Do Dental Self-Care Habits Correlate with Oral Health？

Research evidence substantiating benefits of dental self-care habits is surprisingly limited. This study evaluated associations between dental self-care behaviors and oral health, specifically toothbrushing, flossing, rinsing, chewing xylitol gum, and diet. Soldiers recently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan had dental examinations and answered questionnaires on dental self-care habits. The DoD Oral Health and Readiness Classification System was used to categorize oral health （see manuscript for definitions）. Correlations were assessed between self-care habits and dental classification. Of 266 soldiers, 43 （16%） were Class 1 （excellent）, 191 （72%） Class 2 （acceptable）, 18 （7%） Class 3 （poor）, and 14 （5%） Class 4 （unknown）. Only 63% of soldiers brushed twice or more per day and only half flossed once or more per day. Dental classification improved with toothbrushing （P = 0.05） and adherence to a Mediterranean diet （P = 0.04）. Flossing trended toward correlation （P = 0.11）. Dental classification did not correlate with mouth rinse or xylitol chewing gum. These research findings help fill an evidence gap that toothbrushing and flossing in addition to a healthful eating pattem are associated with improved oral health.

Objective: This review aims to describe the role of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in the pathogenesis of bulimia nervosa (Bn), the perpetuation of this illness and the possibility of its use as a target for future therapeutic advances. Methods: Search for cholecystokinin AnD bulimia nervosa in Pubmed Central, with no limits, identified 38 articles published up to the present date. Results: It is well established that CCK is altered in the pathogenesis of Bn, and that its main role is in the perpetuation of the disorder rather than the cause of it. Discussion: Additional studies will be needed to further understand the mechanisms by which CCK regulates orexigenic pathways. If an orally active, longer acting analogue of CCK could be developed, it would be of significant interest as an appetite suppressant and a key adjuvant in the treatment of patients suffering from Bn, particularly in refractory cases.

A study of invasive strains of Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) from Cordoba and Misiones, Argentina;was conducted to determine serotypes, the susceptibility to macrolides and molecular profiles of virulence and resistance. We studied 17 strains, recovered from cerebrospinal fluid, blood and cellulite and, a strain of trophoblastic remnants from Misiones. The serotypes were determined by agglutination with sera and phenotypes of resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB), were determined with the double-disk test (D-test). The confirmation was performed by E-test by ERI and CLI respectively that determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Results were interpreted as recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2013. Resistance genes: ermB, ermTR and mefA and the virulence genes: bac, bca, rib, lmb, hylB, scpB, fbsA, fbsB and cylB were investigated by conventional PCR. Serotype III (50%) and Ia (50%) were detected in Cordoba. One strain showed cMLSB phenotype, confirmed by MIC. The same strains showed a resistance gene ermB. All studied virulence genes were detected in 100% of these strains. In Misiones, serotypes were III (72.7%), Ia (18.2%) and Ib (9.1%). All strains were susceptible to CLI and ERI by D-test, confirmed by MIC. none of the strains showed resistance genes. Virulence genes bca, rib, hylB, lmb, fbsA, fbsB and cylB were detected in 100% of the strains, bac in 81.8% and scpB in 90.9%. Our results are in accordance with international data, associating higher frequency of serotype III of invasive neonatal disease followed by Ia. The presence of serotype Ib could indicate a regional difference for Misiones. We highlight the macrolides susceptibility in strains of Misiones and consistency in the results for D-test, MIC and PCR for the single strain resistant phenotype cMLSB from Cordoba. The virulence genes studied were presented with high frequency as expected for invasive strains.

Objective:To evaluate whether hypoxia inducible factor(HIF-1α) targeting pharmacological drugs,echinomycin,resveratrol and CdCl_2 which inhibit HIF-1α stimulation,and mimosine,which enhances the stability of HIF-1α present antileishmanial ***:The leishmanicidal effect of drugs was evaluated in mouse macrophages and Balb/c mouse model for cutaneous ***:Resveratrol and CdCl_2 reduced the parasite load [IC50,(27.3±2.25) μM and(24.8±0.95) μM,respectively].The IC50 value of echinomycin was(22.7±7.36) nM and mimosine did not alter the parasite load in primary *** macrophage viability IC50 values for resveratrol,echinomycin and CdCl_2 and mimosine were >40 μM,>100 nM,> 200 μM and>2 000 μM,*** vivo no differences between cutaneous lesions from control,resveratrol-and echinomycin-treated Balb/c mice were ***:Resveratrol,echinomycin and CdCl_2 reduce parasite survival in *** HIF-1α targeting pharmacological drugs require further study to more fully determine their anti-Leishmania potential and their role in therapeutic strategies.

