FAMILIAL DEGENERATION OF ThE CORNEA

1. Seven cases of the primary familial degeneration of the corneae are described.2. These seven cases fall into two distinct clinical groups: Three of them belong to the Groenouw’s type of the nodular degeneration, two of these are seen in two sisters. Four cases closely correspond to the Fleischer’s type, where the opacities are mostly in the form of little rings.3. Pathological examination of a trephined piece from one of the Greonouw’s type shows a transformation of the superficial lamellae of the cornea into homogeneous substance, probably hyaline.4. One of the cases reveals a disturbance of the thyroid gland with palpitation, acceleration of the pulse, and enlargement of the thyroid gland. Two of the cases show an early general deposition of fat at puberty.5. The pathogenicity of the disease may be due to a disturbance of the nurtrition resulting from a local upset of the metabolism of the cornea. Iptakalim alleviates rotenone-induced degeneration of Dopaminergic neurons through inhibiting microglia-mediated neuroinflammation

Inhibition of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation has been regarded as a prospective strategy for treating neurodegenerative disorders,such as Parkinson's disease(PD). In the present study,we demonstrated that systematic administration with iptakalim(IPT),an adenosine triphosphate(ATP)-sensitive potassium channel(K-ATP) opener,could alleviate rotenone-induced degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in rat substantia nigra along with the downregulation of microglial activation and mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-alpha) and cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2). In rat primary cultured microglia,pretreatment with IPT suppressed rotenone-induced microglial activation evidenced by inhibition of microglial amoeboid morphological alteration,declined expression of EDl(a marker for activated microglia),and decreased production of TNF-alpha and prostaglandin E2(PGE(2)). These inhibitory effects of IPT could be reversed by selective mitochondrial KATP(mitoKATP) channel blocker 5-hydroxydecanoate(5-hD). Furthermore,pretreatment with IPT prevented rotenone-induced mitochondrial membrane potential loss and p38/c-jun N-terminal kinase(JNK) mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK) activation in microglia,which might in turn regulate microglial activation and subsequent production of TNF-alpha and PGE(2). These data strongly suggest that the K-ATP opener IPT may be a novel and promising neuroprotective drug via inhibiting microgliamediated neuroinflammation.

Enhanced intracellular calcium induced by urocortin is involved in degranulation of rat lung mast cells

Corticotropin-releasing factor(CRF), which activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis under stress, also has proinflammatory peripheral effects possibly through mast cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of urocortin (UCN), a 40-amino-acid CRF family peptide, on degranulation and intracellular calcium of rat lung mast cells. The activation and degranulation of mast cells were observed by Toluidine blue staining and transmission electron microscope. The intracellular calcium was investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy and flow cytometry. The results indicated that all the three different concentrations of UCN(0.1, 1 and 10 mu M) significantly induced the activation and degranulation of rat lung mast cells in vitro. This effect was markedly blocked by selective CRF receptor 1(CRF-R1) antagonist antalarmin, but not by specific CRF receptor 2(CRF-R2) antagonist antisauvagine-30(anti-Svg-30). The results also showed that UCN caused a rapid peak increase inCa2+(i) at point of 300s after UCN treatment, followed by a decrease to a sustained plateau phase. The peak increase inCa2+(i) induced by UCN was significantly inhibited by antalarmin, but not by anti-Svg-30. This effect of UCN onCa2+(i) in rat lung mast cells was also found by flow cytometry. Regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between mast cells degranulation extent and the maximum value ofCa2+(i)(P her, our present study suggested that UCN induced the increase of Ca2+(i) and degranulation of rat lung mast cells through CRF-R1. These findings may have implications for the pathophysiology of allergic and inflammatory lung disorders such as asthma, which is closely associated with mast cell activation and degranulation. Aging and the primary cosmetic nasal surgery

