Sorption of biodegradation end products of nonylphenol polyethoxylates onto activated sludge

Nonylphenol(NP), nonylphenoxy acetic acid(NP1EC), nonylphenol monoethoxy acetic acid(NP2EC), nonylphenol monoethoxylate(NP1EO) and nonylphenol diethoxylate(NP2EO) are biodegradation end products(BEPs) of nonionic surfactant nonylphenolpolyethoxylates (NPnEO). In this research, sorption of these compounds onto model activated sludge was characterized. Sorption equilibrium experiments showed that NP, NP1EO and NP2EO reached equilibrium in about 12 h, while equilibrium of NP1EC and NP2EC were reached earlier, in about 4 h. In sorption isotherm experiments, obtained equilibrium data at 28℃ fitted well to Freundlich sorption model for all investigated compounds. For NP1EC, in addition to Freundlich, equilibrium data also fitted well to Langmuir model. Linear sorption model was also tried, and equilibrium data of all NP, NP1EO, NP2EO and NP2EC except NP1EC fitted well to this model. Calculated Freundlich coefficient(K F) and linear sorption coefficient(K D) showed that sorption capacity of the investigated compounds were in order NP>NP2EO>NP1EO>NP1EC≈NP2EC. For NP, NP1EO and NP2EO, high values of calculated K F and K D indicated an easy uptake of these compounds from aqueous phase onto activated sludge. Whereas, NP1EC and NP2EC with low values of K F and K D absorbed weakly to activated sludge and tended to preferably remain in aqueous phase.

We demonstrate the non-mechanical beam steering and amplifier operation of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser(VCSEL)integrated Bragg reflector waveguide amplifier with a cut-off wavelength detuning design,which enables unidirectional lateral coupling,continuous electrical beam steering,and diffraction-limited divergence *** present the modeling of the proposed structure for unidirectional coupling between a seed single-mode VCSEL and slow-light *** also present the detailed operating characteristics including the near-field and far-field patterns,light/current characteristics,and lasing *** experimental measurements exhibit a single-mode output of over 8 mW under CW operation,a continuous beam steering range of 16°,and beam divergence below 0.1°as an optical beam *** integrated amplifier length is as small as 0.9 mm,and thus we could expect much higher powers and higher resolution points by increasing the amplifier lengths.

Causal role of Helicobacter pylori infection and eradication therapy in gastric carcinogenesis

Many epidemiological reports indicate that Helicobacter pylori （H pylori） infection plays an important role in gastric carcinogenesis. Several genetic and epigenetic alterations contribute to the initiation, promotion, and progression of the cancer cells in a multi-step manner. H pylori is known to induce chronic inflammation in the gastric mucosa. Its products, including superoxides, participate in the DNA damage followed by initiation, and the inflammation-derived cytokines and growth factors contribute to the promotion of gastric carcinogenesis. By eradicating H pylori, gastric inflammation can be cured; the therapy diminishes the levels not only of inflammatory cell infiltration, but also atrophy/ intestinal metaplasia in part. A randomized controlled trial revealed that the eradication therapy diminished the gastric cancer prevalence in cases without precancerous conditions. In addition, recent epidemiological studies from Japanese groups demonstrated that the development of gastric cancer, especially of the intestinal type, was decreased by successful eradication therapy, although these were designed in a non- randomized manner. However, it should be mentioned that endoscopic detection is the only way to evaluate the degree of gastric carcinogenesis. We have reported that the endoscopic and histological morphologies could be modified by eradication therapy and it might contribute to the prevalence of gastric cancer development. Considering the biological nature of cancer cell proliferation, it is considered that a sufficiently long-term follow-up would be essential to discuss the anticancer effect of eradication therapy.

