Direct Synthesis of Graphene on Silicon at Low Temperature for Schottky Junction Solar Cells

Graphene thin films synthesized directly at low temperature (550˚C) on silicon substrate by microwave (MW) surface wave plasma (SWP) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using the cover on substrates for avoiding plasma emission ultraviolet ray’s effect during film deposition. Analytical methods such as Raman spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), four-point probe method, and JASCO V-570 UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer were employed to characterize the properties of the graphene films. Here, we report that it is possible to grow graphene directly on the silicon substrate (without using catalyst) due to the high radical density of MW SWP CVD. Furthermore, we fabricated graphene/silicon Schottky junction solar cells with an efficiency of up to 6.39%. Compared to conventional silicon solar cells, the fabrication process is greatly simplified;just graphene is synthesized directly on n-type crystalline Si substrate at low temperate.

MK615 decreases RAGE expression and inhibits TAGE-induced proliferation in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

This paper reports the effects of iodine (Ⅰ) doping on the optical, structural and photovoltaic properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) thin-films grown on silicon and quartz substrates by microwave surface wave plasma chemical vapor deposition at low temperature (<100°C). For film deposition, Ar and CH4 were used as plasma source gases. The undoped and I-doped (post deposition doping) films were characterized by UV/VIS/NIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and current-voltage measurements. The optical band gap of the undoped film (3.4 eV) dropped to 0.9 eV after I-doping. The XPS results confirmed the successful doping of I in the a-C film. The Raman results indicated I-induced graphitization in the doped-film. The photovoltaic measurements show that the open-circuit voltage (V) and short-circuit current density (J) of I-doped a-C film deposited on n-type silicon substrate under light illumination (AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm) were approximately 177 mV and 1.15μA respectively and the fill factor was found to be 0.217. The use of a-C in photovoltaic solar cells is still in its infancy due to complicated microstructure of carbon bondings, high defect density, low photoconductivity and difficulties in controlling conduction type. Further research is underway to realize cheap, reasonably high efficiency and environmental friendly a-C based solar cells.

AIM To investigate the factors influenced the efficacy of tolvaptan(TLV) in liver *** We retrospectively enrolled 61 consecutive patients with refractory hepatic ascites. All of them had been treated with furosemide and spironolactone before admission, and treated with TLV for 7 d in our hospital. The effect of TLV was defined by the rate of body weight loss, and the factors that influenced TLV efficacy were analyzed using multiple *** Coexistent hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) was the only significant predictive variable that attenuated the efficacy of TLV. In stratified analysis, high doses of furosemide decreased the efficacy of TLV in patients with HCC, and increased efficacy in those without HCC. In the latter, a high Child-Pugh-Turcotte score had a positive influence and a high concentration of lactate dehydrogenase had a negative influence on the effectiveness of *** Development of ascites may differ between patients with liver failure and those with HCC progression. A sufficient preceding dose of furosemide decreases diuretic effect of TLV.

Positron emission tomography(PET) with ^(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) is a diagnostic tool to evaluate metabolic activity by measuring accumulation of FDG, an analogue of glucose, and has been widely used for detecting small tumors, monitoring treatment response and predicting patients' prognosis in a variety of cancers. However, the molecular mechanism of FDG accumulation into tumors remains to be investigated. It is well-known that most cancers are metabolically active with elevated glucose metabolism, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. The underlying mechanisms for elevated glucose metabolism in cancer tissues are complex. Recent reports have indicated the potential of FDG-PET/CT scans in predicting mutational status(e.g., KRAS gene mutation) of colorectal cancer(CRC), which suggests that FDG-PET/CT scans may play a key role in determining therapeutic strategies by non-invasively predicting treatment response to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) therapy. In this review, we summarize the current findings investigating the molecular mechanism of ^(18)F-FDG accumulation in CRC.

Green tea catechin, (–)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate [(–)-EGCG], was found to increase osteogenic functioning in mesenchymal stem cells. This study qualified EGCG, the strongest inhibitory efficiency for receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) ligand (RANKL)-activated osteoclastogenesis among other green tea catechins for RAW264, a murine preosteoclast cell line. Moreover, EGCG inhibited tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive multinucleated cell formation dose dependently in both single culture and co-culture systems, the expression of transcription factor, nuclear factor of activated T-cells, cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1) and some osteoclastic genes. Especially, EGCG exhibited a strong inhibitory effect on the expression levels of RANK, the receptor of RANKL, and OSCAR, a key co-stimulator of the RANKL/RANK signal. Simultaneously, apoptotic genes expression and Hoechst staining revealed that EGCG induced apoptosis in RAW264. Taken together, these data suggest that the inhibitory effect of EGCG to osteoclastogenesis is associated with a down regulation of RANKL/RANK signal, and increased apoptosis of preosteoclasts.

Self-bursting microcapsules, which retain their shape when suspended in water but burst quickly after the water evaporates, were proposed in a previous report. In this report, the effect of core materials on the bursting mechanism was studied. Five kinds of solvents were used as core materials, microencapsulated with polyurethane via an interfacial polymerization method. It was found that the self-bursting ratio was proportional to the measured dielectric constant of the core material. Thus, the solvents with a higher dielectric constant had an effect on the wall material to a greater extent. Furthermore, the self-bursting ratio was able to be predicted using the “organic conceptual diagram.”

The aim of this study is to investigate the condition of the Ariake Sea, Japan, which has been suffering from severe environmental issues for the past few decades. Water quality data have been generated from several points in this area for over 30 years by the Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, and Nagasaki prefectures. In order to understand the characteristics of this sea, principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized using 11 water quality parameters;transparency, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3--N), nitrite-nitrogen (NO2--N), phosphate-phosphorus, (PO43--P) and silica. PCA conveyed the amount of nutrients originating from the river, the organic pollution level, and seasonal changes. Subsequently, principal component scores were calculated for each point. It was concluded that the Ariake Sea environment has been affected by two main factors, which are the nutrients from the Chikugo River and anticlockwise tidal residual flow. These two factors must be considered for the environmental restoration of the Ariake Sea.
