Objective:To evaluate antioxidant,cytotoxic,and anti-venom capacity of crude bark extracts of Alstonia parvifolia ***:Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(Gc-MS)and energy dispersive X-ray analyses were accomplished to characterize the chemical constituents of Alstonia *** characterization was evaluated using an inhibitory phospholipase A_(2)(PLA_(2))assay,DPPH,and cytotoxicity *** the constituents listed in the Gc-MS analyses,molecular docking was conducted to inspect the binding energies between the chosen compounds and selected PLA_(2) ***:Gc-MS analyses showed that the Alstonia parvifolia crude extract consisted predominantly of acetylmarinobufogenin(14.89%),γ-sitosterol(10.44%),3-O-methyl-D-glucose(5.88%),3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid(5.30%),(2α,5α)-17-methoxyaspidofractinin-3-one(AFM)(4.08%),and 2,3,5,6,7,8,9-heptahydro-1-phenyl-5-(p-chlorophenylimino)-1H-benzo[e][1,4]thiazepine(HPT)(1.37%).The principal elemental components of Alstonia parvifolia were ca(4.012%)and K(1.496%),as exhibited by energy dispersive X-ray *** parvifolia showed significant free radical scavenging ability(Ic_(50):0.287 mg/mL)and was non-cytotoxic to normal HDFn cells(Ic_(50)>100μg/mL).Moreover,Alstonia parvifolia was favorably cytotoxic to McF-7(Ic_(50):4.42µg/mL),followed by H69PR,HT-29,and THP-1,with Ic_(50) values of 4.94,5.07,and 6.27µg/mL,*** parvifolia also displayed notable inhibition against PLA_(2) activity of Naja philippinensis Taylor venom with Ic_(50) of(15.2±1.8)μg/*** and cluster analyses projected negative binding energies from AFM(−6.36 to−9.68 kcal/mol),HPT(−7.38 to−9.77 kcal/mol),and acetylmarinobufogenin(−7.22 to−9.59 kcal/mol).These calculations were for the particular interactions of Alstonia parvifolia constituents to PLA_(2) homologues where the utmost affinity was detected in HPT owing to the dipole interactions with amino acid ***:The bark e

The effect of a urinary incontinence selfmanagement program for older women in South Korea:A pilot study

Fitting and evaluation of height-diameter models for Alnus japonica in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines

The study was conducted to develop height-diameter at breast height(HT-DBH) models for Alnus japonica in La Trinidad, Benguet,Philippines and evaluate their predictive *** six widely used nonlinear growth models that were selected in this study were the chapmanRichards, Schnute, Modified logistic, Korf/Lundqvist,Weibull and Exponential. A total of 208 Alnus japonica trees were measured using standard diameter tape for DBH(1.3 m above the ground) and Vertex and transponder was used for the total height measurement. The performance of the developed models were evaluated using the fit statistics including coefficient of determination(R^2), root mean square error(RMSE), mean bias(ē), absolute mean difference(AMD), and Akaike Information criterion(AIc). The lack-of-fit statistics was also performed for further evaluation of the performance of the *** on the evaluation criteria, all six models were able to determine the DBH-height relationships and fitted the data well. Using the rank analysis, the Weibull HT-DBH model had the best performance among the six commonly used nonlinear growth models. The results of this study will help forest managers especially in La Trinidad, Benguet to easily predict the total height using the Weibull model for Alnus japonica utilizing the DBH as the predicting variable.

Neuromodulatory effects of ethyl acetate fraction of Zingiber officinale Roscoe extract in rats with lead-induced oxidative stress

Objective: This study investigated the ameliorative potential of Zingiber officinale Roscoe extract against lead-induced brain damage in ***: Thirty male rats were divided into 5 groups of 6 rats each. Lead-acetate toxicity was induced by intraperitoneal injection(10 mg/kg body weight(b.w.)) in Groups B–E. Group A(control) and Group B(lead-acetate) were left untreated; vitamin c(200 mg/kg b.w.) was administered to Group c; ethyl acetate fraction from Z. officinale extract(200 and 100 mg/kg b.w.) was administered to Group D and E by oral gavage once daily for 7 days. changes in the content of some key marker enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase(AchE), butyrylcholinesterase(BchE), monoamine oxidase(MAO), epinephrine, dopamine,Na^+/K^+-ATPase, catalase(cAT), superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx) as well as malonaldehyde(MDA) levels were determined in ***: Exposure to lead acetate resulted in a significant decrease(P ctivities of BchE,AchE, Na^+/K^+-ATPase, SOD, cAT and GPx with a corresponding increase in the levels of MDA, xanthine oxidase, epinephrine, dopamine and MAO relative to the control group. Levels of all disrupted parameters were alleviated by co-administration of Z. officinale fraction and by the standard drug, vitamin ***: These results suggest that ethyl acetate fraction of Z. officinale extract attenuates leadinduced brain damage and might have therapeutic potential as a supplement that can be applied in lead poisoning.