Impaired suppressive activities of human MUTYH variant proteins against oxidative mutagenesis

AIM:To elucidate the effect of antioxidants,resveratrol (RVT)and astaxanthin(AXN),on hepatitis C virus(HCV) replication. METHODS:We investigated the effect of recent popular antioxidant supplements on replication of the HCV replicon system *** is a strong antioxidant and a kind of polyphenol that inhibits replication of various *** is also a strong *** replication of HCV RNA was assessed by the luciferase reporter *** additive effect of antioxidants on antiviral effects of interferon(IFN)and ribavirin(RBV) was ***:This is the first report to investigate the effect of RVT and AXN on HCV *** contrast to other reported viruses,RVT significantly enhanced HCV RNA *** E also enhanced HCV RNA replication as reported previously,although AXN didnot affect *** and RBV significantly reduced HCV RNA replication,but these effects were dose-dependently hampered and attenuated by the addition of *** didnot affect antiviral effects of IFN or RBV. CONCLUSION:These results suggested that RVT is not suitable as an antioxidant therapy for chronic hepatitis C.

Molecular Cloning and Functional Characterization of Porcine MyD88 Essential for TLR Signaling

We isolated cDNA encoding porcine MyD88 （poMyD88） from Peyer＇s patches （Pps） of GALT. The complete open reading frame （ORF） of poMyD88 contains 879 bp encoding a deduced 293 aa residues. The amino acid sequence of poMyD88 was characterized by N-terminal death, intermediate and C-terminal Toll/IL-1 receptor （TIR） domains. The putative poMyD88 protein shares a higher level of homology with its human （87.2% amino acid identity） than with its mouse （77.4% amino acid identity） counterpart. Overexpression of poMyD88 participated in the further enhanced activation of NF-w.B in human embryonic kidney （HEK） 293 cells expressing porcine TLR2 and porcine TLR4/MD-2, but not porcine RP105/MD-1 after stimulation with the corresponding ligands. The expression levels of MyD88 were highest in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes （MLNs）, and lower in digestive tissues of newborn swine. In adult swine, the expression levels in the digestive tissues were lower than those in MLNs and the spleen. These results suggest that an MyD88-dependent signaling pathway is present in newborn as well as in adult swine and that it is involved in the innate immune system of these animals.

High-density circulating fluidized bed gasifier for advanced IGCC/IGFC-Advantages and challenges

Coal-fired Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle （IGCC） and Integrated coal Gasification Fuel-cell Com- bined cycle （IGFC） are being developed as high-efficiency electric power generation technology. However, the highest theoretical gross thermal efficiency of the conventional IGCC]IGFC is still below 52~. In order to obtain higher power generation efficiency, an advanced IGCC （A-IGCC） or advanced IGFC （A-IGFC） sys- tem making use of the exergy recuperation concept by recycling waste heat from gas turbine or fuel cells for steam gasification of coal and biomass was proposed in our laboratory, Corresponding to this system, a novel high-density triple-bed combined circulating fluidized bed （TBCFB） gasifier, composed of a downer pyrolyzer, a bubbling fluidized bed char gasifier, and a riser combustor, was proposed to replace traditional gasifiers such as the entrained flow bed gasifier. The new system is expected to more effectively utilize the waste heat from gas turbines or fuel cells and the heat produced by the combustion of the unreacted char in the riser combustor for pyrolysis and gasification of coal and biomass. In this short review, the advantages and future challenges in the development of high-density TBCFB gasifier are presented and discussed.

Leakage behavior and distortion of the hysteresis loop in ferroelectric thin films

Leakage behavior and distortion of the polarization hysteresis loop in ferroelectric thin films are analyzed by applying a totally depleted asymmetric back-to-back Schottky model, with the Pt/Pb(Zr, Ti)O3/Pt ( Pt/ PZT/Pt) sandwich structural thin film capacitor as an example. Some interesting phenomena resulting from the asymmetric interfaces, such as the leakage current level, the flat-band voltage, the disclosure of the hysteresis loop, and the change in the remanent polarization and coercive field, as well as the vertical drift of the polarization hysteresis loop, are discussed in detail. The calculated results are also verified with experiments.

Ultra high-throughput DNA sequencing has been a very hot topic beyond the field of genomic *** have been various approaches to this issue ranging from direct observation of individual DNA synthesis[1],amperometric/optical detection of bases using a nanopore[2,3]and direct sequencing with a high-resolution probe microscope[4].Recently,we have developed a technique to chemically modify all nucleobases in DNA[5],so that the bases A,T,G,C can be differentiated in the sequence by using high-resolution electron microscopy(EM).
