Gonad traits and age structure of the sea urchin Heliocidaris crassispina in central range:a comparison with rangeextenders

The sea urchin Heliocidaris crassispina has northern expanded in geographic range to Toga Bay,Oga Peninsula in the Sea of Japan due to the global *** demonstrate the gonad traits and age structure of *** in the central range and compare the difference with those in northern extended range,we collected 100 *** individuals from a barren off Shitsumi,Fukui(central range),in August *** growth,gonad traits(size,development and color),and sex ratio were investigated and compared with those in Toga Bay,in August 2014(extended range).The successive 2012–2016 year classes of *** indicated successive juvenile recruitment in the central range,as found in the extended *** individuals at three years old in central range were obviously larger than those in the extended range,showing large test diameter and body weight,possibly due to the higher temperature in central range than that in northern extended *** addition,a balanced sex ratio in the central range was found,in contrast to the female-skewed sex ratio found in the extended *** development was sex-and *** testicular development in the central range was not only delayed in comparison to ovarian development,but also less delayed than those in the extended range,which possibly attribute to the higher water temperature in the central range.A significantly lower male gonad index and L*(lightness)value was recorded in central ranges compared to that in extended range,possibly due to the releasement of sperm of *** in central ranges.

Fabrication of Silver Nanowire Transparent Electrodes at Room Temperature

Silver nanowires （AgNWs） surrounded by insulating poly（vinylpyrrolidone） have been synthesized by a polyol process and employed as transparent electrodes. The AgNW transparent electrodes can be fabricated by heattreatment at about 200 ℃ which forms connecting junctions between AgNWs. Such a heating process is, however, one of the drawbacks of the fabrication of AgNW electrodes on heat-sensitive substrates. Here it has been demonstrated that the electrical conductivity of AgNW electrodes can be improved by mechanical pressing at 25 MPa for 5 s at room temperature. This simple process results in a low sheet resistance of 8.6 Ω/square and a transparency of 80.0%, equivalent to the properties of the AgNW electrodes heated at 200 ℃. This technique makes it possible to fabricate AgNW transparent electrodes on heat-sensitive substrates. The AgNW electrodes on poly（ethylene terephthalate） films exhibited high stability of their electrical conductivities against the repeated bending test. In addition, the surface roughness of the pressed AgNW electrodes is one-third of that of the heat-treated electrode because the AgNW junctions are mechanically compressed. As a result, an organic solar cell fabricated on the pressed AgNW electrodes exhibited a power conversion as much as those fabricated on indium tin oxide electrodes. These findings enable continuous roll-to-roll processing at room temperature, resulting in relatively simple, inexpensive, and scalable processing that is suitable for forthcoming technologies such as organic solar cells, flexible displays, and touch screens.

NAREGI is a 5-year Japanese National Grid Project during 2003--2007, whose chief aim is to develop a set of grid middleware to serve as a basis for future e-Science. NAREGI also aims to lead the way in standardization of grid middleware, based on the OGSA architecture. Its super-scheduler is based on the proposed OGSA-EMS Architecture, in that it becomes the first working implementation that implements the documented component relationships within the OGSA-EMS architecture document v.l.0. Through the efforts and experience in the design and implementation, it has been confirmed that the documented OGSA-EMS architecture is quite feasible, but will require significant amount of refinement and speed improvements to finalize its detailed specifications. The super-scheduler also supports co-allocation across multiple sites to support automated execution of grid-based MPIs that execute across machines. Such a resource allocation requires sophisticated interactions between the OGSA-EMS components not covered in the current OGSA-EMS architecture, some of which are non-trivial. Overall, job scheduling with OGSA-EMS has proven to not only work, but also that its job allocation and execution time is within reasonable bounds.

Cardiac biomarkers in children with congenital heart disease

Background:Most congenital heart diseases(CHDs)have specific hemodynamics,including volume and pressure overload,as well as cyanosis and pulmonary hypertension,associated with anatomical *** hemodynamic abnormalities can cause activation of neurohormones,inflammatory cytokines,fibroblasts,and vascular endothelial cells,which in turn contribute to the development of pathologic conditions such as cardiac hypertrophy,fi brosis,and cardiac cell damages and *** biomarker levels facilitates the prediction of these pathological changes,and provides information about the stress placed on the myocardial cells,the severity of the damage,the responses of neurohumoral factors,and the remodeling of the *** to the ample information on cardiac biomarkers in adult heart diseases,data from children with CHD are still *** sources:We reviewed cardiac biomarkers-specifi cally focusing on troponin as a biomarker of myocardial damage,amino-terminal procollagen type III peptide(PIIIP)as a biomarker of myocardialfi brosis and stromal remodeling,and B-type natriuretic peptide(BNP)/N-terminal proBNP as biomarkers of cardiac load and heart failure,by introducing relevant publications,including our own,on pediatric CHD patients as well as ***:Levels of highly sensitive troponin I are elevated in patients with atrial septal defects(ASDs)and ventricular septal defects(VSDs).PIIIP levels are also elevated in patients with ASD,VSD,pulmonary stenosis,and Tetralogy of *** of BNP and N-terminal proBNP levels shows good correlation with heart failure score in ***:In the treatment of children with CHD requiring delicate care,it is vital to know the specifi c degree of myocardial damage and severity of heart *** biomarkers are useful tools for ascertaining the condition of CHDs with ease and are likely to be useful in determining the appropriate care of pediatric cardiology patients.

