Background:Forests perform various important ecosystem functions that contribute to ecosystem services.In many parts of the world,forest management has shifted from a focus on timber production to multi-purpose forestry,combining timber production with the supply of other forest ecosystem services.However,it is unclear which forest types provide which ecosystem services and to what extent forests primarily managed for timber already supply multiple ecosystem services.Based on a comprehensive dataset collected across 150 forest plots in three regions differing in management intensity and species composition,we develop models to predict the potential supply of 13 ecosystem services.We use those models to assess the level of multifunctionality of managed forests at the national level using national forest inventory data.Results:Looking at the potential supply of ecosystem services,we found trade-offs(e.***.between both bark beetle control or dung decomposition and both productivity or soil carbon stocks)as well as synergies(e.***.for temperature regulation,carbon storage and culturally interesting plants)across the 53 most dominant forest types in Germany.No single forest type provided all ecosystem services equally.Some ecosystem services showed comparable levels across forest types(e.***.decomposition or richness of saprotrophs),while others varied strongly,depending on forest structural attributes(e.***.phosphorous availability or cover of edible plants)or tree species composition(e.***.potential nitrification activity).Variability in potential supply of ecosystem services was only to a lesser extent driven by environmental conditions.However,the geographic variation in ecosystem function supply across Germany was closely linked with the distribution of main tree species.Conclusions:Our results show that forest multifunctionality is limited to subsets of ecosystem services.The importance of tree species composition highlights that a lack of multifunctionality at the stand level can be compensated by managing forests at the

Adhesion between an elastic body and a smooth,rigid substrate can lead to large tensile stresses between them.However,most macroscopic objects are microscopically rough,which strongly suppresses adhesion.A fierce debate has unfolded recently as to whether local or global parameters determine the crossover between small and large adhesion.Here,we report simulations revealing that the dependence of the pull-off force Fn on the surface energyγdoes not only have two regimes of high and low adhesion but up to four regimes.They are related to contacts,which at the moment of rupture consist of(i)the last individual Hertzian-shaped contact,in which is linear inγ,(ii)a last meso-scale,individual patches with super-linear scaling,(iii)many isolated contact patches with extremely strong scaling,and(iv)a dominating largest contact patch,for which the pull-off stress is no longer negligible compared to the maximum,microscopic pull-off stress.Regime(iii)can be seen as a transition domain.It is located near the point where the surface energy is half the elastic energy per unit area in conformal contact.A criterion for the transition between regimes(i)and(ii)appears difficult to grasp.

The classical role of adipocytokines is a negative feedback mechanism,providing information about bodily energy reserves to the brain,and thus controlling satiety and food intake (Campfield et al.,1995).Adipose tissue forms the largest endocrine organ of the body.After the initial description of leptin and its receptor,LEPR/OBR,with its main active isoform OBRb,there was an initial hope for a drugable pathway to counteract the increasing burden of overweight/adiposity,metabolic syndrome,and related disorders (Figure1).

Low-energy ion channeling in nanocubes

Focused ion beam(FIB)processing with low-energy ions has become a standard technique for the manipulation of nanostructures.many underlying ion beam effects that deviate from conventional high-energy ion irradiation of bulk systems are considered today;however,ion channeling with its consequence of significant deeper penetration depth has been only theoretically investigated in this regime.We present here an experimental approach to determine the channeling of low-energy ions in crystalline nanoparticles by measuring the sputter yield derived from scanning electron microscopy(SEm)images taken after irradiation under various incident ion angles.Channeling maps of 30 and 20 keV Ga+ions in Ag nanocubes have been identified and fit well with the theory.Indeed,channeling has a significant impact on the transport of energetic ions in crystals due to the large critical angle at low ion energies,thus being relevant for any FIB-application.Consequently,the obtained sputter yield clearly differs from amorphous materials;therefore,it is recommended not to rely only on,e.g.,ion distribution depths predicted by standard monte-Carlo(mC)algorithms for amorphous materials.

The gastrointestinal tract(GIT)health impacts animal productivity.The poultry microbiome has functions which range from protection against pathogens and nutrients production,to host immune system maturation.Fluctuations in the microbiome have also been linked to prevailing environmental conditions.Healthy poultry birds possess a natural resistance to infection.However,the exploration of environmental impacts and other relevant factors on poultry growth and health have been underplayed.Since good performance and growth rate are central to animal production,the host-microbiome relationship remains integral.Prior to the emergence of metagenomic techniques,conventional methods for poultry microbiome studies were used and were low-throughput and associated with insufficient genomic data and high cost of sequencing.Fortunately,the advent of high-throughput sequencing platforms have circumvented some of these shortfalls and paved the way for increased studies on the poultry gut microbiome diversity and functions.Here,we give an up-to-date review on the impact of varied environments on microbiome profile,as well as microbiome engineering and microbiome technology advancements.It is hoped that this paper will provide invaluable information that could guide and inspire further studies on the lingering pertinent questions about the poultry microbiome.

