Bioguided isolation of antimicrobial polyphenols from Cuspidaria convoluta leaves and their synergistic effect with antibiotics

Objective:To identify and isolate phenolic compounds from Cuspidaria convoluta,and to evaluate their antibacterial activity and synergistic effect with ***:The crude extract was prepared by maceration with methanol(5%).The dry extract was suspended in water and fractionated *** most active extract was selected by its antibacterial activity and its total phenol content was determined by spectrophotometry and by HPLC-MS/*** fractions of the most active extract were separated by column chromatography and evaluated by *** compounds were *** inhibitory concentration(MIC)of these compounds was determined by microdilution broth method,and synergism with antibiotics(ampicillin,gentamicin and oxacillin)was tested by checkerboard and time-kill ***:Coumaric acid,catechin/epicatechin,and luteolin were purified and identified from the *** was an increase in the antibacterial activity of antibiotics when they were combined with these *** combination of luteolin and ampicillin had the most potent antibacterial *** MICs of oxacillin for each of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains were reduced between 4 and 8-fold when these strains were coincubated with sub-MIC(≤?MIC)levels of these compounds,demonstrating that the combination had synergistic effect for all ***:Cuspidaria convoluta contains important pharmacologically active substances that can be used to improve antibiotic efficacy.

Antioxidative Effect of Fermented Soybeans Extract in Beef Patties with and without n-3 Fatty Acids

The objectives of the study were： a） to determine the optimal concentration of the extract that should be incorporated in meat products to maintain the lipid oxidative stability, and b） to verify if the extract exerted antioxidant activity even when these products were enriched with soybean oil （with fatty acids omega 3）. To carry out these aims, in the first instance the additive was incorporated into meat patties （elaborated with 80% beef and 20% fat plus 2% salt over total mass） at 0, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 g/kg, respectively. The lipid oxidation was evaluated by measurement of peroxide value during 15 days at 8 ℃ and the results were expressed as reduction percentage of peroxidation （RP）. RP obtained were 55, 49, 73 and 59 respectively. As 5 g/kg was the optimum concentration of antioxidant, this was chosen to add to meat products enriched with soybean oil. In this case the RP obtained was 78%, indicating that the extract decreased lipid oxidation effectively.

European Practice in Gynaecology and Obstetrics is a series of books conceived and endorsed by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG). Its aim is to provide up-to-date, evidence-based information that represents the consensus of opinion among leading European experts in the field, as part of the overall aim of standardising training and practice in order to ensure quality care and facilitate exchange among physicians in all parts of Europe and the rest of the world. The topics chosen for each volume are those of significant clinical interest where treatment is changing in response to research findings and developments in practice. The volume editor and contributing authors are European specialists invited to contribute because of their expertise in their field. The books concentrate on various types of management used in European practice as well as published results. The authors present treatments for which a consensus exists and - when there is no consensus - they discuss the key elements of the controversy. Each book provides a review of the basic science, recent concepts in pathophysiology, clinical aspects, treatment and unresolved problems or controversies, as well as the major recent references. A final section provides multiple-choice questions for each chapter.

Automatic Detection and Measurement of Fetal Biparietal Diameter and Femur Length —Feasibility on a Portable Ultrasound Device

An automatic method able to recognize a presented section through the biparietal plane of the fetal head and a section through the fetal femur in ultrasound images is developed. Once the correct anatomical section for measurement is identified by the machine, the placement of the measurement calipers is automatically determined by fitting an active contour model to the structure of interest. The fetal biparietal diameter (BPD) and femur length (FL) are then measured automatically. The validation data set contained 167 and 197 B-mode images for BPD and FL measurements, respectively. The images were acquired using 4 different ultrasound scanners, which resulted in varied image quality and gain settings. The mean gestational age (GA) of the fetuses was 19.4 weeks, range 16 to 41 weeks. A measurement success rate of 90% was achieved for both BPD and FL. The correlation coefficients between the manual and automatic measurements were 0.995 (BPD) and 0.967 (FL), mean errors were 0.5 mm (BPD) and -1.7 mm (FL) and error range with 95% confidence interval (CI) were ﹣3.8 - 4.8 mm (BPD) and ﹣11.4 - 8.1 mm (FL). The automatic measurement results were consistent in both high and low gain settings. The intraclass correlation coefficients between manual and automatic measurements were 0.995 (95% CI;0.981 - 0.999) for BPD in high gain, 1.0 (95% CI;0.998 - 1.0) for BPD in low gain, 0.998 (95% CI;0.991 - 0.999) for FL in high gain and 0.999 (95% CI;0.996 - 1.0) for FL in low gain settings. The method was implemented on a prototype, portable ultrasound machine designed to be used in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The overall performance of the method supports our hypothesis that automated methods can be used and are beneficial in a clinical setting.

Automatic Measurement of Fetal Abdominal Biometric Parameters—Feasibility on a Portable Ultrasound Device

An automatic method for measuring the fetal mean abdominal diameter (MAD) or abdominal circumference (AC) with ultrasound is proposed. From a correctly presented abdominal section suitable for MAD or AC measurement, the location of fetal abdomen is detected by image processing. Thereafter, an active contour model is converged along the abdominal boundary for measurement purposes. The validation data set contained 310 images of fetuses with gestational age (GA) from 14 to 41 weeks. The measurement success rate was 88.1%. By manually indicating the location of the abdomen, the success rate was further improved to 95.8% for the failed cases. The correlation between manual and automatic measurements was 0.95 and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.976 (95% confidence interval (CI);0.969 - 0.981). The average method execution time was 0.3 s. The mean error was lower in young fetuses (0.4%) than in older fetuses (-2.1%). The proposed cross-platform method was implemented on a portable, low-cost ultrasound machine prototype targeted for low- and middle-income countries (LMIC);the results achieved were comparable to those of other state-of-the-art automatic methods.

Background:In January 2005,Rasulov et *** published"First experience in the use of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)for the treatment of a patient with deep skin burns".Here,we present the first ever treated patient with cadaveric bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(CMSCs)in the history of ***:A young man,who severely burned 60%of his total body surface with 30%of full-thickness burns while working with a grass trimmer that exploded,was involved in the *** were obtained from the bone marrow of a cadaver donor in a routine procurement procedure of CUCAIBA,the Province of Buenos Aires,Argentina,Ministry of Health,Transplantation Agency,cultured,expanded,and applied on the burned surfaces using a fibrin spray after early ***:So far,our preliminary experience and our early results have been very impressive showing an outstanding safety data as well as some impressive good results in the use of ***:Based on al this,we think that improvements in the use of stem cells for burns might be possible in the near future and a lot of time as well as many lives could be saved by many other research teams all over the *** will probably be a real scientific opportunity in Regenerative Medicine as well as in Transplantation.
