Habitat selection is a dynamic process that depends on many environmental variables that can vary with weather *** is important because,within a context of global change,extreme weather events,such as severe droughts,are predicted to become more *** examined the patterns of microhabitat selection and underground movements(using PIT-tag telemetry)of a strictly fossorial reptile,the north African checkboard amphisbaenian Trogonophis wiegmanni,during the summer drought *** aimed to test whether changes in strategies of habitat use and movements could allow this amphisbaenian to cope with unfavorable *** found that during the summer drought period,*** did not use the microhabitats in relationship to their availability,but particularly selected sites with high abundance of rocks but also areas under a high cover of bushes,where environmental conditions were more *** also found,using PIT-tag telemetry,that the numbers of *** individuals located under rocks and their activity(number of days with movements)decreased largely in ***,the animals were not entirely inactive,but,especially males were active below the ground under bushes and made some relatively long underground hidden movements between favorable areas.

K2Ti6O13 whiskers were synthesized by conventional sol-gel method, sono-chemical assisted and microwave assisted sol-gel method in order to obtain catalysts with different particle sizes and to modify their optical, textural and electrochemical properties. These modifications improved their photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution and CO2 photo-reduction. Long K2Ti6O13 whiskers prepared by ultrasound assisted sol-gel method are the most active photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction using pure water as reactant (U-SG, 10,065 μmol g^-1). In contrast, an opposite behavior was observed using a mixture of ethanol-water, where the highest activity was achieved by the shortest and less crystalline K2Ti6O13 whiskers (C-SG, 3,2871 μmol g^-1). In case of CO2 photo-reduction, long whiskers that were also prepared by the sono-chemical assisted sol-gel method were the most active to transform CO2 to formaldehyde, methane, methanol and hydrogen. The eFB value of this catalyst is located very close to the potential for formaldehyde production and favors the selectivity to this organic product.

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(MCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of MCFA salts(DIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic escherichia coli(eTeC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the eTeC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pn d 8 PI(eTeC F4 trial).When analyzing the entire colonic microbiota(16 S rRnA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the eTeC F4 challenge,DIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IeL)counts were lowered by DIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With eTeC F4,the IeL counts were higher with DIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

The society in the digital transformation era demands new decision schemes such as e-democracy or based on social *** novel decision schemes require the participation of many experts/decision makers/stakeholders in the decision *** a result,large-scale group decision making(LSGDM)has attracted the attention of many researchers in the last decade and many studies have been conducted in order to face the challenges associated with the ***,this paper aims at reviewing the most relevant studies about LSGDM,identifying the most profitable research trends and analyzing them from a critical point of *** do so,the Web of Science database has been consulted by using different *** these results a total of 241 contributions were found and a selection process regarding language,type of contribution and actual relation with the studied topic was then carried *** 87 contributions finally selected for this review have been analyzed from four points of view that have been highly remarked in the topic,such as the preference structure in which decision-makers’opinions are modeled,the group decision rules used to define the decision making process,the techniques applied to verify the quality of these models and their applications to real world problems ***,a critical analysis of the main limitations of the existing proposals is ***,taking into account these limitations,new research lines for LSGDM are proposed and the main challenges are stressed out.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a common degenerative vascular disease with a prevalence up to 8% in males over 60 years of age.1 This is a complex disorder characterized by permanent and focal dilation of abdominal aorta that exceeds at least 50% of the normal diameter. In these patients, the aortic diameter progressively expands boosted by smoking and aging as major risk factors. Unfortunately, aneurysm growth increases the risk of aortic rupture, a life-threatening emergency that carries a mortality rate of 80%. Despite the increasing effort of the scientific community to identify therapeutic strategies for AAA, there are currently no pharmacological tools that ameliorate aneurysm expansion, while the underlying mechanisms involved in this disease are not completely understood.

Sponges are known for their symbiotic associations with bacteria and to a lesser extent with *** has been argued that the association between fungi and sponges is not truly symbiotic,and fungal presence is ***,a vertically transmitted endosymbiotic yeast has been observed by transmission electron microscopy in sponges of the genus *** work was focused on documenting the presence of yeasts associated with marine sponges from Puerto *** samples were taken from healthy mature colonies of Ircinia strobilina,Tedania ignis,and Chondrilla caribensis.A total of 36 yeast morphotypes were isolated and analysed by sequencing the nuclear ribosomal ITS *** cerevisiae,was isolated from all the samples,comprising the first report of this yeast as a common inhabitant in marine *** yeasts isolated include the halophilic black yeast,Hortaea werneckii,and an unidentified species belongs to the Sporidiobolales(Basidiomycota).The high isolation frequency of *** from our sponge samples supports the possibility that Saccharomyces cerevisiae as an active member of the sponges’microbial community.

Background It is necessary to determine the implications for managing forest stands using variable retention harvesting for maintaining carbon and for calculating the effects of different harvesting practices on above-and below-ground carbon balance in forest *** this context,forest carbon management has gained more attention among managers and policy-makers during recent *** aim of this study was to determine carbon pool dynamics in different forest ecosystem components after variable retention harvesting(VRH)to characterize the ecological stability and quantify the recovery rate through the years-after-harvesting(YAH).Methods Carbon pool compartmentalization of 14 different components was determined in 60 harvested and primary unmanaged forests during the first 18 YAH in Tierra del Fuego(Argentina).We compared them using uni-and multi-variate methods,relativizing the outputs with primary unmanaged *** We determined the effectiveness to retain carbon components in post-harvested stands under different retention strategies(aggregated ***).The balance among carbon pool components changed between managed and unmanaged stands across the YAH,and was directly related to the impact *** retention improved the ecological stability of the harvested areas,where the below-ground components were more stable than the above-ground *** recovery rate was directly related to the post-harvesting natural dynamics of the *** studied period was not enough to fully recover the C levels of primary unmanaged for-ests,but VRH showed advantages to increase the C pools in the managed *** Promoting VRH can improve sustainable forestry at the landscape level and in the long term,generating positive synergies with biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem *** study provides important new insights into forest carbon management,in particular to setting standards in carbon projects and sets the ground
