A combination of tides and nontidal variations in ocean bottom pressure may generate interannual slip fluctuations in the transition zone along a subduction plate interface

The tidal triggering of earthquakes has been studied for many years.The discovery of slow earthquakes in the early 2000s,including slow slip,has urged scientists to investigate the tidal responses of these earthquakes due to their sensitivity to weak stress perturbations.Previous studies have shown that slow earthquakes correlate with diurnal and semidiurnal tides and seasonal variations in surface loads more clearly than ordinary earthquakes.However,little is known about long-term responses to external stresses.In this paper,based on a widely accepted frictional law for faults,a mechanism is proposed by which nontidal variations in ocean bottom pressure,when combined with tides,pro mote the occurrence of slow earthquakes.Because slow earthquakes accompany a slip on the plate interface,this mechanism allows one to estimate slip modulations.A one-degree-of-freedom slip model is constructed and applied to Ise Bay in the Tonankai region of southwestern Japan,where large-scale ocean mass redistributions have occurred.The model calculated with parameters determined from the observation of tectonic tremors is quantitatively consistent with the slip during 1997-2013 inferred from GNSS data,suggesting that the decrease in the sea-level change in approximately 2006 could cause the accele ration of a slip observed after that.This result implies that the decreases in sea level in approximately 1996 and 2014 could also cause subsequent slip accelerations.These three slip acceleration periods temporally coincide with the increases in background seismicity in a shallower portion of the plate interface.These changes in seismicity are common to shallow earthquakes in the Tokai area,and a similar model can reproduce them.Further studies are expected to reveal causality between shallow earthquakes and long-term slip fluctuations based on modeling that considers changes in the frictional property along the plate interface.

Thermal stability of the Cr-coated zirconium alloy microstructure prepared by pulsed laser deposition

Cr-coated zirconium alloy was prepared by pulsed laser deposition(PLD)for the application of accident-tolerant fuel cladding in light water reactors.The microstructural characteristics of the Cr coating and its evolution with temperature were investigated using grazing incidence X-ray diff raction and in situ heating transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Results show that the microstructure of the laser-deposited Cr coatings consists mainly of fine and non-specific shaped nano-crystals in the inner layer and columnar crystals in the outer layer.The recrystallization of the Cr-coating layer starts at 300–400℃ to release the high strain introduced by PLD,and the grain coalescence starts at temperatures>400°C.Upon annealing,the(110)-texture gradually intensifi es because of its high reticular density and low close-packed energy.Additionally,in situ heating TEM observation shows the presence of cavities on the Cr–Zr interface,which may result from the interdiff usion and/or the transformation from amorphous to crystalline.

Data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking:a survey

The blast furnace is a highly energy-intensive,highly polluting,and extremely complex reactor in the ironmaking process.Soft sensors are a key technology for predicting molten iron quality indices reﬂecting blast furnace energy consumption and operation stability,and play an important role in saving energy,reducing emissions,improving product quality,and producing economic benefits.With the advancement of the Internet of Things,big data,and artificial intelligence,data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking processes have attracted increasing attention from researchers,but there has been no systematic review of the data-driven soft sensors in the blast furnace ironmaking process.This review covers the state-of-the-art studies of data-driven soft sensors technologies in the blast furnace ironmaking process.Specifically,wefirst conduct a comprehensive overview of various data-driven soft sensor modeling methods(multiscale methods,adaptive methods,deep learning,etc.)used in blast furnace ironmaking.Second,the important applications of data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking(silicon content,molten iron temperature,gas utilization rate,etc.)are classified.Finally,the potential challenges and future development trends of data-driven soft sensors in blast furnace ironmaking applications are discussed,including digital twin,multi-source data fusion,and carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

A Series of Soluble Planar Oligorylenes up to Hexarylene

Preparation of large rylenes often needs the use of solubilizing groups along the rylene backbone,which results in the distortion of the skeleton and thus broadening of the absorption spectrum.In this work,we successfully synthesized 2,5,8,16,19,22-hexakis[2,6-bis(tri-fluoromethyl)phenyl]hexarylene(H)by using an oxidative fusion reaction of perylene trimer in 5%yield.The product is soluble in common organic solvents and could be purified with column chromatography.Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the hexarylene core is not disturbed by the substituents very much and is almost planar.The longest absorption of H exhibits a sharp peak at 831 nm and an on-set at 875 nm in toluene with a small full-width-at-half-maximum(FWHM)of 660 cm^(-1).The molar extinction coefficient is as large as 131,000 M^(-1)cm^(-1).The substituents could not perturb the electronic properties of the hexarylene because aryl groups are perpendicular to the hexarylene core and the carbon atoms at 2,5,16,19-positions have negligible coeffi-cients on its HOMO and LUMO,estimated by theoretical calculations.As a result,the hexarylene having less absorption at the visible light region was stable enough in solution under the LED room light for more than 1 week.This strategy gives a useful guideline to establish the near-infrared materials that exhibit stability under ambient conditions.

