Early life investment in antlers and body growth reflects adult performance in roe deer population under supplementary feeding conditions

Recent research has challenged the idea that cervid antlers are such costly traits,supporting the assertion early-life antler investment is an honest signal of adult phenotypic quality.However,inferences were made based on antler measurements while growing(velvet)and thus,studies on fully-formed clean antlers are needed to avoid possible bias caused by the inter-individual variation in antler growth phenology.We studied a semi-captive population of European roe deer inhabiting a sub-Mediterranean area(Valsemana research station)and living under optimal conditions(ad libitum food supply and veterinary care).Based on repeated measurements taken from 146 individuals,we assessed whether allocation to secondary sexual traits during early life affected body mass or antler development during adulthood.Furthermore,we evaluated which body measurements better predicted future male quality.Additionally,using 488 individuals,we described age-class-specific variation in male body measurements and assessed the decline in antler size between adult and senescent stages(i.***.magnitude of senescence).Results agree with the assertion that there is no negative effect of a high investment in antler during early life on adult antler size or body mass,but we suggest the use of clean antlers as a more robust and reliable measure.The variables that better predicted body mass during adulthood were yearling body mass and body size at 6 months.Antler score between 10 and 18 months resulted in the best indicator of adult antler size.Finally,we support the idea that the magnitude of senescence in antler size is smaller in environments with higher resource availability during winter.

Climate,female traits and population features as drivers of breeding timing in Mediterranean red deer populations

Understanding the factors that lead to variation in the timing of breeding in widespread species such as red deer(Cervus elaphus)is crucial to predict possible responses of wild populations to different climate scenarios.Here,we sought to further understand the causes of inter-annual variation in the reproduction timing of female deer in Mediterranean environments.An integrative approach was used to identify the relative importance of individual,population and climate traits in the date of conception of free-ranging deer,based on a dataset of 829 hinds culled during 12 years.We found that a population trait,density,was the most important factor explaining the variation in conception dates,with greater densities causing later conception dates.Body mass was the second in importance,with heavier females conceiving earlier than lighter ones.Almost equally important was the spring real bioclimatic index,a measure of plant productivity,causing later conception dates in the least productive springs(drier and hotter).Another climatic component,the end of summer drought,showed that the sooner the autumn arrives(greater rainfalls and cooler temperatures)the earlier the conception dates.Interestingly,age class was found to be a minor factor in determining conception date.Only older females(≥10 years old)conceived significantly later,suggesting reproductive senescence.This study highlights not only the importance of population and individual traits but also the influence of climatic parameters on the deer reproductive cycle in Mediterranean environments,giving valuable insight into how reproductive phenology may respond to seasonality and global climate changes.

Distribution of DNA damage in the human sperm nucleus:implications of the architecture of the sperm head

The sperm nucleus is prone to sustain DNA damage before and after ejaculation.Distribution of the damage is not homogeneous,and the factors determining differential sensitivity among nuclear regions have not yet been characterized.Human sperm chromatin contains three structural domains,two of which are considered the most susceptible to DNA damage:the histone bound domain,harboring developmental related genes,and the domain associated with nuclear matrix proteins.Using a quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qPCR)approach,we analyzed the number of lesions in genes homeobox A3(HOXA3),homeobox B5(HOXB 5),sex-determining region Y(SRY)-box 2(SOX2),β-GLOBIN,rDNA 18S,and rDNA 28S in human sperm after ultraviolet irradiation(400μW cm−2,10 min),H2O2treatment(250 mmol l−1,20 min),and cryopreservation,which showed differential susceptibility to genetic damage.Differential vulnerability is dependent on the genotoxic agent and independent of the sperm nuclear proteins to which the chromatin is bound and of accessibility to the transcription machinery.Immunodetection of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine(8-OHdG)showed that the highest level of oxidation was observed after H2O2treatment.The distribution of oxidative lesions also differed depending on the genotoxic agent.8-OHdG did not colocalize either with histone 3(H3)or with type IIα+βtopoisomerase(TOPO IIα+β)after H2O2treatment but matched perfectly with peroxiredoxin 6(PRDX6),which is involved in H2O2metabolism.Our study reveals that the characteristics of the sperm head domains are responsible for access of the genotoxicants and cause differential degree of damage to nuclear areas,whereas chromatin packaging has a very limited relevance.The histone-enriched genes analyzed cannot be used as biomarkers of oxidative DNA damage.

