A High-Order Conservative Semi-Lagrangian Solver for 3D Free Surface Flows with Sediment Transport on Voronoi Meshes

In this paper,we present a conservative semi-Lagrangian scheme designed for the numeri-cal solution of 3D hydrostatic free surface flows involving sediment transport on unstruc-tured Voronoi meshes.A high-order reconstruction procedure is employed for obtaining a piecewise polynomial representation of the velocity field and sediment concentration within each control *** is subsequently exploited for the numerical integration of the Lagrangian trajectories needed for the discretization of the nonlinear convective and viscous *** presented method is fully conservative by construction,since the transported quantity or the vector field is integrated for each cell over the deformed vol-ume obtained at the foot of the characteristics that arises from all the vertexes defining the computational *** semi-Lagrangian approach allows the numerical scheme to be unconditionally stable for what concerns the advection part of the governing ***,a semi-implicit discretization permits to relax the time step restriction due to the acoustic impedance,hence yielding a stability condition which depends only on the explicit discretization of the viscous terms.A decoupled approach is then employed for the hydrostatic fluid solver and the transport of suspended sediment,which is assumed to be *** accuracy and the robustness of the resulting conservative semi-Lagrangian scheme are assessed through a suite of test cases and compared against the analytical solu-tion whenever is *** new numerical scheme can reach up to fourth order of accu-racy on general orthogonal meshes composed by Voronoi polygons.

mirNAs in precancerous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract

In spite of the well-established understanding of the phenotypic lesions occurring in the shift from native epithelia to invasive （adeno） carcinoma, the molecular b/ping of the precancerous changes in the gastrointes- tinal tract remains unreliable. In recent years, no biomarkers have aroused as much interest as the mirNAs, a class of non-coding rNA molecules that function as endogenous silencers of numerous target genes. Aberrant mirNA expression is a hallmark of human disease, including cancer. Unlike most mrNAs, mirNAs are both long-living in vivo and very stable in vitro. Such charac- teristics allow their testing in paraffin-embedded tissue samples, which is essential in the biological profiling of small （phenotypically characterized） preneoplastic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract （as well as in other fields of human pathology）. The upcoming challenge lies in the reliable identification of disease-specific targets of dysregulated mirNAs, to enable mirNA testing in the clinical management of the secondary prevention of gastrointestinal cancer.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment（VA） tools for forest ecosystems and forest-dependent communities are important for making decisions and understanding the impact of climate change on both social and natural ***,the tools are poorly coordinated,making it difficult for policymakers to carry out VAs *** aim of this study was to analyze VA literature worldwide to find representative case studies in terms of methods and tools applied and which have been successful in performing VAs on forests and forest-dependent *** successful VA studies analyzed had common characteristics such as significant funding,data availability and technical *** additional characteristic was the development of an integrated approach that considered the vulnerability of both ecosystems and communities by combining qualitative and quantitative *** members and relevant stakeholders were significantly involved in a participatory process that concluded with the identification of adaptation *** case studies also revealed how policymakers need to choose suitable methods and tools to undertake efficient assessment of *** need to consider several aspects of the VA process such as subject matter,availability of resources,time and scale.

Inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus by the synergistic action of charged and reactive plasma particles

In this paper,a low-pressure capacitively coupled plasma discharge sustained in an argonoxygen mixture was studied in order to evaluate its properties in terms of inactivation of Staphylococcus *** plasma parameters as electron temperature and plasma density were measured by the Langmuir probe(Ne≈1015 m^-3,Te≈1.5 eV),while the neutral atom density was in the range of 1021 m^-*** the plasma phase,oxygen radicals were taken as reference of the reactive species with antimicrobial activity,and oxygen spectral lines,over a range of plasma process parameters,were investigated by the optical emission *** plasma conditions were found,and a count reduction of 4 log in a few minutes of the bacterium proves the potentiality of an industrial grade plasma reactor as a sterilization agent.

Pin-on-disc study of dry sliding behavior of Co-free HVOFcoated disc tested against different friction materials

The dry sliding behavior of three commercial friction materials(codenamed FM1,FM2,and FM3)tested against a Co‐free cermet coating produced by high‐velocity oxy‐fuel(HVOF)on gray cast‐iron discs is ***1 is a conventional low‐metallic friction material,FM2 is developed for using against HVOF‐coated discs,and FM3 is a Cu‐free friction material with a low content of abrasives and a relatively high concentration of steel *** the tribological evaluation,they are tested on a pin‐on‐disc(PoD)test rig against Co‐free HVOF‐coated discs,with particular attention to the running‐in stage,which is fundamental for the establishment of a friction layer between the two mating surfaces,i.e.,the pin and *** PoD tests are performed at room temperature(rT)and a high temperature(HT)of 300℃.At rT,all materials exhibit a long running‐in *** HT,no running‐in is observed in FM1 and FM2,whereas a shorter running‐in period,with respect to the rT case,is observed in FM3 followed by the attainment of a comparatively high coefficient of *** rT,the pin wear is mild in all cases but severe at ***3 shows the lowest wear rate at both ***,the coated disc shows no wear when sliding against the FM3 friction *** the results are interpreted considering the microstructural characteristics of the friction layers formed on the sliding *** findings of the present study provide insights into reducing wear in braking system components and hence reducing environmental particulate matter emissions from their wear,through the use of disc coatings.

Prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma on cirrhosis: Is it necessary?

AIM: To assess the safety and effectiveness of prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in a large population of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on ***: Two hundred and twenty nine consecutive cirrhotic patients with HCC who underwent hepatic resection were retrospectively evaluated to assess whether there was any difference in the incidence of thrombotic or hemorrhagic complications between those who received and those who did not receive prophylaxis with low-molecular weight *** and possible effects of the following parameters were investigated: age,sex,Child-Pugh and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score,platelet count,presence of esophageal varices,type of hepatic resection,duration of surgery,intraoperative transfusion of blood and fresh frozen plasma (FFP),body mass index,diabetes and previous cardiovascular ***: One hundred and fifty seven of 229 (68.5%) patients received antithromboembolic prophylaxis (group A) while the remaining 72 (31.5%) patients did not (group B).Patients in group B had higher Child-Pugh and MELD scores,lower platelet counts,a higher prevalence of esophageal varices and higher requirements for intraoperative transfusion of *** incidence of VTE and postoperative hemorrhage was 0.63% and 3.18% in group A and 1.38% and 1.38% in group B,respectively;these differences were not *** of the variables analyzed including prophylaxis proved to be risk factors for VTE,and only the presence of esophageal varices was associated with an increased risk of ***: Prophylaxis is safe in cirrhotic patients without esophageal varices;the real need for prophylaxis should be better assessed.

Adaptive stray-light compensation in dynamic multi-projection mapping

Projection-based mixed reality is an effective tool to create immersive visualizations on real-world objects. Its wide range of applications includes art installations, education, stage shows, and advertising. In this work, we enhance a multi-projector system for dynamic projection mapping by handling various physical stray-light effects: interreflection,projector black-level, and environmental light in real time for dynamic scenes. We show how all these effects can be efficiently simulated and accounted for at runtime, resulting in significantly improved projection mapping results. By adding a global optimization step,we can further increase the dynamic range of the projection.