中国美术学院博物馆位于中国美院杭州象山校区，坐落在一片曾经的茶场上。为了与大地融为一体，创造出能够感受大地的博物馆，沿着山坡的倾斜地面进行了连续的设计。通过以平行四边形为单位的几何分割系统，进行了复杂地形的规划，并通过为每个单位建造小屋顶，形成了连续的瓦屋顶的“村庄”景观。外墙上覆盖着一道“屏风”，由不锈钢丝外挂瓷砖构成，有助于控制进入房间的阳光。屏风和屋顶的旧瓷砖都来自本地烧的瓦。瓦片尺寸的变化使建筑更好地与大地融合。

The role of protein phosphorylation in the regulation of class switch recombination

Antibody is an important part of adaptive immune system and is produced only by B cells.There are five main classes(IgM,IgD,IgG,IgA,IgE)and some subclasses in antibodies.IgM and IgD are produced by mature naïve B cells.On the other hand,IgG,IgA and IgE are produced by activated antigen-specific B cells via class switch recombination(CSR).CSR is the irreversible DNA rearrangement from upstream to downstream classes in immunoglobulin heavy chain genes.Co-stimulations of CD40 ligand(CD40L)and cytokines are required for induction of CSR by activating several transcription factors.These signal transduction pathways involve many protein phosphorylation.Phosphorylation or dephosphorylation of cellular protein is an important kind of post-translational protein modification in intracellular signal transduction.In the fact,more than one third of the intracellular proteins are said to be transiently phosphorylated in human.A protein kinase is an enzyme that catalyzes the addition of phosphate to substrate protein.Whereas,a protein phosphatase catalyzes the removal of phosphate from the substrate.This review focuses on the mechanism of CSR controlled by protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation.We provide the role of protein kinase and phosphatase in the regulation of class switch recombination.

Kinematically Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty for Valgus Osteoarthritis of More than 10°―Is It Still a “Challenging Surgery”?

Mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for valgus knee is considered a “challenging surgery.” Recently, the kinematic alignment (KA) method has gained attention. This study aimed to present objective clinical data, such as intraoperative balance assessment and radiographic evaluation of postoperative lower extremity alignment after TKA using the KA method for valgus deformity. Twenty-one TKA knees (mean age, 74 years;2 males, 19 females) with KA for severe valgus deformity (hip-knee-ankle-angle ≥ 10°) performed at our department in the past 3 years were included in this study. Intraoperative gap and balance measurements and postoperative radiographic evaluation were performed. A total arc of range of motion was achieved up to 98% of preoperative values at 3 weeks postoperatively. Intraoperative gap and balance were stable throughout the entire range of motion. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences in either balance or gap values at each flexion angle. KA TKA is a “simple surgery” rather than a “challenging surgery” because additional soft tissue procedures are not required, operative time is short, intraoperative and postoperative balance is very stable, and a good alignment is achieved. This procedure may relieve surgeons of the stress of TKA for valgus deformities.

Application of DEM modified with enlarged particle model to simulation of bead motion in a bead mill

We applied the discrete element method （DEM） of simulation modified by an enlarged particle model to simulate bead motion in a large bead mill. The stainless-steel bead mill has inner diameter of 102 mm and mill length of 198 mm. The bead diameter and filling ratio were fixed respectively at 0.5 mm and 85%. The agitator rotational speed was changed from 1863 to 3261 rpm. The bead motion was monitored experimentally using a high-speed video camera through a transparent mill body. For the simulation, enlarged particle sizes were set as 3-6 mm in diameter. With the DEM modified by the enlarged particle model, the motion of enlarged particles in a mill was simulated.The velocity data of the simulated enlarged particles were compared with those obtained in the experiment. The simulated velocity of the enlarged particles depends on the virtual frictional coefficient in the DEM model. The optimized value of the virtual frictional coefficient can be determined by considering the accumulated mean value. Results show that the velocity of the enlarged particles simulated increases with an increase in the optimum virtual frictional coefficient, but the simulated velocity agrees well with that determined experimentally by optimizing the virtual frictional coefficient in the simulation. The computing time in the simulation decreases with increased particle size.
