Anencephaly is a frequent and easily diagnosed condition affecting twin pregnancies with higher incidence than singletons. Discordance for anencephaly in twins raises management dilemmas about the best approach to the situation. The authors report a successful case of a 33 years old woman who had a dichorionic twin pregnancy resulting from ICSI, with discordance for anencephaly. Diagnosis was performed at 13 weeks during first trimester ultrasound screening. A selective feticide with intrathoracic injection of KCl at 13 + 2 weeks was performed with no complications. The normal fetus proceeded with an uneventful pregnancy with spontaneous vaginal delivery at 40 weeks, weighting 3110 g. Management of twin pregnancies discordant for fetal anencephaly is far from being consensual. Two options are considered: selective feticide or expectant management, with serial ultrasound surveillance. In the latter option, amniodrainage or selective feticide may become options if polyhydramnios develops later in pregnancy. Therapeutic strategy requires an individual approach considering chorionicity, gestational age and all the risks of miscarriage, preterm labor and fetal demise to which these pregnancies are particularly exposed.

Biodiversity Assessment of Sugar Beet Species and Its Wild Relatives:Linking Ecological Data with New Genetic Approaches

The value of crop wild relatives has long been acknowledged and this wild resource has been used to improve crop performance with clear economic benefits. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris) is the most economically valuable crop species in the order Caryophyllales, B. vulgaris subsp. maritima being the ancestor of the cultivated beets. The wild species of the genus Beta s.l. are commonly found in coastal areas of Europe and Mediterranean Region, where a rich genetic heritage still exists. Broadening the genetic base of sugar beet by introgression with wild relatives is a growing need regarding the maintenance of ecologically important traits. Since wild relatives have adapted to specific habitats, they constitute an important source of novel traits for the beet breeding pool. So, we conducted a broader research project aiming to delimit taxa and identify priority locations to establish genetic reserves of the wild Beta species occurring in Portugal (Western Iberian Peninsula). The aim of this study was: 1) to identify and characterize the main habitats of these wild Beta species;and 2) to present a review of some genetic tools available for future application in sugar beet breeding. In this review, we have focused on EcoTILLING as a molecular tool to assess DNA polymerphisms in wild populations of Beta and identify candidate genes related to drought and salt tolerance, as well as addressed some issues related to next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies as a new molecular tool to assess adaptive genetic variation on the wild relatives of sugar beet.

This study aimed to perform the taxonomic survey of the species of periphytic Cyanobacteria in a lentic tropical environment, seeking to contribute to the knowledge on biodiversity and their distribution. This study was conducted at the Samambaia Reservoir, which is located at Federal University of Goiás, Goiania, Central West region of Brazil. In general, the water of the Samambaia Reservoir is characterized as more turbid and the increased biochemical oxygen demand as well as a higher concentration of coliforms in the rainy season. Twenty six samples were collected, ten in the dry season (09/2010 and 11/2010;07/2012) and ten in the rainy season (01/2011 and 03/2011;01/2013). Periphyton was collected from stems of aquatic plants (Cyperaceae), which were in the marginal area of the reservoir. With the floristic survey, 38 taxa of Cyanobacteria were identified in periphyton of the Samambaia Reservoir. Phormidium (family Phormidiaceae) and Aphanocapsa (Merismopediaceae) are among genera with the highest species richness. Regarding morphological types, many species of filamentous cyanobacteria were identified, followed by colonial taxa. In relation to the frequency of occurrence and the seasonal period, 14 taxa were classified in the rare category, 12 in common category and 12 in constant category. Regarding the seasonal period, Cyanophyceae were the greatest wealth in the rainy season (97.4%).

Electrical energy consumption is growing and is necessary to improve the technologies related to energy production. We have carried out a pilot study about environmental impacts during the manufacturing process of PV （photovoltaic） modules and compared between the energy requirement for the production of PV cells and modules and generation throughout the life time of the finished good that is PV module. It was taken into account the generation of environmental aspects and impacts in the manufacture of monocrystalline silicon PV modules （consisting of three components： silicon cell, fiat tempered glass and aluminum frame）, and an analysis of a grid-connected PV system using an energetic alternative in residences was considered. Results show that, this kind of renewable energy is really clean and can be considered as a way to change the energy technology.

Study on Zymomonas Mobilis Growth and Its Relationship with Glutaminase Production by Using Statistical Tools

Glutaminase is used industrially to enhance flavor and aroma and to enrich foodstuffs nutritionally. It also has potential for pharmaceutical application as anti-leukemia agent. The bacteria of Zymomonas mobilis has been studied for ethanol production, however, there is no study regarding glutaminase production. The aim of the present study was to establish the influencing factors for the growth of Z mobilis and its relationship with glutaminase production using statistical tools. Analysis of variance in blocks was carried out in a complete block design and the Tukey test demonstrated the importance of the components of the culture medium, absence of agitation and fermentation time. Minimum culture medium was used in the optimization varying the glucose concentrations （10, 30, and 50 g/L）, glutamine （0, 0.5 and 1g/L） and culture time （18, 24 and 30 hours）. Maximum production was obtained at 8.86 U/L glutaminase. Optimized conditions were used in the growth kinetics, where typical exponential growth was observed. Glutaminase production was shown to be related to biomass production.