Purpose: The main goal of this article is to review the literature of general health and nasal anatomical-physiological profile of the elderly, prior to considering them as a candidate for primary cosmetic rhinoplasty (PCR). Rhinoplasty is the cosmetic nose’s surgical alteration. Materials and Methods: We extracted the information from internet search engines and the End Note software version X7. Criteria were applied to the most appropriate clinical messages related to the elderly. We focused on their general health status and their nasal anatomicalphysiological considerations prior to consider them for undergoing PCR. Research links were mostly from the Pub med and the medline databases. Results: the literature review showed that as people age, their health status and anatomical-physiological components of their nose alter. Their nasal anatomical supports get weaker, and their nasal internal and external physiology undergoes modifications. Functions related to the nasal supports, normal physiology of smell, airway passage, humidification mechanism and their general appearances are affected by age. Conclusion: Cosmetic surgeons must be aware of the aforementioned changes of the patients’ past and present health. Considering performing a complete systemic evaluation and the nasal anatomical-physical examination to assess the degrees of alterations, are crucial pre-operatively.

Background The receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 （ROR2） gene has been recently shown to play important roles in palatal development in animal models and resides in the chromosomal region linked to non syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate in *** aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between ROR2 gene and non-syndromic oral *** here we tested 38 eligible single-nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） in ROR2 gene in 297 non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate and in 82 non-syndromic cleft palate case parent trios recruited from Asia and *** Based Association Test was used to test for deviation from Mendelian *** software was used to test potential parent of origin *** maternally mediated in utero effects were assessed using the TRlad Multi-Marker approach under an assumption of mating symmetry in the *** Significant evidence of linkage and association was shown for 3 SNPs （rs7858435,rs10820914 and rs3905385） among 57 Asian non-syndromic cleft palate trios in Family Based Association Tests.P values for these 3 SNPs equaled to 0.000068,0.000115 and 0.000464 respectively which were all less than the significance level （0.05/38=0.0013） adjusted by strict Bonferroni *** odds ratios for the risk allele were 3.42 （1.80-6.50）,3.45 （1.75-6.67） and 2.94 （1.56-5.56）,*** evidence of linkage and association was not shown for study groups other than non-syndromic cleft *** evidence for parent-of-origin nor maternal genotypic effect was shown for any of the ROR2 markers in our analysis for all study *** Our results provided evidence of linkage and association between the ROR2 gene and a gene controlling risk to non-syndromic cleft palate.

Social health insurance and drug spending a mong cancer inpatients in China

A social health insurance(ShI) program has been established in China to ensure that people can obtain health care economically and equitably. Our analysis indicates that in 2005-06, 66.5 percent of Chinese citizens were non-ShI inpatients. We also found that drug spending for ShI inpatients was significantly higher than that for non-ShI inpatients. After adjusting for other variables, we found that the ShI coverage was also associated positively with higher drug costs. We present evidence to show that drug spending differences are attributable at least in part to differences in insurance courage.

Mechanistic Classification of Cement Treated Base in Western Australia

In the past decade alone, the BITRE has indicated an increase of 40% in road users, escalating demands for quality pavements to service tmprecedented traffic conditions. An abundance of crushed rocks are available in Western Australia but do not meet strength requirements for road construction. however, cement treatment of crushed rocks, forming Cement Treated Crushed Rocks （CTCR）, improves the mechanical properties of the material, allowing wider application. In order to streamline the mix design of CTCR, the classification of its behaviour is pivotal. Austroad classifies cement treated pavement materials as either being modified or bound based on its Unconfined Compressive Strength （UCS） and performance attributes. Bound materials are def＇med by its susceptibility to fatigue failure which, in the mechanistic-empirical design for flexible pavements, is dictated by the flexural modulus. however, in the study of damage mechanics, fatigue life is suggested to be an accumulation of micro-scale damage in lieu of dependency to ultimate stresses. Strain dependent damage functions are used phenomologically to explain the evolution of fatigue for various engineering materials. This paper therefore investigates a theoretical relationship between strain and fatigue life prediction supported by a laboratory investigation on the use of UCS for classification. This is achieved by providing regression analysis with strain parameters used in fatigue life prediction. The Indirect Tensile Strength （ITS） test is also employed to this end. It is observed that strain at onset of micro-cracking coalescence （ε30） is independent of test type undertaken and potentially capable of acting as a more superior blanket classification for cemented materials.
