The 18th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate was held on 31 May through 2 June *** Antarctic Meteorological Research and Data Center hosted this hybrid workshop at the Pyle Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison,WI,*** members of the Antarctic meteorological community gathered to present and discuss topics from scientific research to operational support within Antarctic meteorology and *** and early career professionals chaired various presentations and discussions while all attendees engaged to share results,build collaborative plans,and discuss further *** main workshop topics included updates on the current Automatic Weather Station(AWS)networks,challenges,and planning concerning Antarctic forecasting and operational services,Antarctic numerical modeling systems,observational applications and research,and Antarctic community and data *** six sessions,over 25 different presenters elaborated on their work in areas such as field season updates,atmospheric rivers,remote sensing,the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System(AMPS),and forecasting challenges due to data *** discussions resulted in several key outcomes and action items regarding fieldwork impacts,exploration of field techniques,observation coverage,and communication between operations and research *** workshops will provide opportunities for continued discussion on the evolution of the AWS network and operational needs while providing a venue to promote collaboration and cooperation for Antarctic meteorology and climate activities.

*** August 2022 marked the 17th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate(WAMC)which was held in a hybrid format at the Pyle Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison(UW-Madison)in Madison,WI,*** workshop is the first partial in-person gathering since the 14th WAMC(Lazzara et al.,2018)as the 15th WAMC was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic,and the 16th WAMC(Bromwich et al.,2022)was purely *** members of the Antarctic meteorological community gathered at this meeting to present and discuss weather-related topics encompassing scientific research and support operations within Antarctic meteorology and *** conversations aimed to share and discuss results,future developments,and build collaborative plans.

Extreme cold temperatures were observed in July and August 2023,coinciding with the WINfLY(winter fly-in)period of mid to late August into September 2023,meaning aircraft operations into McMurdo Station and Phoenix Airfield were adversely ***,with temperatures below−50℃,safe flight operation was not possible because of the risk of failing hydraulics and fuel turning to gel onboard the *** cold temperatures were measured across a broad area of the Antarctic,from East Antarctica toward the Ross Ice Shelf,and stretching across West Antarctica to the Antarctic Peninsula.A review of automatic weather station measurements and staffed station observations revealed a series of sites recording new record low *** separate cold phases were identified,each a few days in duration and occurring from mid-July to the end of August 2023.A brief analysis of 500-hPa geopotential height anomalies shows how the mid-tropospheric atmospheric environment evolves in relation to these extreme cold *** monthly 500-hPa geopotential height anomalies show strong negative anomalies in *** of composite geopotential height anomalies during each of the four cold phases suggests various factors leading to cold temperatures,including both southerly off-content flow and calm atmospheric *** the atmospheric environment that leads to such extreme cold temperatures can improve prediction of such events and benefit Antarctic operations and the study of Antarctic meteorology and climatology.

A review of feed efficiency in swine:biology and application

feed efficiency represents the cumulative efficiency with which the pig utilizes dietary nutrients for maintenance, lean gain and lipid accretion. It is closely linked with energy metabolism, as the oxidation of carbon-containing components in the feed drive all metabolic processes. While much is known about nutrient utilization and tissue metabolism, blending these subjects into a discussion on feed efficiency has proven to be difficult. for example, while increasing dietary energy concentration will almost certainly increase feed efficiency, the correlation between dietary energy concentration and feed efficiency is surprisingly low. This is likely due to the plethora of non-dietary factors that impact feed efficiency, such as the environment and health as well as individual variation in maintenance requirements, body composition and body weight. Nonetheless, a deeper understanding of feed efficiency is critical at many levels. To individual farms, it impacts profitability. To the pork industry, it represents its competitive position against other protein sources. To food economists, it means less demand on global feed resources. There are environmental and other societal implications as well. Interestingly, feed efficiency is not always reported simply as a ratio of body weight gain to feed consumed. This review will explain why this arithmetic calculation, as simple as it initially seems, and as universally applied as it is in science and commerce, can often be misleading due to errors inherent in recording of both weight gain and feed intake. This review discusses the importance of feed efficiency, the manner in which it can be measured and reported, its basis in biology and approaches to its improvement. It concludes with a summary of findings and recommendations for future efforts.