A surface electromyography controlled steering assistance interface

Purpose–Two-handed automobile steering at low vehicle speeds may lead to reduced steering ability at large steering wheel angles and shoulder injury at high steering wheel rates(SWRs).As aﬁrst step toward solving these problems,this study aims,ﬁrstly,to design a surface electromyography(sEMG)controlled steering assistance interface that enables hands-free steering wheel rotation and,secondly,to validate the effect of this rotation on path-following ***/methodology/approach–A total of 24 drivers used biceps brachii sEMG signals to control the steering assistance interface at a maximized SWR in three driving simulator scenarios:U-turn,908 turn and 458 *** comparison,the scenarios were repeated with a slower SWR and a game steering wheel in place of the steering assistance *** path-following accuracy of the steering assistance interface would be validated if it was at least comparable to that of the game steering ***–Overall,the steering assistance interface with a maximized SWR was comparable to a game steering *** the U-turn,908 turn and 458 turn,the sEMG-based human–machine interface(HMI)had median lateral errors of 0.55,0.3 and 0.2 m,respectively,whereas the game steering wheel,respectively,had median lateral errors of 0.7,0.4 and 0.3 *** higher accuracy of the sEMG-based HMI was statistically signiﬁcant in the case of the ***/value–Although production automobiles do not use sEMG-based HMIs,and few studies have proposed sEMG controlled steering,the results of the current study warrant further development of a sEMG-based HMI for an actual automobile.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant disease and the severe nature of cases in men and women who develop colorectal cancer makes this an important socio-economic health issue. Major challenges such as understanding and modeling colorectal cancer pathways rely on our understanding of simple models such as outlined in this paper. We discuss that the development of novel standardized approaches of multidimensional (correlative) biomolecular microscopy methods facilitates the collection of (sub) cellular tissue information in the early onset of colorectal liver metastasis and that this approach will be crucial in designing new effective strategies for CRC treatment. The application of X-ray micro-computed tomography and its potential in correlative imaging of the liver vasculature will be discussed.

Disruption of the TWEAK/Fn14 pathway prevents 5-fluorouracil-induced diarrhea in mice

AIM To clarify the roles of TWEAK and its receptor Fn14 in 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)-induced *** Diarrhea was induced in wild-type(WT), Fn14 knockout(KO), and IL-13 receptor(IL-13R)α1 KO BALB/c mice using a single injection of 5-FU. Histological analysis, cytokine analysis, and flow cytometry was performed on ileal tissues and cells. Murine colon carcinomabearing mice were co-treated with an anti-TWEAK antibody and 5-FU. Embryonic fibroblast response to cytokines was also ***5-FU induced high Fn14 expression in epithelial cells. The severity of 5-FU-induced diarrhea was lower in Fn14 KO mice compared with WT mice. Administration of anti-TWEAK antibody reduced 5-FU-induced diarrhea without affecting the antitumor effects of 5-FU in vivo. 5-FU-induced expression of IL-13, IL-17 A, TNF-α, and IFN-γ in the ileum was Fn14 dependent. The severity of 5-FU-induced diarrhea was lower in IL-13Rα1 KO mice, indicating major role for IL-13 signaling via IL-13Rα1 in pathogenesis. We found that IL-13Rα2, an IL-13 neutralizing/cell protective receptor, was strongly induced by IL-33 in vitro and in vivo. IL-13Rα2 was upregulated in the ileum of 5-FU-treated Fn14 KO mice. Thus, the deletion of Fn14 upregulated IL-13Rα2 expression, which reduced IL-13 expression and activity. CONCLUSION Disruption of the TWEAK/Fn14 pathway affects several interconnected pathways, including those associated with IL-13, IL-33, and IL-13Rα2, to attenuate 5-FUinduced intestinal side effects.

The dispersion of nanoparticles plays a key role in enhancing the mechanical performance of polymer *** this work,one hybrid epoxy nanocomposite reinforced by a well dispersed,zinc oxide functionalized,multi-wall carbon nanotube (Zn O-MWCNT) and core-shell rubber (CSR) was prepared,which possesses both high modulus and fracture toughness while maintaining relatively high glass transition temperature (Tg).The improved fracture toughness from 0.82 MPa mfor neat epoxy to 1.46 MPa mfor the ternary epoxy nanocomposites is resulted from a series of synergistic toughening mechanisms,including cavitation of CSR-induced matrix shear banding,along with the fracture of MWCNTs and crack *** implication of the present study for the preparation of high-performance polymer nanocomposites is discussed.

Fabrication of initial trabecular bone-inspired three-dimensional structure with cell membrane nano fragments

The extracellular matrix of trabecular bone has a large surface exposed to the bone marrow and plays important roles such as hematopoietic stem cell niche formation and *** vitro reproduction of trabecular bone microenvironment would be valuable not only for developing a functional scaffold for bone marrow tissue engineering but also for understanding its biological ***,we analyzed and reproduced the initial stages of trabecular bone formation in mouse femur *** identified that the trabecular bone formation progressed through the following steps:(i)partial rupture of hypertrophic chondrocytes;(ii)calcospherite formation on cell membrane nano fragments(CNFs)derived from the ruptured cells;and(iii)calcospherite growth and fusion to form the initial three-dimensional(3D)structure of trabecular *** reproducing the initial trabecular bone formation in vitro,we collected CNFs from cultured cells and used as nucleation sites for biomimetic calcospherite ***,almost the same 3D structure of the initial trabecular bone could be obtained in vitro by using additional CNFs as a binder to fuse biomimetic calcospherites.
