A law of nature?

Is there an overriding principle of nature, hitherto overlooked, that governs all population behavior? A single principle that drives all the regimes observed in nature exponential-like growth, saturated growth, population decline, population extinction, oscillatory behavior? In current orthodox population theory, this diverse range of population behaviors is described by many different equations each with its own specific justification. The signature of an overriding principle would be a differential equation which, in a single statement, embraces all the panoply of regimes. A candidate such governing equation is proposed. The principle from which the equation is derived is this: The effect on the environment of a population’s success is to alter that environment in a way that opposes the success.

Children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds receive unequal opportunities to succeed in school,which will lead to a decreased health literacy as adults[U].This is not only directly associated with an impaired eco-nomic and mental health and wellbeing of young people,but above all with an in creased adult mortality[1-4].While this problem is well known and described,only few and even fewer pediatric studies suggest how to interrupt this downward spiral consistently[5,6].

Dorsal column postsynaptic (DCPS) neurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord have been identified by antidromic stimulation and intracellularly recorded in anesthetized cats. In about one-half of the cells, the antidromic stimulus evokes only an antidromic potential. This potential sometimes has an atypical shape due to penetration-induced depolarization. Atypieal potentials arc converted into typical antidromic spike potentials after intracellular injection of hyperpolarizing current. In the other one-half, the antidromic potentials are followed by postsynaptic activity. Intracellular analysis indicates that this postsynaptic activity is generated largely by activation of the intraspinal collaterals of A-beta primary afferents that are ascending the dorsal columns. Part of this postsynaptic activity has been produced monosynaptically. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） is a highly relevant disorder that induces respiratory muscle dysfunction. One prevalent symptom of COPD is resistive breathing which causes respiratory muscle to significantly increase the magnitude of contractions, resulting in reactive oxygen species （ROS） formation and oxidative stress. Through cellular signaling cascades, ROS activate molecules such as mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor-kB. These signaling molecules stimulate the release of cytokines which in turn cause damage to the diaphragm, involving sarcomeric disruptions. In response to COPD induced fatigue, the diaphragm undergoes a beneficial fibertype shift to type I muscle fibers, which are more resistant to hypoxia than type II fibers. The lung hyperinflation that occurs in COPD also causes intercostal muscle dysfunction, thereby exacerbating COPD symptoms. In addition, COPD is known to have a connection with heart failure, diabetes, and aging, further decreasing respiratory function. Currently, there is no cure for this disorder. Nevertheless, various potential therapeutic strategies focusing on respiratory muscle have been identified including respiratory muscle training, β2-agonist therapy, and lung volume reduction surgery. In this review, we will outline the role of COPD, oxidative stress, and related complications in respiratory muscle dysfunction.

Information security often involves the development and application of sophisticated software to protect sensitive information stored in corporate computers. Yet, in this example of corporate espionage, a clever person, a cellphone and some readily available software were all it took to crack through one company’s advanced security barriers. By reading this article it is hoped that employees at all levels of an organization’s hierarchy will become more aware of—and recognize—how: 1) bits and pieces of seemingly harmless and easy-to-acquire information can be used for sinister purposes;2) building rapport and trust with a person can make them more likely to become unknowing co-conspirators in a devious undertaking;and 3) how one must be constantly alert not to give out information without carefully considering the authenticity and justification of the source requesting it.

Impact of preoperative chemotherapy on surgical results in 139 patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer

Background:The establishment of preoperative chemotherapy(PCT)with FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel in recent years has enabled resectability in many patients with initially locally advanced pancreatic cancer(LAPC).Nevertheless,information about the impact of PCT on surgical results is ***:All patients with initial LAPC who received surgery after chemotherapy at the high-volume centre for pancreatic surgery of ***-Hospital Bochum between 2015 and 2022 were included in this retrospective cohort ***:A total of 139 patients underwent surgery after pre-treatment with FOLFIRINOX(76.3%),gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel(11.5%),both(5.8%)and other regimens(6.5%).Eighty-five tumors(61.2%)were resectable after PCT.R0 resection was achieved in 92.9%,R1 in 7.1%and R2 in 0%of ***-four tumors were still not resectable at the time of *** results of the patients did not show increased postoperative mortality and morbidity compared to the literature *** 30-day mortality was 1.4%.Rates for pancreas-specific complications[postoperative pancreatic fistula(POPF),delayed gastric emptying(DGE),postpancreatectomy hemorrhage(PPH),and others]were not *** occurred in 10.5%and DGE in 26.3%after *** distal pancreatectomy,POPF was detected in 37.5%and DGE in 12.5%.Median postoperative survival(31 vs.13 months)and overall survival after initial diagnosis(40 vs.20 months)were significantly longer in resected patients(P<0.001).Postoperative recurrence-free survival in resected patients amounted to 12 ***:This study underlines that PCT allows resectability of primarily unresectable patients with LAPC without increasing perioperative mortality and *** may lead to a significant prolongation of recurrence-free and overall survival in resected patients after PCT.