Not only myelination: the immune-inflammatory functions of oligodendrocytes

Oligodendrocytes(OLs)are highly specialized cells of the central nervous system(CNS).Their primary and most investigated role is to form myelin,a multilamellar fatty membrane that enwraps axons ensuring their insulation and the saltatory conduction of nerve impulses.The formation of myelin is a complex process during which the OL precursor cells(OPCs,also known as NG2-glia)become mature OLs through a highly regulated program of differentiation.In addition,OPCs persist in the adult grey and white matter parenchyma,representing approximately 6%of the total number of CNS cells.Beyond their role in myelin generation and turn-over,it is now clear that OPCs have the capability to control tissue homeostasis and to sense and react to inflammation which characterizes many neurological diseases.

Alzheimer’s disease key facts:Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease with no available effective treatment.It is possible to distinguish an early-onset AD that affects a limited number of subjects of young age,and a sporadic or late-onset form of the disease that affects the vast majority of subjects who are diagnosed with AD.As life expectancy has increased considerably over the past century,the number of people diagnosed with AD has grown exponentially.So,AD and AD-related pathologies represent a huge social and economic burden.The number of individuals waiting for effective disease-modifying therapy is impressive.It is estimated that 50 million people worldwide live with dementia,the majority of these cases are caused by AD(World Health Organization,2021).In the US about 6 million individuals are living with AD,and more than 9 million people are in EU member states(OECD and European Union,2020).The costs of health care and long-term care are substantial.Given this massive societal impact,enormous efforts have been made to understand the pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease with the hope of identifying new targets and,therefore,developing effective drugs.

The contribution of astrocytes to obesity-associated metabolic disturbances

Obesity is a worldwide health,economic and social concern,despite efforts made to counteract the spreading wave of eating and nourishment-associated disorders.The review aims to show how the glial cells,astrocytes,contribute to the central regulation of appetite and energy metabolism.The hypothalamus is the brain center responsible for nutrients and nutritional hormone sensing,signal processing,and execution of metabolic and behavioral responses,directed at sustaining energy homeostasis.The astrocytes are endowed with receptors,transporters and enzymatic machinery responsible for glucose,lactate,fatty acids,ketone bodies,as well as leptin or ghrelin transport and metabolism,and that render them supporters and partners for neurons in governing the brain and body energy intake and expenditure.However,the role of astrocytes associated with brain energy metabolism reaches far beyond simple fuel contingent-they contribute to cognitive performance.The cognitive decline which often accompanies high fat-and/or high-calorie diets and correlates with neuroinflammation and astrogliosis,is a major concern.The last two decades of research enabled us to acknowledge the astroglia in obesity-associated dysfunctions and to investigate astrocytes as contributors to the pathology,as well as targets for therapy.

Chinese Sources for AfterWards:From Premodern Poetry,Paintings,and Medical Texts to Modern Novels,Film,and Documentaries

