NIOSH ground control safety research program at Spokane,Washington,is exploring applications of photogrammetry to rock mass and support monitoring. This paper describes two ways photogrammetric techniques are being used. First,photogrammetric data of laboratory testing is being used to correlate energy input and support deformation. This information can be used to infer remaining support toughness after ground deformation events. This technique is also demonstrated in a field ***,field photogrammetric data is compared to crackmeter data from a deep underground *** were found to average 8 mm,but have produced results within 0.2 mm of true displacement,as measured by crackmeters. Application of these techniques consists of monitoring overall fault activity by monitoring multiple points around the crackmeter. A case study is provided in which a crackmeter is clearly shown to have provided insufficient information regarding overall fault ground *** is proving to be a useful ground monitoring tool due to its unobtrusiveness and ease of use.

Particulate matter in ambient air constitutes a complex mixture of fine and ultrafine particles composed of various chemical compounds including metals, ions, and organics. A multidisciplinary approach was developed by studying physico-chemical characteristics and mechanisms involved in the toxicity of particulate atmospheric pollution. PM0.3-2.s and PM2.5 including ultrafine particles were sampled in Dunkerque, a French industrialized seaside city. PM samples were characterized from a chemical and toxicological point of view. Physico-chemical characterization evidenced that PM2.5 comes from several sources： natural ones, such as soil resuspension and marine sea-salt emissions, as well as anthropogenic ones, such as shipping traffic, road traffic, and industrial activities. Human BEAS-2B tung cells were exposed to PM0.3-2.5, or to the Extractable Organic Matter （EOM） of PM0.3-2.5 and PM2.s. These exposures induced several mechanisms of action implied in the genotoxicity, such as oxidative DNA adducts and DNA Damage Response. The toxicity of PM-EOM was higher for the sample including the ultrafine fraction （PM2.5） containing also higher concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These results evidenced the maj.r role of organic compounds in the toxicity of PM.

Microalgae have great, yet relatively untapped potential as a highly productive crop for the production of animal and aquaculture feed, biofuels, and nutraceutical products. Compared to conventional terrestrial crops they have a very fast growth rate and can be produced on non-arable land. During microalgae cultivation, carbon dioxide(CO_2) is supplied as the carbon source for photosynthesising microalgae. There are a number of potential CO_2 supplies including air, flue gas and purified CO_2. In addition, several strategies have been applied to the delivery of CO_2 to microalgae production systems, including directly bubbling CO_2-rich gas, microbubbles, porous membrane spargers and non-porous membrane contactors. This article provides a comparative analysis of the different CO_2 supply and delivery strategies and how they relate to each other.

The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa commonly causes chronic and ultimately deadly lung infections in individuals with the genetic disease cystic fibrosis （CF）. P. aeruginosa is metabolically diverse; it displays a remarkable ability to adapt to and successfully occupy almost any niche, including the ecologically complex CF lung. These P. aeruginosa lung infections are a fascinating example of microbial evolution within a ＂natural＂ ecosystem. Initially, P. aeruginosa shares the lung niche with a plethora of other microorganisms and is vulnerable to antibiotic challenges. Over time, adaptive evolution leads to certain commonly-observed phenotypic changes within the P. aeruginosa population, some of which render it resistant to antibiotics and apparently help it to out-compete the other species that co-habit the airways. Improving genomics techniques continue to elucidate the evolutionary mechanisms of P. aeruginosa within the CF lung and will hopefully identify new vulnerabilities in this robust and versatile pathogen.

With the recent advances in detection and treatment of cancer,there is an increasing emphasis on the efficacy and safety aspects of cancer *** therapy is a common treatment for a wide variety of cancers,either alone or in combination with other *** radiation inj.ry to the gastrointestinal tract is a frequent side effect of radiation therapy and a considerable proportion of patients suffer acute or chronic gastrointestinal symptoms as a *** side effects often cause morbidity and may in some cases lower the efficacy of radiotherapy *** inj.ry to the gastrointestinal tract can be minimised by either of two strategies:technical strategies which aim to physically shift radiation dose away from the normal intestinal tissues,and biological strategies which aim to modulate the normal tissue response to ionising radiation or to increase its resistance to *** considerable improvement in the safety of radiotherapy treatment has been achieved through the use of modern optimised planning and delivery techniques,biological techniques may offer additional further *** agents have been used to prevent or minimize the severity of gastrointestinal inj.ry induced by ionising radiation exposure,including biological,chemical and pharmacological *** this review we aim to discuss various technical strategies to prevent gastrointestinal inj.ry during cancer radiotherapy,examine the different therapeutic options for acute and chronic gastrointestinal radiation inj.ry and outline some examples of research directions and considerations for prevention at a pre-clinical level.

New,more stringent environmental requirements for electrical insulation liquids have led to the development of novel,more environment‐friendly liquid *** fluids,introduced several decades ago,provide a viable alternative to traditional mineral insu-lating *** order to expand the practical applications of these novel dielectric fluids,their dielectric and electrical parameters should be *** of the critical pa-rameters that affects and governs the development of pre‐breakdown processes in insulating liquids is the mobility of charge *** the present paper,the mobility of charge carriers in commercially available synthetic and natural insulating ester fluids and in a mineral insulating oil were obtained using two methods,the time of flight and the space charge saturation current *** mobility was obtained for a wide range of electrical field *** was found that the mobility of charge carriers is greater in the mineral oil than in both,the natural and synthetic,ester *** was also established that the mobility is higher for higher applied electric *** results of this work will help in characterizing liquid dielectrics and in optimizing high‐voltage systems in which liquid dielectrics,including natural and synthetic ester fluids,are used.
