Transcription factors encoded by the ETS family of genes are central in integrating signals that regulate cell growth and differentiation, stress responses and tumorigenesis. This study, using laser microdissected paired benign and malignant prostate epithelial cells from prostate cancer (CaP) patients (n=114), identifies ERG, a member of the ETS transcription factor family, as the most frequently overexpressed poto-oncogene in the transcriptome of malignant prostate epithelial cells. Combined quantitative expression analysis of ERG with two other genes commonly overexpressed in CaP, AMACR and DD3, revealed overexpression of at least one of these three genes in virtually all cancer specimen (54 of 55). Aneurysmal dilatation of the aortic sinuses of Valsalva has been most extensively documented in the setting of aortopathies, particularly Marfan syndrome. On the other hand, there is limited data in the literature about congenital sinus of Valsalva aneurysms outside this context. For the purpose of this review, we carried out a literature search on aneurysmal dilatation of the sinuses of Valsalva in Marfan syndrome, and compared this with congenital sinus of Valsaiva aneurysms, also including data from a case series from our institution. In conclusion, there are differences in management of aortic dilatation in Marfan syndrome and congenital sinus of Valsalva aneurysms. Though less weil-recognised, congenital aneurysms are often associated with significant morbidity and mortality and timely intervention is necessary.

Polymer optical fibres(POFs) have historically been regarded as a poor relation to their silica counterparts because of their higher attenuation, but they also have a number of advantages, particularly when coupled with a range of properties that can be produced using microstructures. In terms of their mechanical properties, they are lighter, remain flexible at large core sizes and can be stretched well beyond 30% without breakage. They are also biocompatible, they do not produce dangerous shards,and their low processing temperatures allow functionalized organic materials to be incorporated without decomposition. Other advantages for specific applications include better transmission properties(in the THz region) and the possibility of refractive indices that are close to that of water.

A kind of microstructured polymer optical fiber with elliptical core has been fabricated by adopting insitu chemical polymerization technology and the secondary sleeving draw-stretching technique. Microscope photography demonstrates the clear hole-structure retained in the fiber. Though the holes distortion is visible, initial laser experiment indicates that light can be strongly confined in the elliptical core region, and the mode field is split obviously and presents the multi-mode characteristic. Numerical modeling is carried out for the real fiber with the measured parameters, including the external diameter of 150 μm, the average holes diameter of 3.3 μm, and the average hole spacing of 6.3 μm by using full-vector plane wave method. The guided mode fields of the numerical simulation are consistent with the experiment result. This fiber shows the strong multi-mode and weak birefringence in the visible and near-infrared band, and has possibility for achieving the fiber mode convertors, mode selective couplers and so on.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE While several studies have demonstrated that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) increase the risk for abnormal bleeding, the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) among those patients has not been clearly demonstrated. This study assessed the risk of spontaneous ICH associated with the use of SSRIs, as compared with tricyclic antidepressant drugs (TCAs).METHODS Data were obtained from the United Kingdom′s Clinical Practice Research Data Link (CPRD), with a search for individuals 18 years of age or older with a first prescription of antidepressant medications between 1995 and 2014. The patients were followed until the date of the first ICH outcome event, death, or the end of the study. Each case of first ICH was matched with up to 30 controls for age, gender, calendar time and duration of *** The cohort consisted of 1, 363, 990 users of antidepressants, with 56.7% using SSRIs and 39.2% using TCAs. Current use of SSRIs was associated with an increased risk of ICH relative to TCAs (relative risk, 1.44), with this risk highest in the first 30 days of use. The use of strong inhibitors of serotonin reuptake was associated with a 25% increased risk as compared with weak *** This study of new users of antidepressants found that intracranial hemorrhage was elevated with the use of SSRIs, as compared with TCAs, with this risk highest in the first 30 days of use.