Objective:To investigate the chemical compositions and antimicrobial potentials of the essential oils and oleoresins obtained from fresh and dried Mentha longifolia ***:Gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer techniques were used to determine the profiling of the essential oils and *** order to determine the antimicrobial efficacy of the volatile oil and oleoresins,the pathogenic fungus Aspergillus niger(1884),Aspergillus flavus(2479),Fusarium monoliforme(1893),Fusarium graminearum(2088)and Penicillium viridicatum(2007)were undertaken whereas four pathogenic bacteria Bacillus subtilis(1790),Staphylococcus aureus(3103)(Gram-positive),Escherichia coli(1672),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(1942)(Gram-negative)were selected for the present *** poisoned,inverted Petri plate,agar well diffusion and disk diffusion methods were employed for investigating antimicrobial ***:Piperitenone oxide,an oxygenated monoterpene,dominated the chemical compositions of essential oils and oleoresins whose compositions varied from 23.5%-87.8%.Both essential oils showed good antifungal activities against Aspergillus and Fusarium *** antibacterial investigations revealed that Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive to the essential ***:Drying the fresh herbal materials influences the chemical contents and the biological activities of the essential oils and *** results indicate that essential oils of Mentha longifolia *** be possible candidates for further investigations to isolate and characterize their active principles as possible new natural preservatives.

In this work, we study the influence of the average crystallite size and dopant oxide on the reducibility of CeO2-based nanomaterials. Samples were prepared from commercial Gd2O3-, Sm2O3- and Y2O3-doped CeO2 powders by calcination at different temperatures ranging between 400°C and 900°C and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and BET specific surface area. The reducibility of the samples was analyzed by temperature-programmed reduction and in situ dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. Our results clearly demonstrate that samples treated at lower temperatures, of smallest average crystallite size and highest specific surface areas, exhibit the best performance, while Gd2O3-doped ceria materials display higher reducibility than Sm2O3- and Y2O3-doped CeO2.

The iron concentrate from Hercules Mine of Coahuila,Mexico,which mainly contained pyrite and pyrrhotite,was treated by the bioleaching process using native strain Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans （***） to determine the ability of these bacteria on the leaching of *** native bacteria were isolated from the iron concentrate of the *** bioleaching experiments were carried out in shake flasks to analyze the effects of pH values,pulp density,and the ferrous sulfate concentration on the bioleaching *** results obtained by microbial kinetic analyses for the evaluation of some aspects of zinc leaching show that the native bacteria ***,which is enriched with a 9K Silverman medium under the optimum conditions of pH 2.0,20 g/L pulp density,and 40 g/L FeSO4,increases the zinc extraction considerably observed by monitoring during15 d,i.e.,the zinc concentration has a decrease of about 95% in the iron concentrate.

Secondary metabolites produced by plants can be used in popular medicine, as well they can interact with plants and other organisms, in which case they are called allelochemicals and influence the neighboring ecosystem. This work aimed to evaluate the allelopathic effects of Schinus molle L. species widely used in reforestation and urban afforestation. Therefore, leaves of S. Molle were collected from different populations located at Alfenas and nepomuceno in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cypselae of lettuce （Lactuca sativa L.） were germinated in biochemical oxygen demand （BOD） chamber at 25 ℃ with a photoperiod of 12 h under different extracts concentrations. The experiment was performed in factorial design （2 × 4） with two kinds of extracts （aqueous and ethanol） and four concentrations （2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg/mL） in randomized blocks. The variables analyzed were germination （%）, germination speed index （GS1）, % of normal seedlings, root length, fresh biomass and dry biomass. Changes in the cell cycle in meristematic cells of the used model were also evaluated. Concentration-dependent effect on all parameters was observed, with the exception of dry biomass exposed to ethanol extract. The root elongation parameter was different between the extracts even in lower concentrations, thus indicating that this is the most sensitive parameter of this species. Toxic effect from S. rnolle extracts was observed in all parameters regardless the kind of pruning management or method of extraction （water or ethanol）.
