Effects of Salacia lehmbachii ethanol root bark extract on estrous cycle and sex hormones of female albino rats

objective:To evaluate the effect of Salacia lehmbachii (S. lehmbachii) ethanol root bark extract on estrous cycle and sex hormones in female rats. Methods: Forty-eight virgin rats with regular 4-day cycle were grouped into four and each group was further subdivided into 'a' and 'b' (n=6). Each group was orally treated for 28 days with 2 mL of distilled water (control), ethanol root bark extract ofS. lehmbachii in doses of 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg/body weight (groups 2, 3, 4, respectively). Estrous cycle was determined daily using the vaginal smear method. Rats in'a' subgroups were weighed and sacrificed on the 29th day, and blood was collected for serum generation which was used for hormonal assay and sex organs were removed and weighed. Rats in 'b' subgroups were discontinued from treatment for 2 weeks and the parameters above were ***:The mean length of estrous cycle and duration of diestrous of treated rats were prolonged dose dependently compared to control. The increase was significant (Pother estrous phases were shortened in the same pattern. Relative weights of sex organs were reduced significantly (Pose. Sex hormones levels were significantly (Pompared to control. The above changes reverted towards the control values two weeks post ***: Ethanol root bark extract ofS. lehmbachii (high doses) has antifertility effect in female rats as it prolongs the estrous and diestrous cycle, and reduces serum sex hormones levels. The observed alterations were reversible.

Characterization of the Nanoscale Microstructure of an Immersion Silver on Sputtered Copper

Silver has grown its attraction of the scientists in microelectronic field *** deposition of silver onto copper substrates by immersion method has been one of the keen topics. In this study, ethanol was used as the plating solution in which some chemicals were added. The silver deposits were characterized by a field emission scanning electron microscopy （FESEM）, an atom force microscope （AFM）, a transmission electron microscope （TEM） and a selected area electron diffraction （SAED）. It was found that silver immersion using ethanol-based bath has good coverage feature. The highlands of the copper substrate are coated by silver particles whose sizes are around 12 nm, but those sizes at low-lying lands are a little smaller.

Heat and Mass Transfers in a Two-Phase Stratified Turbulent Fluid Flow in a Geothermal Pipe with Chemical Reaction

This research focused on the study of heat and mass transfers in a two-phase stratified turbulent fluid flow in a geothermal pipe with chemical reaction. The derived non-linear partial differential equations governing the flow were solved using the Finite Difference Method. The effects of various physical parameters on the concentration, skin friction, heat, and mass transfers have been determined. Analysis of the results obtained indicated that the coefficient of skin friction decreased with an increase in Reynolds number and solutal Grasholf number, the rate of heat transfer increased with an increase in Eckert number, Prandtl number, and angle of inclination, and the rate of mass transfer increased with increase in Reynolds number, Chemical reaction parameter and angle of inclination. The findings would be useful to engineers in designing and maintaining geothermal pipelines more effectively.

Computational strategies have been employed to investigate the influence of the nature of monomers and cross-linker in order to design three dimensional imprinted polymers with selective recognition sites for L-phenylalanine benzyl ester(L-PABE)***,computational chemistry methods were applied to screen the molar quantity of functional monomers that interact with one mole of the template *** of the nature of functional monomer,cross-linker,and molar ratio were determined computationally using density functional calculations with B3LYP functional and generic 6-31G basis *** acid(MAA)and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate(EGDMA)were used as the functional monomer and crosslinking agent,respectively.L-PABE imprinted polymer layered on multiwalled carbon nanotube(MWCNT)and conventional bulk MIP were synthesised and characterized as *** investigate the influence of pre-organization of binding sites on the selectivity of L-PABE,respective non-imprinted polymers were also ***-MIPs and MIPs exhibited the highest adsorption capacity towards *** synthesized polymers revealed characteristic adsorption features and selectivity towards L-PABE in comparison with those of its enantiomer analogues.

General relativistic calculations for white dwarfs

The mass-radius relations for white dwarfs are investigated by solving the Newtonian as well as Tolman-oppenheimer-Volkoff （ToV） equations for hydrostatic equilibrium assuming the electron gas to be non-interacting. We find that the Newtonian limiting mass of 1.4562 M is modified to 1.4166 M in the general relativistic case for 4He （and 12 6C） white dwarfs. Using the same general relativistic treatment, the critical mass for 56 26Fe white dwarfs is obtained as 1.2230 M. In addition, departure from the ideal degenerate equation of state （EoS） is accounted for by considering Salpeter＇s EoS along with the ToV equation, yielding slightly lower values for the critical masses, namely 1.4081 M for 4He, 1.3916M for 12C and 1.1565M for 56 26Fe white dwarfs. We also compare the critical densities for gravitational instability with the neutronization threshold densities to find that 4 2He and 12 6C white dwarfs are stable against neutronization with the critical values of 1.4081 M and 1.3916 M, respectively. However, the critical masses for 16 8o, 20 10Ne, 24 12Mg, 28 14Si,32 16S and 56 26Fewhite dwarfs are 26Fe white lower due to neutronization. Corresponding to their central densities for neutronization thresholds, we obtain their maximum stable masses due to neutronization by solving the ToV equation coupled with the Salpeter EoS.

