Multifocal motor neuropathy （MMN） is a rare,.focal,inflammatory,demyelinating disease of the peripheral nerves with pure motor involvementJ MMN is clinically characterized by slowly progressive,asymmetric,distal,upper limb predominant weakness,in the absence of sensory disturbances） Weakness is usually multifocal and connected to a distinct motor nerve,such as the musculocutaneous nerve resulting in biceps weakness,the posterior interosseus nerve resulting in finger drop,the median,ulnar,or radial nerve resulting in dexterity problems or grip weakness,or the peroneal nerve resulting in a foot drop.Onset of clinical manifestations is between 20 and 50 years of age.The prevalence of MMN is reported as 1-2 per 100 000.2 MMN is three times more frequent in men as compared to women.

Although the plant kingdom provides an enormous diversity of metabolites with potentially beneficial applications for humankind,a large fraction of these metabolites and their biosynthetic pathways remain unknown.Resolving metabolite structures and their biosynthetic pathways is key to gaining biological understanding andto allow metabolic engineering.In orderto retrieve novel biosynthetic genes involved in specialized metabolism,we developed a novel untargeted method designated as qualitative trait GWAs(QT-GWAS)that subjects qualitative metabolic traits to a genome-wide association study,while the conventional metabolite GWAS(mGWAS)mainly considers the quantitative variation of metabolites.As a proof of the validity of QT-GWAS,23 and 15of the retrieved associations identified in Arabidopsis thaliana by QTGWAS and mGWAS,respectively,were supported by previous research.Furthermore,seven genemetabolite associations retrieved by QT-GWAS were confirmed in this study through reverse genetics combined with metabolomics and/or in vitro enzyme assays.As such,we established that CYTOCHROME P450706A5(CYP706A5)is involved in the biosynthesis of chroman derivatives,UDP-GLYCOSYLTRANSFERASE 76C3(UGT76C3)is able tohexosylate guanine in vitro and in planta,and SULFOTRANSFERASE 202B1(SULT202B1)catalyzes the sulfation of neolignans in vitro.Collectively,our study demonstrates that the untargeted QT-GWAS method can retrieve valid gene-metabolite associations at the level of enzyme-encoding genes,even new associations that cannot be found by the conventional mGwAs,providing a new approach for dissecting qualitative metabolic traits.

BACKGROUND The rising number of people using methamphetamine leads to an increasing need for treatment options for this patient group.Evidence-based research on the efficacy of treatment programs for methamphetamine users is limited.Due to specific characteristics of methamphetamine users,the question arises whether established treatment methods for individuals using other substances can be effective for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence as well.We hypothesize that there are significant differences between the two groups that may affect the effectiveness of treatment and worsen the prognosis of treatment outcomes for methamphetamine users compared to consumers of other substances.AIM To investigate potential differences in cognitive functioning and psychopathology between methamphetamine users and other substance users and possible correlations with treatment outcomes.METHODS A total of 110 subjects were recruited for an observational,longitudinal study from a German inpatient addiction treatment center:55 patients with methamphetamine dependence and 55 patients with dependence of other substances(“OS group”).Both groups were examined at beginning(baseline)and end of treatment(after 6 mo)with regard to treatment retention,craving,cognitive functioning,psychosocial resources,personality traits,depression,and other psychiatric symptoms.Instruments used were Raven’s IQ test,Mannheimer craving scale,cognitrone cognitive test battery,NEO personality factors inventory,Hamilton depression scale,Becks depression inventory,and a symptom checklist.The statistical methods used were χ^(2)-test,t-test and multiple mixed ANOVAs.RESULTS A total drop-out rate of 40%(methamphetamine-group:36.4%;OS-group:43.6%)was observed without significant differences between groups.At baseline,methamphetamine-group subjects significantly differed from OS-group individuals in terms of a lower intelligence quotient,fewer years of education,slower working speed,and decreased working accuracy,as well as less cannabinoid and cocaine use.M

Are Central and Western Chinese Provinces Catching up with the East？ An Empirical Analysis of Convergence Processes across China

Since the Reform and Opening-up policy had been implemented in 1978, China's Mainland has experienced significant economic growth, with GDP rising on an annual average of about 10%. However, this growth miracle was far from being evenly distributed across space. It is, therefore, the aim of this paper to study the evolution of spatial disparities in economic development across the country between 1993 and 2012, a period which is characterized by all provinces having access to international markets and being open for international investors. We seek to answer the question of whether Central and Western Chinese provinces were catching up with the East. We define ＇catching up＇ as a growing similarity among spatial units. Convergence processes might manifest in four dimensions, including （1） the spatial allocation of employment, value added generation and the fixed capital stock, （2） forms of technical change, （3） productivity patterns, and （4） income distribution. Results show that persistent phases of convergence appeared. However, in some cases the catching up of China＇s less developed parts with the flourishing East was limited to only a few Western and Central Chinese provinces. A high degree of path-dependency in economic development prevented catching up from taking place in a more uniform manner.

