Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem worldwide and a large number of fatal cases are still reported. Immunocompetent individuals are naturally susceptible to TB, and immunocompromised patients have a greater risk of infection. Although patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) are in an immunosuppressed condition, there is only one reported case of TB accompanied with ATL in the English- language literature in the field of dermatology. Here, we report two patients with chronic-type ATL infected with TB manifesting as cutaneous solitary masses. Case 1 was a 58-year-old woman diagnosed with lumbar abscess with pulmonary TB. Case 2 was an 84-year-old woman diagnosed with tuberculous lymphadenitis in the left cervical region. It is important to raise the differential diagnosis of TB and perform tissue culture for acid-fast bacilli as well as Interferon-Gamma release assay test when dermatologists encounter mass lesions in patients with ATL.

Tree-ring width(RW),density,elemental com-position,and stable carbon and oxygen isotope(δ^(13)C,δ^(18)O)are widely used as proxies to assess climate change,ecology,and environmental pollution;however,a specific pretreat-ment has been needed for each ***,we developed a method by which each proxy can be measured in the same ***,the sample is polished for ring width *** obtaining the ring width data,the sample is cut to form a 1-mm-thick wood *** sample is then mounted in a vertical sample holder,and gradually scanned by an X-ray ***,the count rates of the fluorescent photons of elements(for chemical characteriza-tion)and a radiographic grayscale image(for wood density)are obtained,*** density and the element content are ***,cellulose is isolated from the 1-mm wood plate by removal of lignin,and *** producing this cellulose plate,cellulose subsamples are separated by knife under the microscope for inter-annual and intra-annual stable carbon and oxygen isotope(δ^(13)C,δ^(18)O)*** on this method,RW,density,elemental composition,δ^(13)C,and δ^(18)O can be measured from the same sample,which reduces sample amount and treatment time,and is helpful for multi-proxy comparison and combination research.

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) infection is a rare disease in Japan but the leading cause of death related to raw seafood consumption. We hereby reported a successfully treated case of V. vulnificus septicemia, severe necrotizing fasciitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation and multiple organ failure after raw perch consumption with underlying alcoholic liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus. It is the first report of a case of V. vulnificusinfection caused by eating raw perch, whereas V. vulnificus infection should be suspected in all of middle-aged to elderly men with underlying immunosuppressive diseases, who have recent consumption of raw seafood or contact with seawater, especially in the summer. The levels of HbA1c and glycoalbumin were not high in the present case, however, obvious hyperglycemia was found even after the infection had completely healed. On reviewing 166 case of V. vulnificus infection in Japan including ours, the complication of diabetes mellitus, one of immunocompromised condition, was found only in 11%, although it had been reported that individuals strongly suspected of having diabetes were 17.2% among the Japanese male population aged from 40 to 74 years. Because diabetes mellitus might be underdiagnosed in the previous reports, intensive examinations are considered to be necessary in order to correctly diagnose diabetes mellitus in patients with severe V. vulnificus infection.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy has dramatically improved patient prognosis,and thereby transformed the treatment in various cancer types including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in the past *** antibodies that selectively inhibit programmed cell death-1(PD-1)activity has now become standard of care in the treatment of ESCC in metastatic settings,and has a high expectation to provide clinical benefit during perioperative ***,anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte–associated protein 4(CTLA-4)monoclonal antibody has also been approved in the treatment of recurrent/metastatic ESCC in combination with anti-PD-1 *** understanding of the existing evidence of immune-based treatments for ESCC,as well as recent clinical trials on various combinations with chemotherapy for different clinical settings including neoadjuvant,adjuvant,and metastatic diseases,may provide future prospects of ESCC treatment for better patient outcomes.

黑冠鳽(Gorsachius melanolophus)分布于南亚、东南亚及东亚的热带和亚热带地区。由于此鸟种常繁殖于密林中,对其生态学特征知之甚少,目前仅有少量关于其食性的信息。我们通过分析日本南部八重山群岛黑冠鳽食丸和胃的内含物,定量分析了该地区黑冠鳽的食性特征。结果表明,黑冠鳽最喜捕食陆地上的蜗牛、蛛形类、淡水蟹类及昆虫等食物,但不包括鱼类。蚯蚓被普遍认为是该鸟种的一个主要食物,但因蚯蚓的易消化性,极少在食丸中残留,所以我们并未观察黑冠鳽捕食蚯蚓的证据。这表明黑冠鳽主要以活动于湿润森林地表的土壤动物为食。虽然黑冠鳽并不直接栖息于水生环境,但它偏好具有溪流及沼泽等湿地生境的潮湿森林。因此,为更好地维持黑冠鳽的种群,需对环境潮湿的森林加以保护。

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) is characterized by the presence of airflow limitations that are not fully reversible and is a major cause of chronic morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although there has been extensive research examining the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of COPD, there is no proven clinically effective treatment for promoting recovery from established COPD. At present, regeneration is the only hope for a cure in patients with COPD. In this article, we review current treatments for COPD, focusing particularly on recent advances in lung regeneration based on two major approaches: regeneration-promoting agents and cell therapy. Retinoic acids are the majorfocus among regeneration-promoting agents, while mesenchymal stem cells are the main topic in the field of cell-based therapy. This article aims to provide valuable information for developing new therapies for COPD.
