Short rotation plantation forestry (SRF) is being widely adopted to increase wood production, in order to m.et global dem.nd for wood products. However, to ensure m.xim.m.gains from.SRF, optim.sed m.nagem.nt regim.s need to be established by integrating robust predictions and an understanding of m.chanism. underlying tree growth. Hybrid ecophysiological m.dels, such as potentially useable light sum.equation (PULSE) m.dels, are useful tools requiring m.nim.l input data that m.et the requirem.nts of SRF. PULSE m.dels have been tested and calibrated for different evergreen conifers and broadleaves at both juvenile and m.ture stages of tree growth with coarse soil and clim.te data. Therefore, it is prudent to question: can adding detailed soil and clim.tic data reduce errors in this type of m.del? In addition, PULSE techniques have not been used to m.del deciduous species, which are a challenge for ecophysiological m.dels due to their phenology. This study developed a PULSE m.del for a clonal Populus tom.ntosa plantation in northern China using detailed edaphic and clim.tic data. The results showed high precision and low bias in height (m. and basal area (m. center dot ha-1) predictions. While detailed edaphoclim.tic data produce highly precise predictions and a good m.chanistic understanding, the study suggested that local clim.tic data could also be em.loyed. The study showed that PULSE m.delling in com.ination with coarse level of edaphic and local clim.te data resulted in reasonably precise tree growth prediction and m.nim.l bias.

Recent world events have em.hasized the need to develop innovative, functional m.terials that will safely neutralize chem.cal warfare （CW） agents in situ to protect m.litary personnel and civilians from.derm.l exposure. Here, we dem.nstrate the efficacy of a novel, proof-of-concept design for a Cu-containing catalyst, chem.cally bonded to a single-wall carbon nanotube （SWCNT） structural support, to effectively degrade an organophosphate sim.lant. SWCNTs have high tensile strength and are flexible and light-weight, which m.ke them.a desirable structural com.onent for unique, fabric-like m.terials. This study aim. to develop a self-decontam.nating, carbon nanotube-derived m.terial that can ultim.tely be incorporated into a wearable fabric or protective m.terial to m.nim.ze derm.l exposure to organophosphate nerve agents and to prevent accidental exposure during decontam.nation procedures. Carboxylated SWCNTs were functionalized with a polym.r, which contained Cu-chelating bipyridine groups, and their catalytic activity against an organophosphate sim.lant was m.asured over tim.. The catalytically active, functionalized nanom.terial was characterized using X-ray fluorescence and Ram.n spectroscopy. Assum.ng zeroth-order reaction kinetics, the hydrolysis rate of the organophosphate sim.lant, as m.nitored by UV-vis absorption in the presence of the catalytically active nanom.terial, was 63 tim.s faster than the uncatalyzed hydrolysis rate for a sam.le containing only carboxylated SWCNTs or a control sam.le containing no added nanotube m.terials.

KAI2-and m.X2-m.diated Responses to Karrikins and Strigolactones Are Largely Independent of HY5 in Arabidopsis Seedlings

Karrikins are butenolide com.ounds released from.burning vegetation that stim.late seed germ.nation and enhance seedling photom.rphogenesis. Strigolactones are structurally sim.lar plant horm.nes that regulate shoot and root developm.nt, and prom.te the germ.nation of parasitic weed seeds. In Arabidopsis, the F-box protein m.X2 is required for responses to karrikins and strigolactones, and the a/~ hydrolase KAI2 is necessary for responses to karrikins. Both m.X2 and KAI2 are essential for norm.l light-dependent seedling developm.nt. The bZIP transcription factor HY5 acts downstream.of m.ltiple photoreceptors and prom.tes photom.rphogenesis, but its relationship with m.X2 and KAI2 in term. of seedling developm.nt and responses to karrikins and strigolactones is poorly defined. Here, we dem. onstrate that HY5 action is genetically separable from.that of m.X2 and KAI2. While by5 m.tants have weak hypoco- tyl elongation responses to karrikins and the artificial strigolactone GR24, they have norm.l transcriptional responses, suggesting that HY5 is not involved in perception or action of karrikins or strigolactones. Furtherm.re, we show that overexpression of KAI2 is sufficient to enhance responses to both karrikins and GR24 in wild-type seedlings, and that KAI2 overexpression partially suppresses the hy5 long hypocotyl phenotype. These results suggest that KAI2 and m.X2 define a regulatory pathway that largely operates independently of HY5 to m.diate seedling responses to abiotic signals such as sm.ke and light.