The drought-tolerant grass Brachypodium distachyon is an emerging model species for temperate grasses and cereal crops. To explore the usefulness of this species for drought studies, a reproducible in vivo drought assay was developed. Spontaneous soil drying led to a 45% reduction in leaf size, and this was mostly due to a decrease in cell expansion, whereas cell division remained largely unaffected by drought. To investigate the molecular basis of the observed leaf growth reduction, the third Brachypodium leaf was dissected in three zones, namely proliferation, expan- sion, and mature zones, and subjected to transcriptome analysis, based on a whole-genome tiling array. This approach allowed us to highlight that transcriptome profiles of different developmental leaf zones respond differently to drought. Several genes and functional processes involved in drought tolerance were identified. The transcriptome data suggest an increased energy availability in the proliferation zones, along with an up-regulation of sterol synthesis that may influ-ence membrane fluidity. This information may be used to improve the tolerance of temperate cereals to drought, which is undoubtedly one of the major environmental challenges faced by agriculture today and in the near future.

Objective The purpose of this study was to explore how women are recruited for group antenatal care(GANC)in primary care organisations(PCOs),what elements influence the behaviour of the recruiter,and what strategies recruiters use to encourage women to participate.Method Using a qualitative research design,we conducted 10 in-depth interviews with GANC facilitators working in PCOs.Selected constructs of the domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and the Theoretical Domains Framework helped to develop interview questions and raise awareness of important elements during interviews and thematic analyses.GANC facilitators working in multidisciplinary PCOs located in Brussels and Flanders(Belgium)were invited to participate in an interview.We purposively selected participants because of their role as GANC facilitators and recruiters.We recruited GANC facilitators up until data saturation and no new elements emerged.Result We identified that the recruitment process consists of four phases or actions:identification of needs and potential obstacles for participation;selection of potential participants;recruitment for GANC and reaction to response.Depending on the phase,determinants at the level of the woman,recruiter,organisation or environment have an influence on the recruitment behaviour.Conclusion Our study concludes that it takes two to tango for successful recruitment for GANC.Potential participants’needs and wishes are of importance,but the care providers’behaviour should not be underestimated.Therefore,successful recruitment may be improved when introducing a multidisciplinary recruitment plan consisting of specific strategies,as we suggest.

Men with obesity often present with low testosterone(T)and sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG)levels.Several mechanisms for this have been proposed,but as SHBG is secreted by hepatocytes and sex steroids undergo hepatic metabolization,this study investigates whether severity and histological components of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)are associated with sex steroid levels in obese men.This cross-sectional study included 80 obese men(age:46±11 years;body mass index:42.2±5.5 kg m^-2).Serum levels of total T and estradiol(E.)were measured using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectroscopy(LC/MS-MS)and SHBG and gonadotropins by immunoassay.Liver biopsies were evaluated using Steatosis.Activity,and Fibrosis scoring.Participants with steatohepatitis had similar median(1st quartile-3rd quartile)total T levels(7.6[5.0-11.0]nmol l^-1 vs 8.2[7.2-10.9]nmol l^-1;P=0.147),lower calculated free T(cFT)levels(148.9[122.9-188.8]pmol 1-1 s 199.5[157.3-237.6] pmol l^-1;P=0.006),and higher free E.T ratios(10.0[6.4-13.9]×10^-3 vs 7.1[5.7-10.7]×10^-3;P=0.026)compared to men with only nonalcoholic fatty liver.Among the histological components of NAFLD.only steatosis was independently associated with total T(r=-0.331.P=0.003)and cFT levels(r=-0.255.P=0.025).Obese men with.steatohepatitis have even lower cFT levels compared to those without,an association mainly driven by grade of steatosis.Whether this reflects a subgroup of men with a more severe obesity-related phenotype or results from direct relations between hepatic steatosis and sex steroid metabolism needs further investigation.

An increased lung cancer risk is associated with occupational exposure to mixtures of cobalt metal and metallic carbide particles, but when exposure is to cobalt metal alone. The current TLV-TWA was established without consideration of carcinogenicity data. The present study was designed to assess whether an increased cancer risk can be detected in workers currently exposed on average to the TLV-TWA (20 μg/m3).
