Objective: Cinobufotalin (CINO), a cardiotonic steroid (CTS) or bufadienolide, is extracted from the skin secretions of giant toads and is utilized in traditional Chinese medicine (Chan Su). CINO has been used as a cardiotonic, diuretic and a hemostatic agent. Recently, CINO has been shown to inhibit lung cancer cell function and has been imp.icated in several other disease p.ocesses. In this study, we p.rsued the p.tential anticancer ap.lication of CINO using the ovarian tumor cell line SK-OV-3. Study Design: We evaluated the effect of CINO on cultures of SK-OV-3. Cells were treated with 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 μM CINO. Cell p.oliferation, migration, invasion, and viability were measured using commercially available kits. Cell cycle p.ogression was evaluated by a Cell Cycle p.ase Determination Kit. Ap.p.osis was evaluated by an Ap.p.otic Blebs Assay Kit;cell cycle arrest and ap.p.otic signaling were determined by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis. Results: CINO at ≥ 0.5 μM inhibited SKOV-3 cell p.oliferation, migration, and invasion (p.p.p.rcentage of S p.ase cells in group. treated with CINO at 0.5 μM. CINO at ≥ 0.5 μM down regulated exp.ession of p.oliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (p.NA) and caused cell death. Conclusion: This data demonstrates that CINO imp.irs SK-OV-3 cell function via cell cycle arrest and ap.p.otic signaling, suggesting CINO be further investigated as a novel anti-ovarian cancer agent.

Biosorp.ion of Trivalent Chromium from Aqueous Solution by Red Seaweed p.lysip.onia nigrescens

This p.p.r p.esents the biosorp.ion of chromium onto red seaweed (p.lysip.onia nigrescens). Batch mode exp.riments were p.rformed to determine exp.rimental p.rameters affecting sorp.ion p.ocess such as p., contact time, initial metal ion concentration and biomass dosage. The Cr(III) sorp.ion was dep.ndent on p. and adsorbent dosage. The adsorp.ion kinetic data could be fitted with a p.eudo-second-order model and the equilibrium data with a Langmuir model. The maximum sorp.ion cap.city was of 16.11 mg/g at p. 4 and 10 g/L of biomass dosage. 0.1 M H2SO4 showed good desorp.ion efficiency (>80%). Sp.ctroscop. analysis showed that Cr(III) sorp.ion on seaweed was mainly through the ion-exchange mechanism. This rep.rt indicates that p. nigrescens is an effective and economical sorbent for removal of Cr(III) from wastewaters.

Effectiveness of a Group.Exercise Class vs. Home Exercise p.ogram as a Follow-up.to p.ysical Therap. for Older Adults with High Fall Risk

Background: The Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) is a center in Cuba devoted to the research, develop.ent and manufacturing of biotechnological p.oducts. CIMAvax?EGF is a vaccine for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer p.tients (NSCL). p.rp.se: The aim of this work is to evaluate the effects of some p.tential p.ognostic factors on the overall survival of p.tients treated with CIMAvax?EGF vaccine, based on data collected in a p.ase II and a p.ase III clinical trials. Methods: The stratified Cox regression model is used to evaluate the effects of these p.ognostic factors, based on sep.rate analysis for each trial, and on the combined data from both trials. Results: p.tients with p.rformance status 0 or 1, with IV stage of tumor and male under 60 years obtain more benefit in terms of overall survival if they receive CIMAvax?EGF. Conclusions: Vaccinated group.has a better p.rformance if p.tients have a p.rformance status 0 or 1, stage IV and age under 60 years. These p.ognostic factors influence overall survival in a p.sitive way for those p.tients that received CIMAvax?EGF.

Cymbidium sp. has several ornamental, medicinal and cosmetic uses. Essential oils were obtained through extraction by hydrodistillation of flower and p.dicellate ovary. The chromatograp.ic p.ofile was obtained by thin layer chromatograp.y (TLC), combined with gas chromatograp.y-mass sp.ctrometry (GC/MS), for the identification and relative quantification of various substances in three samp.es from the orchid (flower, p.dicellate ovary and aqueous residue). With TLC, five comp.unds were identified in the flower, with the most abundant being terp.neol, linalool and zingiberene, and five in the p.dicellate ovary, with borneol, cineole, and β-bisabolene being in the greatest concentration, while for the aqueous residue, the most abundant was geraniol. Using GC/MS, 25 volatile comp.nents associated with the flower were identified, of which the most abundant were linalool (22.92%), 4-methyl-p.enol (15.07%) and p.Menth-1-en-8-ol (12.32%). In p.dicellate ovaries, 13 comp.nents were identified, with the most abundant being 4-methyl-p.enol (31.24%), bicycle [4.4.0] dec-1-ene, 2-isop.op.l-5-methyl-9-methylene-(17.74%) and 2-hexanone (10.24%), while in the aqueous residue 18 comp.nents were found, with the most abundant being 4-methyl-p.enol (18.71%) and 2- cyclohexen-1-ol (14.60%).

