Microbial Community with Potential for Metal Release Isolated from Palca Mine Tailings Pond in Peru

The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces Palca mine tailings pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may support the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.

Piezoelectric constant temperature dependence in strained [111]-oriented zinc-blende MQW-SOAs

Here,we present a study of the effective piezoelectric constant(e_(14_(e)))temperature dependence in strained[111]-oriented zinc-blende quantum wells(QWs)embedded within a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA).We determined e_(14_(e)) using a method that was insensitive to the segregation phenomenon and to the temperature dependence of the bandgap energy,which required neither fitting parameters nor temperature-dependent expressions for energy and out-of-plane effective masses of electrons and heavy *** e_(14_(e))=−0.0534±0.0040 C·m^(−2) at 23°C was obtained for an SOA with 1.2 nm[111]-oriented strained In0.687Ga0.313As/In0.807Ga0.193As0.304P0.696 *** previously published research,where e_(14_(e)) magnitude increased as temperature rised,we extracted an e_(14_(e)) magnitude that decreased as temperature increased.

Structural performance assessment of GFRP elastic gridshells by machine learning interpretability methods

The prediction of structural performance plays a significant role in damage assessment of glass fiber reinforcement polymer(GFRP)elastic gridshell *** learning(ML)approaches are implemented in this study,to predict maximum stress and displacement of GFRP elastic gridshell *** ML algorithms,including linear regression(LR),ridge regression(RR),support vector regression(SVR),K-nearest neighbors(KNN),decision tree(DT),random forest(RF),adaptive boosting(AdaBoost),extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost),category boosting(CatBoost),and light gradient boosting machine(LightGBM),are implemented in this *** features of structural performance considered in this study are the maximum stress as f1(x)and the maximum displacement to self-weight ratio as f2(x).A comparative study is conducted and the Catboost model presents the highest prediction ***,interpretable ML approaches,including shapely additive explanations(SHAP),partial dependence plot(PDP),and accumulated local effects(ALE),are applied to explain the *** is employed to describe the importance of each variable to structural performance both locally and *** results of sensitivity analysis(SA),feature importance of the CatBoost model and SHAP approach indicate the same parameters as the most significant variables for f1(x)and f2(x).

Lights for epilepsy:can photobiomodulation reduce seizures and offer neuroprotection?

Epilepsy is synonymous with individuals suffering repeated“fits”or *** seizures are triggered by bursts of abnormal neuronal activity,across either the cerebral cortex and/or the *** addition,the seizure sites are characterized by considerable neuronal *** the factors that generate this abnormal activity and death are not entirely clear,recent evidence indicates that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central *** treatment options include drug therapy,which aims to suppress the abnormal neuronal activity,or surgical intervention,which involves the removal of the brain region generating the seizure ***,~30%of patients are unresponsive to the drugs,while the surgery option is invasive and has a morbidity ***,there is a need for the development of an effective non-pharmacological and non-invasive treatment for this disorder,one that has few side *** this review,we consider the effectiveness of a potential new treatment for epilepsy,known as photobiomodulation,the use of red to near-infrared light on body *** studies in animal models have shown that photobiomodulation reduces seizure-like activity and improves neuronal ***,it has an excellent safety record,with little or no evidence of side effects,and it is *** all together,this treatment appears to be an ideal treatment option for patients suffering from epilepsy,which is certainly worthy of further consideration.

Abscisic acid(ABA)is an important hormone that regulates both plant development and stress responses(Chen et al.,2020).In the absence of ABA,group A PROTEIN PHOSPHATASE 2Cs(PP2Cs)interact with and inhibit SUCROSE-NON-FERMENTING 1-RELATED KINASES 2(SnRK2s).When ABA is present,ABA receptor PYRABACTIN RESISTANCE 1 and PYRABACTIN RESISTANCE 1-LIKE PROTEINS bind to and inhibit PP2Cs,allowing phosphorylation and activation of SnRK2s that,in turn,phosphorylate downstream targets,such as transcription factors,ion channels,and transporters(Figure 1).

Morphologically homogeneous groups,either living populations or fossil paleo-populations,must be regarded as ecological species,independent of their molecular genetic resemblance in living *** is always expressed during development by structure genes initiated from a network of regulator genes acting at different times and intensities,additionally being subjected to epigenetic ***,homogeneous populations influenced by the environment represent species better than the reproduction(biological species)or molecular-genetic approach using ancestral sequences like *** and fossil representatives of nummulitid foraminifera were chosen to demonstrate complete reconstruction of morphology using metrical growth-invariant and growth-independent *** these characters,6 models were established to define ecological species in living and fossil ***,a distinction between evolutionary and environmental effects in fossil forms was possible using discriminant analysis showing characters that are responsible for differentiating between evolutionary and environmental trends.

In recent work,we have shown that cell senescence of mouse fibroblasts in vitro associates with a build-up of cryptic exons in selected mRNAs,whose level is usually controlled by the activity of TAR DNA binding protein of 43 kDa(Tdp-43)(torres et al.,2022).In vivo,we also found traits of cell senescence in the motor neuron disease model achieved by overexpressing SOD-G93A,the SOD1 gene(harboring a single amino acid substitution of glycine to alanine at codon 93).

Numerical modeling of nutrient transport to assess the agricultural impact on the trophic state of reservoirs

A trophic state increase relates to surface water bodies nutrient enrichment,due to the chemical products used such as fertilizers in agriculture and residues from cattle raising *** research consists of nutrient transport numerical modeling to analyze the Betancíreservoir trophic state in Colombia;Water samples were collected to analyze total nitrogen,total phosphorus,ammonia,nitrates,nitrites,phosphates,chlorophyll-a,dissolved oxygen,BOD,COD,suspended solids,and water *** water quality model MOHID Studio was implemented and after its calibration,scenarios of increase and decrease of nutrients and inflows to the reservoir through its main tributaries were simulated to reproduce the agricultural activity changes in the basin and the effects that would have on the reservoir's trophic state dynamics;Therefore,the Carlson Trophic Status Index was calculated for each *** results show that variations in total nitrogen concentration and increased inflows present short-term consequences on the reservoir's trophic *** the incoming total nitrogen con-centrations by 100%causes the reservoir to change from a light eutrophic to a hypereutrophic *** results of this research provide a starting tool to water resources integrated management in reservoirs.
