Pyrolysis of WEEE plastics using catalysts produced from fly ash of coal gasification

Catalytic pyrolysis of thermoplastics extracted from waste electrical and electronic equipment （WEEE） was investigated using various fly ash-derived catalysts. The catalysts were prepared from fly ash by a simple method that basically includes a mechanical treatment followed by an acid or a basic activation. The synthesized catalysts were characterized using various analytical techniques. The results showed that not treated fly ash （FA） is characterized by good crystallinity, which in turn is lowered by mechanical and chemical treatment （fly ash after mechanical and acid activation, FAMA） and suppressed almost entirely down to let fly ash become completely amorphous （fly ash al^er mechanical and basic activation FAMB）. Simultaneously, the surface area resulted increased. Subsequently, FA, FAMB and FAMA were used in the pyrolysis of a WEEE plastic sample at 400~C and their performance were compared with thermal pyrolysis at the same temperature. The catalysts principally improve the light oil yield： from 59 wt.% with thermal pyrolysis to 83 wt.% using FAMB. The formation of styrene in the oil is also increased： from 243 mg/g with thermal pyrolysis to 453 mg/g using FAMB. As a result, FAMB proved to be the best catalyst, thus producing also the lowest and the highest amount of char and gas, respectively.

ON MODELING THE GROWTH DYNAMICS OF A STAGE STRUCTURED POPULATION

A Lagrangian modeling approach is applied to the numerical simulation of the temporal dynamics of a stage-structured population. The growth dynamics is determined only by the main biological processes： development of an individual, mortality, reproduction. Different approaches in modeling the development process of an individual are implemented： stochastic advection-diffusion models （backward-forward dispersion models）, and stochastic development models where regression effects, defined as negative development on the status of an individual, are forbidden （forward dispersion models）. Some properties of the residence times of an individual in a stage are investigated： in particular, their role in the calibration of the development models and in the estimation of some parameters introduced in the model equation. As a study case a multi-stage pelagic copepod population is considered. Trying to separate the effects of the main biological processes on the temporal dynamics, numerical simulations have been carried out in some idealized situations： first only the development of the individuals, neglecting mortality and reproduction, is considered; then the mortality process is introduced, and finally both the mortality and reproduction processes. The results of the numerical simulations, are compared and discussed.

Aggressive behaviour of solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas in adults:A case report and review of the literature

Solid-pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) is a rare neoplasm of the pancreas that usually occurs in young females. It is generally considered a low-grade malignant tumor that can remain asymptomatic for several years. The occurrence of infiltrating varieties of SPT is around 10%-15%. Between 1986 and 2006, 282 cystic tumors of the pancreas were observed. Among them a SPT was diagnosed in 8 patients (2.8%) with only one infiltrating variety. This was diagnosed in a 49-year-old female 13 years after the sonographic evidence of a small pancreatic cystic lesion interpreted as a pseudocyst. The tumor invaded a long segment of the portal- mesenteric vein confluence, and was removed with a total pancreatectomy, resection of the portal vein and reconstruction with the internal jugular vein. Histological examination confirmed the R-0 resection of the primary SPT, although a vascular invasion was demonstrated. The postoperative course was uneventful, but 32 mo after surgery the patient experienced diffuse liver metastases. Chemotherapy with different drugs was started. The patient is alive and symptom-free, with stable disease, 75 mo after surgery. Twenty-five patients with invasion of the portal vein and/or of mesenteric vessels were retrieved from the literature, 16 recent patients with tumor relapse after potentially curative resection were also retrieved. The best treatment remains a radical resection whenever possible, even in locally advanced or metastatic disease. The role of chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy, is still to be defined.

Testicular parenchymal abnormalities in Klinefelter syndrome： a question of cancer？ Examination of 40 consecutive patients

Klinefelter syndrome （KS） is a hypergonadotropic hypogonadism characterized by a 47, XXY karyotype. The risk of testicular cancer in KS is of interest in relation to theories about testicular cancer etiology generally; nevertheless it seems to be low. We evaluated the need for imaging and serum tumor markers for testicular cancer screening in KS. Participants were 40 consecutive KSpatients, enrolled from December 2009 to January 2013. Lactate dehydrogenase （LDH）, alpha-fetoprotein （AFP）, and beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin subunit （^-HCG） serum levels assays and testicular ultrasound （US） with color Doppler, were carried out at study entry, after 6 months and every year for 3 years. Abdominal magnetic resonance （MR） was performed in KS when testicular US showed micro-calcifications, testicular nodules and cysts. Nearly 62% of the KS had regular testicular echotexture, 37.5% showed an irregular echotexture and 17.5% had micro-calcifications and cysts. Eighty seven percent of KS had a regular vascular pattern, 12.5% varicocele, 12.5% nodules 〈1 cm, but none had nodules 〉1 cm. MR ruled out the diagnosis of cancer in all KS with testicular micro calcifications, nodules and cysts. No significant variations in LDH, AFP, and ^-HCG levels and in US pattern have been detected during follow-up. We compared serum tumor markers and US pattern between KS with and without cryptorchidism and no statistical differences were found. We did not find testicular cancer in KS, and testicular US, tumor markers and MR were, in selected cases, useful tools for correctly discriminating benign from malignant lesions.