This paper focuses on Chinese sources suggested for a narrative medicine(NM)program,called AfterWards.Dr Lauren Small established AfterWards in 2014 and has been coordinating it since out of the Pediatrics Department at Johns Hopkins Medicine.In early 2019,she started giving a series of lectures and workshops about AfterWards to Chinese medical educators and clinicians in Beijing and Shanghai.She created an AfterWards Facilitator’s Guide based on Western-language sources for workshop participants.She also started to organize with Jiang Yuhong(Peking Union Medical College)a workshop for Chinese colleagues to be held at Johns Hopkins Medicine in October 2019.They invited the author to participate.The idea was hatched then to develop Chinese source materials following the AfterWards structure for an updated Facilitator’s Guide that Dr Small had initially written.A typical one-hour AfterWards session consists of a specific five-part structure:a literary text or artwork,an associated theme,discussion topics,a writing exercise,and shared reflection.While the content of the program always changes from session to session,the basic structure remains the same.This paper summarizes the types of Chinese sources and their related narrative-medicine themes that were originally selected for inclusion in the updated AfterWards Facilitator’s Guide intended for Chinese colleagues.These sources about coping with sick family members,aging,and illness ranged from the textual(classical Chinese poems on aging and diagnostic forms for training students)and visual(premodern Chinese paintings and murals of medical encounters)to the fictive(novels)and performative(contemporary Asian-American film in English and Chinese-language film and documentaries).

Grasping Heaven and Earth(Qian Kun Zai Wo):The Body-as-Technology in Classical Chinese Medicine

Shifting focus from the patient’s body to the healer’s body,this essay focuses on how Chinese physicians instrumentalized their bodies to heal(ie,body-as-technology)and their hands to think with(ie,hand-memory techniques or simply,hand mnemonics).When physicians used their hands to memorize concepts related to clinical practice,calculate with time variables,and carry out ritual gestures intended to reduce risk,improve fortune,and even cure,their hands became extensions of their minds.This essay has three parts that follow the discovery process of the author’s research on hand-memory techniques found in Chinese medical texts.The first part“Divination and Revelation”explains the significance of how the author first learned about Chinese divination practices that used hand mnemonics.The second part“Original Frame”introduces the scholarship on arts of memory in Europe that informed interpretations of the earliest hand mnemonics found in Chinese medical texts.The third part“Expanded Frame”deploys some concepts from cognitive science to help situate Chinese medical hand mnemonics more broadly as an example of extended cognition.The essay concludes with an important distinction:sometimes Chinese healers’hands were used separately from their bodies to think through things and sometimes hand and body had to be integrated in order for the healer’s body-as-technology to act as a therapeutically effective instrument.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that starts many years before the onset of cognitive symptoms.Identifying novel biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease has the potential for patient risk stratification,early diagnosis,and disease monitoring in response to therapy.A novel class of biomarkers is extracellular vesicles given their sensitivity and specificity to specific diseases.In addition,extracellular vesicles can be used as novel biological therapeutics given their ability to efficiently and functionally deliver therapeutic cargo.This is critical given the huge unmet need for novel treatment strategies for Alzheimer’s disease.This review summarizes and discusses the most recent findings in this field.

Insights into adsorbent tortuosity across aqueous adsorption systems

Pore network,pore connectivity,and the resulting effective adsorbate pore diffusivity within an adsorbent are critical physical considerations in mass transport modeling of aqueous adsorption.Tied to these three adsorbent features are the adsorbent tortuosity and tortuosity factor concepts.These concepts encompass the collective hindrance to intra-adsorbent adsorbate transport arising because of a disorderly adsorbent porous topology.It is crucial for materials scientists,chemists,chemical engineers,and water treatment specialists to understand the complex and variable connections among adsorbate chemistry,adsorbent chemistry,adsorbent porosity,pore shape,size,and tortuosity,pore wall effect,adsorbate-adsorbent interactions,and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions in competitively contaminated aqueous environments.Adsorbent tortuosity has been sporadically studied in aqueous adsorption models.Despite the small population of these studies,insightful observations and inferences have been reported.However,as it appears,no review has been published to compile,compare,and contrast these aspects.Hence,this review concisely brings up those observations and interpretations around adsorbent tortuosity for aqueous adsorption systems.The notion of an adsorbent's tortuosity being single-valued is argued to be imprecise.Finally,perspectives are aired on possible research and development directions for elucidating the dynamic attributes of adsorbent tortuosity and applying them in real-scale adsorption-oriented water purification.The data acquired by filling in these research gaps can enable the design of adsorbents more adapted for real-scale water purification.