Effect of Pre-Gelatinization conditions on the Total Oxalate content and Techno-Functional Properties of Taro (colocasia esculenta) Flour

Like most roots and tubers, taro (colocasia esculenta) corms have a short shelf-life due to the high moisture content, which aggravates their post-harvest losses. They also contain high amounts of calcium oxalates, limiting their use in food applications. To help add value and diversify the use of taro corms as well as curb food losses, various strategies have been proposed, such processing of the corms into flour. This study aimed at evaluating the total oxalate content and techno-functional properties of taro flour as affected by the pre-gelatinization conditions (i.e., method and time). Pre-gelatinized taro flour was prepared by subjecting peeled and cleaned taro corms to roasting (190°c), boiling (100°c), and steaming (100°c) for 10 min, 20 min and 30 min, respectively, for each method, followed by drying at 55°c and milling. Generally, all the properties of flour were significantly affected by the pre-gelatinization conditions (P 0.05). The total oxalate content of the pre-gelatinized taro flour ranged from 33.26 to 76.90 mg/100g. Pre-gelatinization by boiling significantly reduced the oxalate content (56.7%), while roasting resulted in the least reduction (36.2%). The flour colour i.e. L*, hue, and chroma ranged from 38.47° - 70.30°, 42.64° - 69.43°, and 7.78° - 10.58°, respectively. Roasting resulted in flour with the largest L* (70.30°) and hue angle (69.43°). Boiling also resulted in flour with the highest bulk density (BD) (0.86 g/cm3) and the lowest water solubility index (WSI) (9.39%). Steamed flour had the highest water absorption index (WAI) (3.81 g/g), water holding capacity (WHc) (4.59 g/g), and swelling capacity (Sc) (4.86 g/g). This study shows that pre-gelatinization (i.e. by boiling, steaming or roasting) significantly affects the total oxalate content and techno-functional properties of taro flour, which in turn influences its use in other food applications thus increasing the utilization and production of taro s

An Assessment of Predisposing Factors of Atherogenic Dyslipidemia in an Urban Pediatric Population in cameroon

Background: Dyslipidemia in childhood contributes to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life. This study sets out to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia and describe the associations between selected variables and dyslipidemia in cameroon urban children. Methods: This cross-sectional hospital-based study included 415 children (188 boys and 227 girls) between the ages of 5 and 16 years. Dyslipidemia was defined as an abnormal value of one or more of the following lipids: Total cholesterol (Tc), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). Percentage body fat (%BF) was estimated using bio-electric impedance analysis. A structured questionnaire was used by parents to report physical activity, screen time and eating habits of the children. Relationships between predictors and dyslipidemia were assessed using multiple binary logistic regression analyses. Results: The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 46.0%. Dyslipidemic children had significantly higher %BF, TG and LDL-c and lower HDL-c than the normal children (p p = 0.004), short stature (OR 2.8, 95% cI 1.1 - 6.8, p = 0.041), physical activity p conclusion: This study confirms that obesity, short stature, physical activity ccasional consumption of fruits/vegetables were associated with dyslipidemia. Also, a high proportion of children had one or more lipid disorders. This is concerning and indicates the importance of assessing dyslipidemia in pre-school children in future studies.

The onset of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is initiated by different cell types in the liver and a number of different factors including: products derived from ethanol-induced inflammation, ethanol metabolites, and the indirect reactions from those metabolites. Ethanol oxidation results in the production of metabolites that have been shown to bind and form protein adducts, and to increase inflammatory, fibrotic and cirrhotic responses. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has many deleterious effects and plays a significant role in a number of disease processes by increasing inflammatory cytokine release. In ALD, LPS is thought to be derived from a breakdown in the intestinal wall enabling LPS from resident gut bacterial cell walls to leak into the blood stream. The ability of adducts and LPS to independently stimulate the various cells of the liver provides for a two-hit mechanism by which various biological responses are induced and result in liver injury. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to evaluate the effects of a two-hit combination of ethanol metabolites and LPS on the cells of the liver to increase inflamma-tion and fi brosis, and play a role in the development and/or progression of ALD.

Perception of Post-Secondary Students on Environmental Practices in Selected communities in the Philippines: Implications to climate change Action

climate change contributes to disasters in the Philippines. Most human activities have had negative consequences on the environment, exacerbating global warming. Humans contribute to climate change and global warming by burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees, engaging in improper waste disposal, using electricity, and driving a car. This study assessed the environmental practices of communities in Nueva Ecija, Philippines, and their implications for climate change. Respondents were selected using convenient sampling. A questionnaire delivered online was used to elicit their responses then analyzed the data using SPSS. This study revealed that most post-secondary students do not litter but sometimes burn their trash in an open dump. Most of them used LPG as their primary source of fuel for cooking. Rice production is always the same as producing food waste in food production. Garden waste was sometimes produced. Plastic containers are commonly produced as recyclable wastes. They often dispose of wastes in controlled and regulated open dumpsites by their municipality or city. Due to the pandemic, special wastes like face masks and face shields are disposed of daily. Generally, despite no littering behavior, the respondents never burned their trash or threw it on any body of water. They perceived to disagree that these daily community activities contribute to climate change. Lastly, less than half of them affirmed that there are initiative programs at the barangay level to lessen and eliminate community activities that cause climate change.
