Oxidative stress has been implicated as one of.the causes in cell death in many neurodegenerative disorders. Due to antioxidative properties in vitro, the use of.f.avonoids and other polyphenolic compounds synthesised by plants are considered to be a promising strategy to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinsons’s disease. In the present study, we tested protective ef.ects of.some polyphenols and sodium pyruvate on 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), salsolinol and 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK) induced neurotoxicity in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. We f.und that luteolin prevented f.om 6-OHDA and 3-HK induced cell viability reduction and that one of.the mechanisms involved in the neuroprotective process was the ability to increase the level of.cellular ATP. However, luteolin was inef.ective against salsolinol-induced toxicity. Neither pre-treatment with f.avonoids nor simultaneous addition had any protective ef.ects on 6-OHDA, salsolinol or 3-HK induced neurotoxicity. Interestingly, both pre-treatment and co-treatment with pyruvate provided protection against 6-OHDA, salsolinol or 3-HK induced toxicity. Moreover, luteolin and sodium pyruvate, administered together, acted additively, so to achieve the same ef.ect, lower concentrations were needed. The ability of.luteolin and sodium pyruvate to reduce toxicity of.6-OHDA and 3-HK in SH-SY5Y cells may be related to two dif.erent neuroprotective mechanisms and the capability to penetrate into the cell.

A novel test rig f.r the investigation of.radiative heat transf.r in packed beds has been developed and is introduced with representative experimental *** individual components and the calibration are *** generic packed bed is realized in a simplif.ed way by an arrangement of.parallel rods,which represent particles in *** this arrangement,electrically heated rods provide the radiation propagating through the rod array to heat the passive counterparts.A sophisticated temperature-control scheme with a large number of.thermocouples and inf.ared-imaging provides in-depth inf.rmation about heat transf.r in the *** radiation intensities are determined with a f.urier-transf.rm inf.ared spectroscopy,which has been modif.ed and validated f.r this specif.c *** order to compare the inf.uence of.dif.erent surf.ce properties of.particles on the heat propagation and surf.ce ref.ections,rod samples made of.stainless steel and magnesium oxide are *** inf.uence of.material properties becomes clearly visible by comparing the high radiation intensities resulting f.om a stainless steel rod array to the same geometry built f.om magnesium oxide *** addition,the inf.uence of.the surf.ce properties is particularly evident in the inf.ared images since the ref.ections are signif.cantly higher f.r the stainless steel samples than f.r the magnesium oxide *** experimental results in the current work demonstrate the ability of.the test rig to provide data with a well-def.ned accuracy as a validation base f.r numerical radiation simulations in packed beds.

Heat transf.r plays a major role in many industrial processes taking place in packed *** accurate and reliable simulation of.the heat exchange between particles is theref.re crucial f.r a reliable operation and to optimize the processes in the *** discrete ordinates method(DOM)provides an established numerical technique to model radiative heat transf.r in granular media that of.ers the possibility to consider the directional dependence of.the radiation *** this work,DOM is compared with Monte Carlo ray tracing,which provides an alternative method f.r heat transf.r ***-rically simple conf.gurations are used to investigate the inf.uence of.the angular discretization on the accuracy of.the results and the computation time in both *** obtained insights are then transf.rred to a more complex conf.guration of.a quasi two-dimensional test rig consisting of.metal rods f.r which also experimental results are *** results show that both DOM and Monte Carlo ray tracing allow f.r an accurate simulation of.heat transf.r in packed *** Carlo ray tracing requires thereby computation times that are surprisingly competitive(although still somewhat slower)compared to DOM and allows f.r an easier computation of.highly accurate ref.rence *** our preliminary comparison to the experimental test rig,Monte Carlo ray tracing also provides the advantage that it can more easily model highly specular materials such as stainless *** methods are comparable f.r dif.use materials such as magnesium oxide.

