinue to be investigated,sinc. most of the mutations c.using retinitis pigmentosa affec. rods and thus,the sec.ndary death of c.nes is an intriguing question but,ultimately,the c.use of *** the mec.anisms of rod and c.ne degeneration c.uld help us to develop therapies to stop or,at least,slow down the degeneration *** c.ne degeneration has been attributed to the trophic.dependenc. between rods and c.nes,but mic.oglial c.ll ac.ivation c.uld also have a *** this review,based on previous work c.rried out in our laboratory in early stages of photorec.ptor degeneration in two animal models of retinitis pigmentosa,we show that mic.oglial c.ll ac.ivation is observed prior to the the initiation of photorec.ptor *** also show that there is an inc.ease of the retinal mic.oglial c.ll densities and invasion of the outer retinal layers by mic.oglial *** inhibition of the mic.oglial c.lls improves photorec.ptor survival and morphology,doc.menting a role for mic.oglial c.lls in photorec.ptor ***,these results indic.te that the modulation of mic.oglial c.ll reac.ivity c.n be used to prevent or diminish photorec.ptor death in inherited photorec.ptor degenerations.

Brazilian pre-salt reservoirs are renowned for their intric.te pore networks and vuggy nature,posing signific.nt c.allenges in modeling and simulating fluid flow within these c.rbonate *** possessing exc.llent petrophysic.l properties,suc. as high porosity and permeability,these reservoirs typic.lly exhibit a notably low rec.very fac.or,sometimes falling below 10%.Previous researc. has indic.ted that various enhanc.d oil rec.very(EOR)methods,suc. as water alternating gas(WAG),c.n substantially augment the rec.very fac.or in pre-salt reservoirs,resulting in improvements of up to 20%.Nevertheless,the fluid flow mec.anism within Brazilian c.rbonate reservoirs,c.arac.erized by c.mplex pore geometry,remains *** study examines the behavior of fluid flow in a similar heterogeneous porous material,utilizing a plug sample obtained from a vugular segment of a Brazilian stromatolite outc.op,known to share analogies with c.rtain pre-salt *** c.nduc.ed single-phase and multi-phase c.re flooding experiments,c.mplemented by medic.l-c. sc.nning,to generate flow streamlines and evaluate the effic.enc. of water ***,mic.o-c. sc.nning of the c.re sample was performed,and two c.oss-sec.ions from horizontal and vertic.l plates were *** c.oss-sec.ions were then employed as geometries in a numeric.l simulator,enabling us to investigate the impac. of pore geometry on fluid *** of the pore-sc.le modeling and experimental data unveiled that the presenc. of dead-end pores and vugs results in a signific.nt portion of the fluid remaining stagnant within these ***,the injec.ed fluid exhibits c.anneling-like behavior,leading to rapid breakthrough and low areal swept ***,the numeric.l simulation results demonstrated that,irrespec.ive of the size of the dead-end regions,the pressure variation within the dead-end vugs and pores is *** the stromatolite's favorable petrophysic.

This paper desc.ibes the design and fabric.tion of a range of ‘gas c.ll' mic.otargets produc.d by the Target Fabric.tion Group in the c.ntral Laser Fac.lity(c.F) for ac.demic.ac.ess experiments on the Orion laser fac.lity at the Atomic.Weapons Establishment(AWE). The experiments were c.rried out by an ac.demic.c.nsortium led by Imperial c.llege London. The underlying target methodology was an evolution of a range of targets used for experiments on radiative shoc.s and involved the fabric.tion of a prec.sion mac.ined c.ll c.ntaining a number of apertures for interac.ion foils or diagnostic.windows. The interior of the c.ll was gas-filled before laser irradiation. This paper details the assembly proc.sses, thin film requirements and mic.o-mac.ining proc.sses needed to produc. the targets. Also desc.ibed is the implementation of a gas-fill system to produc. targets that are filled to a pressure of 0.1–1 bar. The paper disc.sses the c.allenges that are posed by suc. a target.

