Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the antithrombotic properties of different strains of orally available antithrombotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Research Methods & Procedures: Antithrombotic activity, antiplatelet reactivity and/or thrombolytic activity, were measured in seven strains of LAB and LAB cell-free-extracts (LAB filtrates) using the shear-induced platelet reactivity/thrombolytic activity, The Global Thrombosis Test (GTT), with non-anticoagulated rat blood in vitro. Subsequently, the most potent antithrombotic strains identified in vitro were assessed in vivo after oral administration in mouse carotid arteries using a helium-neon laser-induced thrombosis model. Result: Five strains out of seven LAB (Lactobacillus paracasei KW 3100, Lactobacillus fermentum NBRC 3961, Lactobacillus pentosus JCM 8333, Leuconostoc oeni Elios 1, Pediococcus pentosaceus NK-2) promoted significant endogenous thrombolysis in vitro. In addition, one strain (Lactobacillus fermentum NBRC 3961) significantly inhibited shear-induced platelet re-activity. Three antithrombotic strains, Lactobacillus fermentum NBRC 3961, Leuconostoc oeni Elios 1, and Lactobacillus pentosus JCM 8333, were further assessed in vivo. The results demonstrated that filtrates, and the cells per se of these LAB, modulated antiplatelet activity and/or thrombolytic activity, and that the antithrombotic mechanisms were mainly influenced by protein content (60% - 70% of dry matter). Conclusion: The findings suggested that some strains of lactic acid bacteria could usefully provide the basis for the production of oral antithrombotic probiotics.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of peripheral portal vein(PV)-oriented non-dilated bile duct(BD) puncture for percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage(PTBD).METHODS: Thirty-five patients with non-dilated BDs underwent PTBD for the management of various biliary disorders, including benign bilioenteric anastomotic stricture(n = 24), BD stricture(n = 5) associated with iatrogenic BD injury, and postoperative biliary leakage(n = 6). Under ultrasonographic guidance, percutaneous transhepatic puncture using a 21-G needle was performed along the running course of the peripheral targeted non-dilated BD(preferably B6 for right-sided approach, and B3 for left-sided approach) or along the accompanying PV when the BD was not well visualized. This technique could provide an appropriate insertion angle of less than 30° between the puncture needle and BD running course. The puncture needle was then advanced slightly beyond the accompanying PV. The needle tip was moved slightly backward while injecting a small amount of contrast agent to obtain the BD image, followed by insertion of a 0.018-inch guide wire(GW). A drainage catheter was then placed usinga two-step GW method. RESULTS: PTBD was successful in 33(94.3%) of the 35 patients with non-dilated intrahepatic BDs. A rightsided approach was performed in 25 cases, while a left-sided approach was performed in 10 cases. In 31 patients, the first PTBD attempt proved successful. Four cases required a second attempt a few days later to place a drainage catheter. PTBD was successful in two cases, but the second attempt also failed in the other two cases, probably due to poor breath-holding ability. Although most patients(n = 26) had been experiencing cholangitis with fever(including septic condition in 8 cases) before PTBD, only 5(14.3%) patients encountered PTBD procedure-related complications, such as transient hemobilia and cholangitis. In-situ analysis for SiC bulk single crystal growth was reported using vertical X-ray diffractometer system. A furnace for SiC sublimation growth combined with the XRD system which possessed three kinds of functions including topography, rocking curve measurement and crystal growth rate monitoring was developed. These functions could contribute as a powerful tool finding the optimum growth condition by dynamic observation in the crucible. In this study, the in-situ X-ray topographs succeeded to capture dynamic elongation of defects and dislocation generated in the SiC growing crystals. The in-situ rocking curve measurement reviled appearance of mosaic structure in the SiC crystal grown with high growth rate. The in-situ growth rate monitoring also succeeded very precisely using the direct X-ray beam absorption. On the base of findings and facts obtained by the in-situ observations, the importance for the SiC growth was discussed.

The friction characteristics of a shock absorber are very complex because the reciprocating motion is not always *** this study,a device was developed and used to analyze the dynamic friction characteristics under various reciprocating sliding conditions to determine the sliding materials and hydraulic oils that improve the shock absorber *** study describes the influence of hydraulic oil additive on the fine reciprocating friction characteristics of steel and copper *** oils were prepared by blending a paraffinic mineral oil with zinc dithiophosphate(ZnDTP)and polyhydric alcohol ester as *** results show that the dynamic frictional characteristics vary mainly depending on the additive concentration.A specific additive formulation induces a unique amplitude-dependent friction *** addition,the influence of different additives on the lubrication mechanism is investigated based on the instrumental analysis of the friction surface.