A p.lot study on maternal oral health and birth weight of twins

Background: Oral health has been imp.icated in low birth weight or p.eterm birth. However, this relationship.has not yet been studied in twins. We investigated whether maternal oral health was associated with the birth weights of twins by a cross-sectional study conducted at Helsinki University Central Hosp.tal. Methods: Utilizing linear mixed effect models to recognize the correlation between twins from the same mothers and the indep.ndence between different mothers. 40 birth weights of twins were modeled as main outcomes. In model 1, p.or p.riodontal health (p.H) was fitted as the main exp.anatory variable. In model 2, p.esence of non-sp.cific oral mucositis (NSOM) was fitted as the main p.edictor. Results: In model 1, babies from mothers with p.H weighed ap.roximately 158.2 grams less than babies of mothers without p.H. However, this association was not statistically significant (p.= 0.11). When a stricter criterion for p.H (3 sites of p.cket dep.h > 4 mm) was used, p.value decreased to 0.09 showing a dose resp.nse to p.H. In model 2, mothers with NSOM had babies weighing 224.9 grams less than mothers without these lesions. This was nearly significant (p.= 0.08). Conclusion: Although not significant, the results from this small data of twins suggest that maternal oral health may be associated with birth weight of twin neonates. Our results are ap.rop.iate to generate hyp.thesis for future studies.

Cell therap. has shown beneficial effects on ventricular function and tissue regeneration in p.tients with acute and chronic myocardial infarction, although with diverse grades of variability in the results, p.ssibly by p.op.rtion, subtyp. and cell cycle status. Objective: Identify and p.enotyp.cally characterize, via CXCR4 and SDF-1 exp.ession, the bone marrow cell subp.p.lations that are mobilized into the bloodstream in p.tients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Acute Ischemia (AI) such as acute angina and Chronic Ischemia (CI) such as chronic stable angina, and also determine the cell cycle status of these cells. Method: p.tients with AMI and AI were recruited in the ICCU, and p.tients with CI in the dep.rtments of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. The quantification of cellular subp.p.lations was made by cytofluorometry with a FACS caliburcyto fluorometry (Becton Dickinson) with sp.cific FITC-labeled anti human monoclonal antibodies against CD34, CD133, CD117, CD48, CXCR4, SDF-1 and Ki67 (Becton Dickinson). Serum concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 were determined by a sequential solid p.ase chemiluminescent assay p.rformed in a SIEMENS IMMULITE 1000 Analyzer. Statistical analysis was made with the Sp.S version 20.0 for Windows. A p.value 3/ml) than that in AI (9.2 ± 1.3 × 103/ml) and CI (6.6 ± 1.1 × 103/ml) p.tients (p.p.= 0.22 to 0.39), but interestingly in AMI and AI p.tients, cells were CXCR4+ in almost half of these mobilized cells, although the p.op.rtion was significantly higher in AMI p.tients (46.8% ± 7.1% to 55.7% ± 6.3% vs 23% ± 1.6% to 28.4% ± 2.1%, p.= 0.03 to 0.05). A similar behavior was observed with the Ki67 antibody (29.9% ± 2.1% to 36.1% ± 6.3% vs 10% ± 1.2% to 24% ± 1.1%, p.= 0.001 to 0.05). Bivariate analysis of the results showed a significant correlation of the cell p.op.rtion in AMI but not in AI and CI p.tients (p.= 0.001 to 0.05;0.12 to 0.87 and 0.17 to 0.92 resp.ctively). The aim of this study was to identify the most frequent yeasts in the oral cavity of adult individuals without immune disorders and to associate the p.esence of these oral yeasts with different characteristics of each individual. Oral rinse samp.es were obtained from 96 healthy adults and cultured in Sabouraud dextrose agar media and CHROMagar. Yeasts were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 region of the 28 S rRNA gene. p.obable association among the socio-demograp.ic characteristics, body mass index, family and p.rsonal medical history,oral hygiene, tobacco and/or alcohol consump.ion habits and p.esence of oral fungi was analyzed. Contingency tables and logistic regression were emp.oyed to evaluate p.ssible relationship. between the p.esence of oral fungi and mixed colonization with these variables. 57.3% of the healthy individuals had oral yeasts and 21.8% had mixed colonization. The most p.evalent yeasts were Candida albicans(52%), C. p.rap.ilosis(17.9%), and ***(7.57%). Yeasts with most frequently mixed colonization were C. albicans and C. p.rap.ilosis. No relationship. were found among the variables analyzed. However, the p.esence of mixed colonization was related to the p.esence of dental p.ostheses(p.0.006), dental ap.aratuses(p.0.016) and O’Leary index(p.0.012). This is the first study that characterized oral yeasts in Colombian healthy individuals, determined the most p.evalent oral yeasts C. albicans, C. p.rap.ilosis and C. dublinensis and an association of mixed colonization with the use of dental p.ostheses and ap.ratology and p.or hygiene.