Individual variations in the fat mass and obesity-assoc.ated (FTO) gene have been assoc.ated with obesity and BMI in diverse populations, but there are no reports in young Mexic.ns. We explored the assoc.ation of a c.mmon FTO single-nuc.eotide polymorphism (SNP, rs805704) with obesity-related phenotypes in Mexic.n young adults. The FTO-SNP was genotyped using the fluoresc.nt polarization method in c.llege-age, apparently healthy subjec.s from the “UP AMIGOS” c.hort (n = 251, 18 - 25 yrs). Homozygotes for the A allele (15%, n = 38) were heavier (1.6 kg/m2 and6.2 kg) and had a larger waist c.rc.mferenc. (Wc.4.8 c.) than G allele c.rriers. The FTO genotype was assoc.ated with BMI, weight and Wc.independently of age and sex and explained 2.7 to 3.1% of the varianc. in obesity-related phenotypes. The FTO genotype was also assoc.ated with fasting gluc.se (P = 0.0283). No other assoc.ations were found in the additive model. Despite our small sample size, we found that the FTO-rs805704 genotype influenc.s obesity-related phenotypes young Mexic.ns. Previously observed FTO assoc.ations with fasting gluc.se were replic.ted. Previously reported assoc.ations with other metabolic.traits likely represent the long-term c.nsequenc.s of obesity.

Exploring lanthanide doped materials and their high-pressure optic.l properties is important from the perspec.ive of designing pressure sensors, piezoelec.ric.materials, sc.ntillators, and optoelec.ronic.devic.s, just to mention a few. Understanding the high-pressure optic.l properties of polymeric.fibrous mats provides signific.nt advantages in terms of flexibility, tunability, fac.le proc.ssability, and malleability. In this work, we have developed flexible polyvinylidene difluoride(PVDF) fibrous mats doped with an Eu^(3+) sourc. of Eu(NO_(3))_(3)·5H_(2)O(EN-PF) or Eu_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)(ES-PF) by a Forc.spinning■ method. Mic.ostruc.ural analysis of these two systems indic.tes that Eu(NO_(3))_(3)·5H_(2)O and Eu_(2)(SO_(4))_(3) are homogeneously distributed and dispersed into the PVDF matrix. Fiber formation promotes a β-phase PVDF. Eu^(3+) doping inc.eases the β-phase. Its frac.ion is larger for the ES-PF mats. To understand their high-pressure optic.l properties, their photoluminesc.nc. spec.ra have been taken at various pressures up to 58 GPa in a diamond anvil c.ll. High-pressure luminesc.nc. illustrates a c.ear c.ange in asymmetry ratio, peak intensity, peak breadth, c.lor c.ordinate, and c.lor temperature of Eu^(3+) ions from both EN-PF and ES-PF with a different extent of c.anges. Spec.fic.lly, Eu^(3+) ions in the ES-PF mats switc. from asymmetric.to symmetric.environment as pressure inc.eases. Those in the EN-PF mats present symmetric.environment for all tested pressures. Both of the Eu^(3+) doped PVDF systems present irreversible c.anges. Therefore,the EN-PF fibrous mats present an opportunity to make pressure induc.d red-orange-yellow tunable phosphors for multifunc.ional applic.tions.

ISc.EMIA trial:How to apply the results to c.inic.l prac.ic.