Highly precise (σ ~1 mm) temporal deformation measurements are taken across the Xianshuihe fault from two pairs of continuous GPS stations straddling the fault. Baseline vector changes of the two pairs of stations show clearly the difference in deformation behavior between the Qianning and Daofu segments of the fault: the former deforms steadily, and the latter deforms with a strong transient component. The transient deformation across the Daofu segment is possibly related to its irregular geometry, where the fault splits into two branches, that is, the east and west branches. An attempt is made to interpret the baseline vector changes using a kinematic fault model composed of a brittle layer in the upper crust, a ductile layer in the lower crust, and a transition zone in between. The slip in the transition zone of the south segment of the Xianshuihe fault is steady. The slips in the transition zones of the north and Daofu segments of the Xianshuihe fault, however, are not steady, and the average slip rates there are higher than that of the south segment. The difference in deformation behavior is probably associated with the rheological properties of the fault interface, suggesting that the overall fault strength of the south segment is greater than those of the north and Daofu segments, corresponding to longer earthquake recurrence time.

There has been a great discrepancy of pathological diagnosis for gastric non-invasive neoplasia/dysplasia between Japanese and western pathologists. In Japan, lesions that most western pathologists diagnose as dysplasia are often considered adenocarcinoma based on nuclear and structural atypia regardless of the presence of invasion. In the Vienna classification, gastric non-invasive intraepithelial neoplasia(NIN) weredivided into low grade and high grade(including intramucosal cancer of Japanese criteria). The diagnosis by both endoscopy and pathology of biopsy specimen is difficult. Recent advances of diagnostic modality such as magnified endoscopy and imaged enhanced endoscopy is expected to improve the diagnostic yield for NIN. There are two treatment strategies for NIN, observation and diagnostic therapy by endoscopic resection(ER). ER is acceptable because of its less invasiveness and high local control rate, on the other hand, cancer-developing rate of low-grade NIN is reported to be low. Therefore there is controversy for the treatment of gastric NIN. Prospective study based on unified pathological definition is required in the future.

Tests with two different sized models were conducted in the Marine Propeller Cavitation Tunnel at the Univer- sity of *** two angles of attack the developed sheet-cloud and bubble cavitation *** pattern was recorded by pure indium specimens and noise was measured with a hydrophone mounted inside the *** broadband SPL was mainly used for correlation of noise with pit counting results from *** case of sheet- cloud cavitation power law relations between velocity and SPL have been found and there existed a linear relation- ship between SPL values and IgPR values(PR-pitting rate).However in case of bubble cavitation such power law relation does not exist between pitting rate and velocity,and neither between SPL and *** was noticed that the different trends of SPL for these two different types of cavitation could be qualitatively linked to their pitting rates by using some SPL values at high center frequencies.

Underweight and Obesity in Low Birth Weight Children in Early Infancy in Japan

Introduction: Although there are several reports on the prevalence of underweight or obesity in low birth weight (LBW, th percentile and ≥90th percentile of the body mass index (BMI), respectively, based on reference values for Japanese children. Results: LBW children had accelerated growth from birth to age 3.5 years, but at Age 5, both sexes had significantly lesser height and weight z-scores, with notably lesser BMI percentile scores for girls, compared with NBW children. The prevalence of underweight was significantly higher in the LBW children throughout the study period. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of obesity between the two groups, except for at birth. Multiple regression analysis revealed that small-for-gestational age was associated with underweight at Age 5 years. Conclusions: This study indicates that, up to Age 5, underweight is a more serious problem than obesity in LBW children. Our results suggest that careful observation of growth from early infancy is necessary to prevent the occurrence of underweight in early infancy.

AIM: To study gastric mucosal interleukine-8 (IL-8) mRNA expression, the cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA) mutation, and serum pepsinogen (PG)?I/II ratio related risk in Thai gastric cancer.METHODS: There were consent 134 Thai non-cancer volunteers who underwent endoscopic narrow band imaging examination, and 86 Thais advance gastric cancer patients who underwent endoscopic mucosal biopsies and gastric surgery. Tissue samples were taken by endoscopy with 3 points biopsies. The serum PG?I, II, and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody for H. pylori were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. The histopathology description of gastric cancer and non-cancer with H. pylori detection was defined with modified Sydney Score System. Gastric mucosal tissue H. pylori DNA was extracted and genotyped for cagA mutation. Tissue IL-8 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA expression were conducted by real time relative quantitation polymerase chain reaction. From 17 Japanese advance gastric cancer and 12 benign gastric tissue samples, all were tested for genetic expression with same methods as well as Thai gastric mucosal tissue samples. The multivariate analysis was used for the risk study. Correlation and standardized t-test were done for quantitative data, P value < 0.05 was considered as a statistically significant.RESULTS: There is a high non cagA gene of 86.8 per cent in Thai gastric cancer although there are high yields of the East Asian type in the positive cagA. The H. pylori infection prevalence in this study is reported by combined histopathology and H. pylori IgG antibody test with 77.1% and 97.4% of sensitivity and specificity, respectively. The serum PG?I/II ratio in gastric cancer is significantly lower than in the non-cancer group, P = 0.045. The serum PG?I/II ratio of less than 3.0 and IL-8 mRNA expression ≥ 100 or log10 ≥ 2 are significant cut off risk differences between Thai cancer and non-cancer, P = 0.03 and P < 0.001,