Inflatable penile prostheses are an important tool in the treatment of medically refractory erectile dysfunction.One of the major complications associated with these prostheses is infections,which ultimately require device explanation and placement of a new device.Over the past several decades,significant work has been done to reduce infection rates and optimize treatment strategies to reduce patient morbidity.This article reviews the current state of knowledge surrounding penile prosthesis infections,with attention to the evidence for methods to prevent infection and best practices for device reimplantation.

Predicting Fintech Innovation Adoption:the mediator Role of Social Norms and Attitudes

Digital innovation is challenging the traditional way of offering financial services to companies;the so-called Fintech phenomenon refers to startups that use the latest technologies to offer innovative financial services.Within the framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB)and the Theory of Reasoned Action(TRA),the primary purpose of this paper is to develop a causal-predictive analysis of the relationship between Subjective Norms,Attitudes,and Perceived Behavioral Control with the Intention to Use and Behavioral Use of the Fintech services by companies.Partial Least Squares Structural Equation modeling methodology was used with data collected from a survey of 300 companies.Our findings support the TRA and TPB models and confirm their robustness in predicting companies’intention and use of Fintech services.Financial technology innovators must understand the processes involved in users’adoption to design sound strategies that increase the viability of their services.Studying the antecedents of behavioral intention to adopt Fintech services can greatly help understand the pace of adoption,allowing these players to attract and retain customers better.This study contributes to the literature by formulating and validating TPB to predict Fintech adoption,and its findings provide useful information for banks and Fintech companies and lead to an improvement in organizational performance management in formulating marketing strategies.

Comparative analysis of different static mixers performance by CFD technique:An innovative mixer

The flow and mixing behavior of two miscible liquids has been studied in an innovative static mixer by using CFD,with Reynolds numbers ranging from 20 to 160.The performance of the new mixer is compared with those of Kenics,SmX,and Komax static mixers.The pressure drop ratio(Z-factor),coefficient of variation(CoV),and extensional efficiency(α)features have been used to evaluate power consumption,distributive mixing,and dispersive mixing performances,respectively,in all mixers.The model is firstly validated based on experimental data measured for the pressure drop ratio and the coefficient of variation.CFD results are consistent with measured data and those obtained by available correlations in the literature.The new mixer shows a superior mixing performance compared to the other mixers.

Dissipation of chlorpyrifos, pendimethalin, and thiophanate-methyl pesticides in compost based-versus peat-moss based-biomixture of biobeds

Biobed is a smart bioremediation system used to treat point-source pesticide contamination.Biomixture is the main component of biobeds,and pesticide dissipation is affected by its composition.This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of compost-based(C)versus peat-moss-based(P)biomixtures of biobeds on tested pesticide dissipation.Three concentrations(25,50,and 75 mg/kg)of chlorpyrifos,pendimethalin,and thiophanate methyl were added separately and as a mix to both biomixtures C and P.Our data showed the effect of biomixture type on the dissipation of the tested pesticides.For chlorpyrifos,its dissipation rate in biomixture P was more rapid than that in biomixture C.This result was confirmed by the mineralization kinetic experiment,since 25%of the initial ^(14)C-chlorpyrifos concentration accumulated in the form ^(14)CO_(2) in biomixture P compared to only 14%in biomixture C.In addition,the chlorpyrifos dissipation rate was influenced by the initial concentration when applied individually in biomixture P.In contrast,biomixture C was more effective at pendimethalin dissipation than biomixture P,since>76%of pendimethalin was dissipated in biomixture C versus 67%in biomixture P at the same incubation time.For thiophanate-methyl,the abilities of both biomixtures C and P were similar and less efficient than those of the other tested pesticides.The addition of the three tested pesticides to biomixture C only had a positive effect on both chlorpyrifos and thiophanate-methyl dissipation,while pendimethalin dissipation was similar when applied separately or as a mix.microbial activity was stimulated by the addition of separately or mixed pesticides to biomixtures C and P as measured by dehydrogenase activity.
