“Bull’s eye”appearance of hepatocellular adenomas in patients with glycogen storage disease type I-atypical magnetic resonance imaging findings:Two case reports

BACKGROUND Hepatocellular adenomas are rare tumors that can occur in patients with glycogen storage disease type *** SUMMARY We herein report two cases of histologically proven hepatocellular adenomas in patients with glycogen storage disease type *** resonance imaging(MRI)was performed after bolus injection of gadoxetate disodium,a liver-specific gadolinium-based MRI contrast *** the present cases,some of the hepatocellular adenomas showed unexpectedly a“bull’s eye”appearance on T2-weighted and post-contrast images,which was not previously described as imaging findings of hepatocellular adenomas in glycogen storage disease.A bull’s eye appearance on T2-weighted images can be encountered in both benign(i.e.,abscess)or malignant(i.e.,epithelioid hemangioendothelioma,cholangiocarcinoma,and metastases)hepatic *** We present two cases of hepatocellular adenomas in patients with glycogen storage disease type 1,in which gadoxetate disodium-MRI showed atypical imaging findings for hepatocellular *** present there is no systematic study evaluating MRI findings of hepatocellular adenomas in patients with glycogen storage disease,further studies are needed to specifically investigate this issue.

Impact of field strength and RF excitation on abdominal diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging

AIM:To retrospectively and prospectively compare diffusion-weighted(DW)images in the abdomen in a1.5T system and 3.0T systems with and without twochannel functionality for ***:DW images of the abdomen were obtained on 1.5T and 3.0T(with and without two-channel functionality for B1shimming)scanners on 150 patients(retrospective study population)and 10 volunteers(prospective study population).Eight regions were selected for clinical significance or artifact susceptibility(at higher field strengths).Objective grading quantified signal-to-noise ratio(SNR),and subjective evaluation qualified image quality,ghosting artifacts,anddiagnostic *** significance was calculated usingχ2tests(categorical variables)and independent two-sided t tests or Mann-Whitney U tests(continuous variables).RESULTS:The 3.0T using dual-source parallel transmit(dpTX 3.0T)provided the significantly highest SNRs in nearly all *** regions susceptible to artifacts at higher field strengths(left lobe of liver,head of pancreas),the SNR was better or similar to the 1.5T ***,both dpTX 3.0T and 1.5T systems provided higher image quality,diagnostic value,and less ghosting artifact(P<0.01,most values)compared to the 3.0T system without dual-source parallel transmit(non-dpTX 3.0T).CONCLUSION:The dpTX 3.0T scanner provided the highest *** image quality,lack of ghosting,and diagnostic value were equal to or outperformed most currently used systems.

Correlation analysis of dual-energy CT iodine maps with quantitative pulmonary perfusion MRI

AIM:To correlate dual-energy computed tomography(DECT) pulmonary angiography derived iodine maps with parameter maps of quantitative pulmonary perfusion magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).METHODS:Eighteen patients with pulmonary perfusion defects detected on DECT derived iodine maps were included in this prospective study and additionally underwent time-resolved contrast-enhanced pulmonary MRI [dynamic contrast enhanced(DCE)-MRI].DCE-MRI data were quantitatively analyzed using a pixel-by-pixel deconvolution analysis calculating regional pulmonary blood flow(PBF),pulmonary blood volume(PBV) and mean transit time(MTT) in visually normal lung parenchyma and perfusion *** parameterswere correlated to mean attenuation values of normal lung and perfusion defects on DECT iodine *** readers rated the concordance of perfusion defects in a visual analysis using a 5-point Likert-scale(1 = no correlation,5 = excellent correlation).RESULTS:In visually normal pulmonary tissue mean DECT and MRI values were:22.6 ± 8.3 Hounsfield units(HU);PBF:58.8 ± 36.0 mL/100 mL per minute;PBV:16.6 ± 8.5 mL;MTT:17.1 ± 10.3 *** areas with restricted perfusion mean DECT and MRI values were:4.0 ± 3.9 HU;PBF:10.3 ± 5.5 mL/100 mL per minute,PBV:5 ± 4 mL,MTT:21.6 ± 14.0 *** differences between visually normal parenchyma and areas of restricted perfusion were statistically significant for PBF,PBV and DECT(P < 0.0001).No linear correlation was found between MRI perfusion parameters and attenuation values of DECT iodine maps(PBF:r = 0.35,P = 0.15;PBV:r = 0.34,P = 0.16;MTT:r = 0.41,P = 0.08).Visual analysis revealed a moderate correlation between perfusion defects on DECT iodine maps and the parameter maps of DCE-MRI(mean score 3.6,k 0.45).CONCLUSION:There is a moderate visual but not statistically significant correlation between DECT iodine maps and perfusion parameter maps of DCE-MRI.