During the last years two questions have been c.ntinuously asked in c.ronic.c.ronary syndromes:(1)Do revasc.larization proc.dures(c.ronary artery bypass grafting or perc.taneous c.ronary intervention)really improve symptoms of angina?and(2)Do these tec.niques improve outc.mes,*** they prevent new myoc.rdial infarc.ion events and c.rdiovasc.lar death?Therefore,there was a need for a large definitive *** study was the ISc.EMIA trial,a large,multic.ntric.trial sponsored by the National Heart,Lung,and Blood *** main trial c.mpared c.ronary revasc.larization and optimal medic.l treatment(OMT)vs OMT alone in 5179 patients enrolled after a stress *** a median 3.2-year follow-up,318 primary outc.me events oc.urred;the adjusted hazard ratio for the invasive strategy as c.mpared with the c.nservative strategy was 0.93(95%c.nfidenc. interval 0.80-1.08,P=0.34).The ISc.EMIA trial deeply disrupted many of our prior attitudes regarding management strategies for patients with stable c.ronary artery *** findings undersc.re the benefits of disease-modifying OMT for stable c.ronary artery disease *** main purposes of isc.emia assessment before this trial were:Diagnostic.purposes,assessment of outc.me,and adding to dec.sion-making ***,this c.anged after the trial *** results of ISc.EMIA might c.allenge the c.rrent diagnostic.approac. for stable angina patients rec.mmended in the last European Soc.ety of c.rdiology guidelines on c.ronic.c.ronary disease that were based on studies published before the ISc.EMIA *** this editorial we propose our approac. based on the ISc.EMIA study and the pretest probability for a positive test in patients with c.ronic.c.ronary syndromes.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are an unc.mmon group of tumors of mesenc.ymal origin. GIST of the anal c.nal is extremely rare. At present, only 10 c.ses of c.kit positive anal GIST have been reported in the literature. There is no widely ac.epted treatment approac. for this neoplasia. Literature is sparse on imaging evaluation of anal c.nal GIST, usually desc.ibed as a lesion in the intersphinc.eric.spac.. We desc.ibe the c.se of a 73-year-old man with a mass in the anal c.nal, and no other symptoms. Endoanal ultrasound and magnetic.resonanc. imaging showed a well c.rc.msc.ibed solid nodule in the intersphinc.eric.spac.. The patient was treated by loc.l exc.sion. Gross pathologic.l examination showed a 7 c. × 3.5 c. × 3 c. mass, and histologic.l examination showed a proliferation of spindle c.lls, with prominent nuc.ear palisading. The mitotic.c.unt was of 12 mitoses/50 HPF. The tumor was positive for KIT protein, c.34 and vimentin in the majority of c.lls, and negative for desmin and S100. A diagnosis of GIST, with high risk aggressive behavior was made. An abdomino-perineal resec.ion was disc.ssed, but refused. The follow-up inc.uded c.inic.l evaluation and anal ultrasound. After 5 years the patient is well, with maintained c.ntinenc. and no evidenc. of loc.l rec.rrenc..

Wind is among the most important environmental fac.ors shaping birds＇ migration patterns. Birds must deal with the displac.ment c.used by c.osswinds and their behavior c.n vary ac.ording to different fac.ors suc. as flight mode, migratory season, experienc., and distanc. to goal areas. Here we analyze the relationship between wind and migratory movements of three raptor spec.es whic. migrate by soaring-gliding flight： Egyptian vulture Neophron perc.opterus, booted eagle Aquila pennata, and short-toed snake eagle c.rc.etus gallic.s. We analyzed daily migratory segments （i.e., the path joining c.nsec.tive roosting loc.tions） using data rec.rded by GPS satellite telemetry. Daily movements of Egyptian vultures and booted eagles were signific.ntly affec.ed by tailwinds during both autumn and spring migrations. In c.ntrast, daily movements of short-toed eagles were only signific.ntly affec.ed by tailwinds during autumn migration. The effec. of c.osswinds was signifi- c.nt in all c.ses. Interestingly, Egyptian vultures and booted eagles showed latitudinal differenc.s in their behavior： both spec.es c.mpensated more frequently at the onset of autumn migration and, at the end of the season when reac.ing their wintering areas, the proportion of drift segments was higher. In c.ntrast, there was a higher drift at the onset of spring migration and a higher c.mpensation at the end. Our results highlight the effec. of wind patterns on the migratory routes of soaring raptors, with different outc.mes in relation to spec.es, season, and latitude, ultimately shaping the loop migration patterns that c.rrent trac.ing tec.niques are showing to be widespread in many long distanc. migrants.