Statistical evaluation of fluoride contamination in groundwater resources of Santiago del Estero Province, Argentina

This study investigates the suitability of statistical techniques for evaluating the fluoride content and the groundwater quality from Robles Department(RD)and Banda Department(BD)in Santiago del Estero(Argentina).For the original statistical study,evaluation of nine parameters(fluoride,pH,conductivity,atmospheric and water temperature,total dissolved solids,chloride,hardness,and alkalinity)of 110 collected underground water samples from 23 dispersed rural areas was *** samples were obtained by sampling taken from wells at different *** levels were determined by a standard colorimetric method in two seasonal periods,the dry(from April to September)and rainy(from October to March)*** analytical results obtained for physicochemical parameters such as pH,total dissolved solids(TDS),and temperature does not reveal any notable difference between the rainy and dry seasons *** both seasons,the atmospheric temperature average was 22℃.With respect to fluoride content,approximately 50%of the analysed groundwater samples exceeded the limit established by current legislation(1.0 mg/L),obtaining concentration levels in the range of 0.01-2.80 mg/*** study demonstrates the usefulness of the univariate statistical method(quartiles calculation,interquartile range IQR),multivariate principal component analysis(PCA),and cluster analysis to establish a better understanding of the state of the contamination of the waters in the region studied.

Kinetics of Treated Domestic Sewage Disinfection through Catalytic Oxidation with H2O2

The inactivation of bacterial cells through catalyzed oxidation using hydrogen peroxide as the primary oxidant agent is dependent on a series of factors, such as the concentration of the catalyst, the rate of hydroxyl radical formation in the controlled decomposition of the oxidant agent, and the concentration and toxicity of hydrogen peroxide. The objective of this study was to develop a mathematical model able to predict the kinetics of the inactivation Escherichia coli and total coliforms cells present in treated domestic sewage through catalytic peroxidation. The catalyst used was iron oxide supported on mineral coal （called CP）, and the effects of the operational conditions, including hydrogen peroxide concentration and dosage of catalyst, were evaluated. The results showed that the disinfection kinetics of the treated domestic sewage is dependent on the concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and catalyst dosage. The kinetic model was shown to be able to predict the behavior of the inactivation kinetics of the bacterium Escherichia coli ATCC-25922 when different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide （75 and 100 mg·L^-1） were used, regardless of the catalyst dosage.

目的目前对患有基础心脏病的住院患儿中发生心跳骤停者的特点及预后几无所知。本研究旨在阐述心脏病患儿中单次或反复发生心跳骤停者的临床特点及院内预后。场所美国心脏病协会复苏指南执行登记处(2000-2010)。对象发生1次或以上院内心跳骤停, 且患有内科或外科心脏疾病的18岁以下患儿。干预措施无。研究设计回顾性分析单次及反复发生心跳骤停患儿校正及未校正时的临床特点及预后。测量方法和主要结果 157家中心1 889例患儿符合纳入标准, 共发生心跳骤停2 387次;1 546(82%)例患儿发生单次心跳骤停, 343(18%)例患儿发生反复心跳骤停。超过2/3的反复心跳骤停发生于重症监护室, 反复心跳骤停患儿基础合并症发生率较高(可能接受机械通气及输注血管活性药)。出院时总体存活率51%, 反复心跳骤停组低于单次组(41% vs.53%, P<0.001)。校正基础合并症后, 反复心跳骤停与存活率无相关性(OR=0.74, 95%CI 0.33-1.63, P=0.45)。分层分析显示, 外科心脏病患儿中反复心跳骤停与低生存率的相关性(OR=0.39, 95%CI 0.14-1.11, P=0.09)较内科心脏病患儿(OR=0.96, 95%CI 0.28-3.30, P=0.95)更为显著。结论本次大型多中心研究显示, 半数发生心跳骤停的心脏病患儿出院时存活。反复心跳骤停患儿存活率较低可能与此类患儿基础合并症发生率较高部分相关, 心脏外科患儿发生基础合并症风险最高。需开展进一步研究制定相关策略, 以降低此类高风险患儿病死率。