SURFACE MODIFICATION OF POLYPROPYLENE MICROPOROUS MEMBRANE BY TETHERING POLYPEPTIDES

Two kinds of polypeptides were tethered onto the surface of polypropylene microporous membrane （PPMM） through a ring opening polymerization of L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride initiated by amino groups which were introduced by ammonia plasma and y-aminopropyl triethanoxysilane treatments. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR/ATR）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, together with water contact angle measurements were used to characterize the modified membranes. XPS analyses and FT-IR/ATR spectra demonstrated that polypeptides are actually grafted onto the membrane surface. The wettability of the membrane surface increases at first and then decreases with the increase in grafting degrees of polypeptide. Platelet adhesion and murine macrophage attachment experiments reveal an enhanced hemocompatibility for the polypeptide modified PPMMs. All these results give evidence that polypeptide grafting can simultaneously improve the hemocompatibility as well as reserve the hydrophobicity for the membrane, which will provide a potential approach to improve the performance of polypropylene hollow fiber microporous membrane used in artificial oxygenator.

APPROXIMATING THE STATIONARY BELLMAN EQUATION BY HIERARCHICAL TENSOR PRODUCTS

We treat infinite horizon optimal control problems by solving the associated stationary Bellman equation numerically to compute the value function and an optimal feedback *** dynamical systems under consideration are spatial discretizations of non linear parabolic partial differential equations(PDE),which means that the Bellman equation suffers from the curse of *** non linearity is handled by the Policy Iteration algorithm,where the problem is reduced to a sequence of linear equations,which remain the computational bottleneck due to their high *** reformulate the linearized Bellman equations via the Koopman operator into an operator equation,that is solved using a minimal residual *** the Koopman operator we identify a preconditioner for operator equation,which deems essential in our numerical *** overcome computational infeasability we use low rank hierarchical tensor product approximation/tree-based tensor formats,in particular tensor trains(TT tensors)and multi-polynomials,together with high-dimensional quadrature,*** controlling a destabilized version of viscous Burgers and a diffusion equation with unstable reaction term numerical evidence is given.

Recruitment in species-rich grasslands: the effects of functional traits and propagule pressure

Aims The assembly of plant communities is a complex process which combines impacts from the species pool,dispersal and propagule pressure,niche requirements of colonizing species and the niche structure of the *** theory development has incorporated all these aspects,***‘stochastic niche theory’.We investigated recruitment into a species-rich grassland community,using an experimental approach where we manipulated the trait composition of the community and examined the success of colonizing species entering with various propagule ***,we examined two predictions:(i)colonization success increases with increasing difference between traits of the colonizing species and the trait profile of the community and(ii)colonization success increases with increasing propagule *** The examined communities were species-rich semi-natural grasslands located in southern *** a careful documentation of the composition of the plant communities at the experimental sites,we manipulated the trait profile of species-rich grassland plots based on the plant functional trait specific leaf area(SLA),which is correlated with several key life history *** addition to SLA,seed mass was also used to describe the trait profile of grassland *** of 12 plant species from the regional species pool,varying in SLA and seed mass,were sown into plots using four different levels of propagule *** was examined after 1 *** also planted juvenile‘plug plants’of the same species which allowed us to examine survivorship and growth beyond the seedling *** Findings Overall we found very limited evidence for relationships between the traits of the colonizing species and the trait profile of the community and for recruitment after sowing these relationships were contrary to the *** of plug plants after two seasons of growth was high irrespective of the trait profile of the community,but growth of plug

Mapping of Tonoplast Intrinsic Proteins in Maturing and Germinating Arabidopsis Seeds Reveals Dual Localization of Embryonic TIPS to the Tonoplast and Plasma Membrane

We have mapped the expression of the tonoplast intrinsic protein （TIP） gene family members in Arabidopsis seeds by fluorescent protein tagging of their genomic sequences and confocal microscopy. Three isoforms （TIP1;1, TIP2;1, and TIP2;2） have distinct patterns of expression in maternal tissues （outer integument and placento-chalazal region）. Two isoforms, TIP3;1 and the previously uncharacterized TIP3;2, are the only detectable TIPs in embryos during seed maturation and the early stages of seed germination. Throughout these developmental stages, both isoforms co-locate to the tono- plast of the protein storage vacuoles, but also appear to label the plasma membrane. Plasma membrane labeling is specific to TIP3;1 and TIP3;2, is independent of the position of the fluorescent protein tag, and appears to be specific to early seed maturation and early germination stages. We discuss these results in the context of the predicted distribution of aquaporins in Arabidopsis seeds.
