Evaluation of Glomerular Hyperfiltration and Albuminuria in Sickle Cell Disease Adolescents: Cross-Sectional Retrospective Study

Background: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) renal abnormalities commence early in childhood. The glomerular abnormalities, glomerular hyperfiltration and albuminuria are the most prevalent. However, these SCD glomerulopathies have not been considered exclusively in the adolescent age group. Objective: To determine the prevalence of glomerular hyperfiltration and albuminuria as well as identify the determinants for glomerular hyperfiltration in adolescents with SCD. Patients and Methods: The electronic patient records of 153 adolescents with SCD aged 10 - th to 23rd June 2019. Clinical information and laboratory parameters were obtained. The glomerular filtration rate was derived using the Bedside Schwartz’s method. Grouping of the adolescents was based on the presence and absence of glomerular hyperfiltration, which was defined as glomerular filtration rate > 140 ml/min/m2. The presence of albuminuria was defined as urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio > 3 mg/mmol or protein-to-creatinine ratio of >15 mg/mmol. The clinical and laboratory determinants of glomerular hyperfiltration in the total study population were investigated. Result: Prevalence of glomerular hyperfiltration was 33.3% in the adolescents studied, and that of albuminuria was 15.7% amongst the SCD adolescents studied, of which 13.7% of those with glomerular hyperfiltration also had albuminuria. On univariable analysis, the SCD adolescents with glomerular hyperfiltration had significantly lower weight (48.0 ± 18.0 versus 54.8 ± 17.0 kg;p = 0.02), height (155.1 ± 13.1 versus 160.6 ± 13.1 cm;p = 0.01), body mass index (19.4 ± 5.0 versus 21.0 ± 4.3;p = 0.04), haemoglobin level (88.7 ± 13.3 versus 98.1 ± 21.7 g/L;p = 0.001), and serum creatinine level (0.4 ± 0.1 versus 0.6 ± 0.2 mg/dl;p = 0.0001) as compared to tho

VGI and crowdsourced data credibility analysis using spam email detection techniques

Literary Translation:The Pleasure Principle

Chinese to English literary translation (CELT) has brought enormous reading pleasure to large numbers of people. These readers are not necessarily committed to China or Chinese literature as a cause or profession: they are disinterested readers. Publishers today, such as the Foreign Languages Press, can significantly increase their publication figures and strengthen their impact by going beyond captive readers to reach this wider audience. Guidelines that may lead to such a result can be summed up in the phrase: trust the reader. Readers of literary translations already belong to a limited class: they are risk-takers; they are curious and knowledgeable about other cultures; and they are skilled literary readers in their own language.

Migratory movements of organisms have arisen across diverse phylogenetic lines for millions of years （Alerstam, 1990; Drake and Gatehouse, 1995; Dingle, 1996; Greenberg and Marra, 2005; Newton, 2008）. Some movements are only a matter of centimeters over uneven surfaces, as seen in the amoeba slime mold Dic- tyostelium discoideum （Gilbert et al., 2012）. While at the other extreme the annual aerial routings of about 80,000 km achieved by the arctic tern Sterna paradisea （Egevang et al., 2010） are well known as birds travel between breeding grounds in the arcticand southern oceans to overwinter.

Confining stresses serve as a pivotal determinant in shaping the behavior of grouted rock ***,prior investigations have oversimplified the three-dimensional stress state,primarily assuming hydrostatic stress *** these conditions,it is assumed that the intermediate principal stress(σ_(2))equals the minimum principal stress(σ_(3)).This assumption overlooks the potential variations in magnitudes of in situ stress conditions along all three directions near an underground opening where a rock bolt is *** this study,a series of push tests was meticulously conducted under triaxial *** tests involved applying non-uniform confining stresses(σ_(2)≠σ_(3))to cubic specimens,aiming to unveil the previously overlooked influence of intermediate principal stresses on the strength properties of rock *** results show that as the confining stresses increase from zero to higher levels,the pre-failure behavior changes from linear to nonlinear forms,resulting in an increase in initial stiffness from 2.08 kN/mm to 32.51 kN/*** load-displacement curves further illuminate distinct post-failure behavior at elevated levels of confining stresses,characterized by enhanced ***,the peak load capacity ranged from 27.9 kN to 46.5 kN as confining stresses advanced from σ_(2)=σ_(3)=0 to σ_(2)=20 MPa and σ_(3)=10 ***,the outcomes highlight an influence of confining stress on the lateral deformation of *** levels of confinement prompt overall dilation in lateral deformation,while higher confinements maintain a state of ***,diverse failure modes have been identified,intricately tied to the arrangement of confining *** confinements tend to induce a splitting mode of failure,whereas higher loads bring about a shift towards a pure interfacial shear-off and shear-crushed failure mechanism.