The emergence of.severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)in 2019 prompted scientif.c,medical,and biotech communities to investigate inf.ction-and vaccine-induced immune responses in the context of.this pathogen.B-cell and antibody responses are at the center of.these investigations,as neutralizing antibodies(nAbs)are an important correlate of.protection(COP)f.om inf.ction and the primary target of.SARS-CoV-2 vaccine *** addition to absolute levels,nAb longevity,neutralization breadth,immunoglobulin isotype and subtype composition,and presence at mucosal sites have become important topics f.r scientists and health policy *** recent pandemic was and still is a unique setting in which to study de novo and memory B-cell(MBC)and antibody responses in the dynamic interplay of.inf.ction-and vaccine-induced *** also provided an opportunity to explore new vaccine platf.rms,such as mRNA or adenoviral vector vaccines,in unprecedented cohort *** with the technological advances of.recent years,this situation has provided detailed mechanistic insights into the development of.B-cell and antibody responses but also revealed some unexpected *** this review,we summarize the key f.ndings of.the last 2.5 years regarding inf.ction-and vaccine-induced B-cell immunity,which we believe are of.signif.cant value not only in the context of.SARS-CoV-2 but also f.r f.ture vaccination approaches in endemic and pandemic settings.

Background Many cancer patients seek adjunctive therapies to biomedical cancer treatments at some point of.their disease *** acupuncture is increasingly recommended by leading oncological associations,limited evidence exists concerning the evidence-inf.rmed practice and adherence to current guidelines of.traditional complementary and integrative medicine(TCIM)practitioners treating cancer *** An international online-survey assessed the demographical data,clinical practice,and sources of.inf.rmation used by TCIM practitioners in Austria,Germany,United States of.America,Australia,and New *** In total,404 respondents completed the survey,of.which 254(62.9%)treated cancer *** practitioners were acupuncturists and herbalists(57.1%),had(16.8±9.9)years of.clinical experience and see a median of.2(1,4)cancer patients per *** cancer(61.8%)is the most common cancer type seen in TCIM *** TCIM treatments are f.equently concurrent with the patient’s cancer specif.c treatment(39.9%),which is also ref.ected by the main goal of.a TCIM treatment to alleviate side ef.ects(52.4%).However,only 28.0%of.the respondents are in contact with the treating *** to the respondents,pain is most ef.ectively treated using acupuncture,while herbal medicine is best f.r cancer-related *** practitioners mostly use certif.ed courses(33.1%)or online databases(28.3%)but of.en believe that experts are more reliable to inf.rm their practice(37.0%)than research publications(32.7%).Conclusion Acupuncturists and herbalists commonly treat cancer *** practitioners use TCIM as an adjunct to biomedicine as supportive care and use it largely in accordance with current oncological guidelines.

Background:Liver transplantation(LT)f.r neuroendocrine liver metastases(NELM)is still in *** comparing LT with liver resection(LR)f.r NELM are scarce,as patient selection is heterogeneous and experience is *** goal of.this review was to provide a critical analysis of.the evidence on LT versus LR in the treatment of.*** sources:A scoping literature search on LT and LR f.r NELM was perf.rmed with PubMed,including English articles up to March ***:International guidelines recommend LR f.r NELM in resectable,well-dif.erentiated tumors in the absence of.extrahepatic metastatic disease with superior results of.LR compared to systemic or liver-directed *** liver surgery has extended resectability criteria whilst entailing increased perioperative risk and short disease-f.ee *** highly selected patients(based on the Milan criteria)with unresectable NELM,oncologic results of.LT are *** f.ctors include tumor biology(G1/G2)and burden,waiting time f.r LT,patient age and extrahepatic *** on low-level evi-dence,LT f.r low-grade NELM within the Milan criteria resulted in improved disease-f.ee survival and overall survival compared to *** benef.ts of.LT were lost in patients beyond the Milan ***:With adherence to strict selection criteria especially tumor biology,LT f.r NELM is becoming a valuable option providing oncologic benef.ts compared to *** evidence suggests even stricter selection criteria with regard to tumor biology.