In vitro and in vivo cytochrome P450 3A enzyme inhibition by Aframomum melengueta and Dennettia tripetala extracts

objective: To evaluate the in vitro and in vivo inhibitory effects of two commonly used herbs, Aframomum melengueta(A. melengueta) and Dennettia tripetala(D. tripetala) on CYP 3A enzymes. Methods: In vitro inhibition of the enzymes were assessed with microsomes extracted from female albino rats using erythromycin-N-demethylation assay(EMND) method while their in vivo effects were measured by estimating simvastatin plasma concentrations in rats. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined using non-compartmental anaysis as implemented in Win Nonlin pharmacokinetic program. Results: EMND assay with intestinal microsomes indicated that aqueous extracts of D. tripetala and A. melengueta significantly(P oth 50 μg and 100 μg concentrations. Petroleum ether extract of D. tripetala and ethanol extracts of A. melengueta inhibited intestinal CYP3 A activity at 100 μg but not at 50 μg concentrations. All the extracts showed an in vitrodose dependent CYP 3A inhibition with liver microsomes. In vivo analysis showed that pretreatment with the extracts enhanced systemic absorption of simvastatin with reductions in metabolizing enzymes activity as indicated in significant increases in maximal concentration, area under curve, area under moment curve and mean resident time of simvastatin(P onclusions: Herbal preparations containing these plants' extracts should be used with caution especially in patients on CYP450 3A substrate medications.

Parenting preschoolers with autism: Socioeconomic influences on wellbeing and sense of competence

BACKGRoUND Previous research suggests that parents raising a child with autism experience higher levels of psychological distress than parents of typically developing children and parents of children with other developmental disorders. Little is known, however, about the intersection between the effects of socioeconomic status(SES) on the wellbeing and sense of parental competency of parents of preschoolers with autism and how it relates to child symptom *** To examine the relationship between their child's symptom severity, SES, as measured by neighbourhood advantage and occupational status, on the psychological wellbeing and perceived parenting competence among parents of preschoolers with *** Parents of 117 preschool-aged children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder(ASD), 107 mothers and 54 fathers, completed questionnaires about their child's symptoms of ASD and functioning, their own perceptions of their wellbeing and parental competence on entry to an early intervention program in Sydney, Australia. Parents also provided demographic information pertaining to their occupation, level of education attained and address(postcode). All children were also assessed for their severity of symptoms using the Autism Diagnostic observation Schedule. The Australian Socioeconomic Index of occupationalstatus as a measure of familial SES and the Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage as a measure of neighbourhood advantage were used to examine the impact of SES on parental sense of competence and *** Compared to normative populations, both mothers and fathers in our sample reported significantly higher levels of parenting sense of efficacy but lower levels of interest in the parenting role. Lithium ion conduction and ion-polymer interaction in poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) based electrolytes blended with different plasticizers

Poly（ethylene oxide）, poly（vinyl pyrrolidone）（PEo/PVP）, lithium perchlorate salt（Li Cl o4） and different plasticizer based, gel polymer electrolytes were prepared by the solvent casting technique. XRD results show that the crystallinity decreases with the addition of different plasticizers. Consequently, there is an enhancement in the amorphousity of the samples responsible for the process of ion transport. FTIR spectroscopy is used to characterize the structure of the polymer and confirms the complexation of plasticizer with host polymer matrix. The ionic conductivity has been calculated using the bulk impedance obtained through impedance spectroscopy. Among the various plasticizers, the ethylene carbonate（EC） based complex exhibits a maximum ionic conductivity value of the order of2.7279 10 4S cm 1. Thermal stability of the prepared electrolyte films shows that they can be used in batteries at elevated temperatures. PEo（72%）/PVP（8%）/Li Cl o4（8%）/EC（12%） has the maximum ionic conductivity value which is supported by the lowest optical band gap and lowest intensity in photoluminescence spectroscopy near 400–450 nm. Two and three dimensional topographic images of the sample having a maximum ionic conductivity show the presence of micropores.