Female cichlid fish living in African great lakes are known to have sensory systems that are adapted to ambient light *** sen-sory system adaptations are hypothesized to have influenced the evolution of the diverse male nuptial *** rock-dwelling Lake Malawi mbuna cichlids,however,the extent to which ambient light environments influence female sensory systems and potentially associated male nuptial coloration remains ***,the ubiquitous blue flank coloration and UV reflection of male mbuna cichlids suggest the potential impacts of the blue-shifted ambient light environment on these cichlid's visual perception and male nuptial coloration in the shallow water depth in Lake *** the present study,we explored whether and how the sensory bias of females influences intersexual communication in the mbuna cichlid,Metriaclima zebra.A series of choice experiments in various light environments showed that *** females (1)have a pref-erence for the blue-shifted light environment,(2)prefer to interact with males in blue-shifted light environments,(3)do not show a preference between dominant and subordinate males in full-spectrum,long-wavelength filtered,and short-wavelength filtered light environments,and (4)show a"reversed"preference for subordinate males in the UV-filtered light *** results suggest that the visual perception of *** females may be biased to the ambient light spectra in their natural habitat by local adaptation and that this sensory bias may influence the evolution of blueand UV reflectivepatterns in male nuptial coloration.

Apparent dissociation of photoperiodic time measurement between vernal migration and breeding under dim green light conditions in Gambel＇s white-crowned sparrow Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii

In seasonally breeding birds, the annual cycle of photoperiod is a principal environmental cue for temporal arrange- ment of different life-history stages, such as migration and breeding. In the past, most research has focused on the mechanisms of photoperiodic control of breeding with less attention paid to migration. In Gambel＇s white-crowned sparrow Zonotrichia leuco- phrys gambelii （GWCS）, photoreceptors for induction of breeding are known to reside in the basal hypothalamus. However, it is unknown whether the sites of photoperiodic reception for vernal migration are the same as those for breeding. Therefore, we hy- pothesized that they may be controlled separately. In this study, we exposed photosensitive GWCSs to low-penetration green light （wavelength at 510 nm） under a regime of 1 lux during the day and 〈0.1 lux at night, and switched the photoperiodic conditions from short day （10 h daytime） to long day （18 h daytime）. The results showed that the experimental birds developed traits associ- ated with vernal migration including mass increase, fat deposition and migratory restlessness behavior when transferred from short day to long day green light cycles, while control birds maintained continuously on short day green light conditions did not ex- press any migration related characteristics. Neither experimental nor control groups showed gonadal recrudescence trader either green light cycles. In support of our hypothesis, we were able to apparently dissociate the photoperiodic responses regulating vernal migra- tion and breeding, which suggests separate mechanisms of photoperiodic time measurement. Such distinct photoperiodic mechanisms may drive the free-tuned temporal arrangement of the two life history stages.

Genome-wide association study （GWAS） has become a widely accepted strategy for decoding genotype- phenotype associations in many species thanks to advances in next-generation sequencing （NGS） technol- ogies. Maize is an ideal crop for GWAS and significant progress has been made in the last decade. This review summarizes current GWAS efforts in maize functional genomics research and discusses future prospects in the omics era. The general goal of GWAS is to link genotypic variations to corresponding dif- ferences in phenotype using the most appropriate statistical model in a given population. The current re- view also presents perspectives for optimizing GWAS design and analysis. GWAS analysis of data from RNA, protein, and metabolite-based omics studies is discussed, along with new models and new popula- tion designs that will identify causes of phenotypic variation that have been hidden to date. The joint and continuous efforts of the whole community will enhance our understanding of maize quantitative traits and boost crop molecular breeding designs.