Characterization of yttria-stabilized zirconia films deposited by dip-coating on La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3) substrate:Influence of synthesis parameters

Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ,ZrO_(2)-8%Y2O_(3))films were deposited onto lanthanum strontium manganite(LSM,La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3))substrates using dip-coating process aiming for the application in solid oxide fuel cells(SOfCs).YSZ precursor was prepared by sol-gel method;three values of the organic/inorganic concentration ratio(1,3 and 5)were utilized and the sol viscosity was adjusted(60 mPa·s and 100 mPa·s)before deposition on the *** influence of these synthesis parameters on the structure and morphology of the deposited films was examined by X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The films showed characteristic peaks of LSM,YSZ(with cubic structure)and secondary phases of SrZrO_(3) and La_(2)O_(3).Depending on the synthesis conditions,crack-free,homogeneous and well adhered films were obtained,with thickness of 11-24μm.

Merging bound states in the continuum in an open acoustic resonator

Bound states in the continuum （BICs） are perfectly localized resonances despite embedding in the continuum ***,an isolated BIC is very sensitive to the structure ***,we report merging acoustic BICs in a single open resonator,robust against the structure *** find that both symmetry-protected BIC and friedrich-Wintgen BIC are sustained in a single coupled waveguide-resonator *** varying the height and length of the resonator,these two BICs move toward each other and merge into a single one at a critical *** to an individual BIC,the merged BIC is robust against fabrication error because its Q-factor is proportional to ΔL-4,whereΔL embodies the structure *** essence of this extraordinary phenomenon is perfectly explained by the two-and three-level approximations of the effective nonHermitian ***,we present direct experimental demonstrations of the moving and merging of BICs in a coupled 3D waveguide-resonator,which are evidenced by the vanishing of the linewidth of fano resonance in the transmission *** results may find exciting applications in designing high-quality acoustic sources,sensors and filters.

The integration of gallium nitride(GaN)nanowire light-emitting diodes(nanoLEDs)on flexible substrates offers opportunities for applications beyond rigid solid-state lighting(e.g.,for wearable optoelectronics and bendable inorganic displays).Here,we report on a fast physical transfer route based on femtosecond laser lift-off(fs-LLO)to realize wafer-scale top–down GaN nanoLED arrays on unconventional *** with photolithography and hybrid etching processes,we successfully transferred GaN blue nanoLEDs from a full two-inch sapphire substrate onto a flexible copper(Cu)foil with a high nanowire density(~107 wires/cm2),transfer yield(~99.5%),and *** nanoanalytical measurements were conducted to evaluate the performance and limitations of the fs-LLO technique as well as to gain insights into physical material properties such as strain relaxation and assess the maturity of the transfer *** work could enable the easy recycling of native growth substrates and inspire the development of large-scale hybrid GaN nanowire optoelectronic devices by solely employing standard epitaxial LED wafers(i.e.,customized LED wafers with additional embedded sacrificial materials and a complicated growth process are not required).

Absence of postzygotic isolating mechanisms:evidence from experimental hybridization between two species of tropical sea urchins

Two reef margin species of tropical sea urchins,Echinometra sp.C(Ec) and Echinometra oblonga(Eo),occur sympatrically on Okinawa intertidal reefs in southern *** between these species was examined through a series of cross-fertilization *** limited sperm concentrations,where conspecific crosses reached near 100% fertilization,both heterospecific crosses showed high fertilization rates(81%-85%).The compatibility of the gametes demonstrated that if gamete recognition molecules are involved in fertilization of these species,they are not strongly *** found that conspecific crosses reached peak fertilization levels much faster than did heterospecific crosses,indicating the presence of a prezygotic barrier to hybridization in the *** survival,metamorphosis,and juvenile and adult survival of hybrid groups were nearly identical to those of their parent *** from crosses in both directions developed normally through larval stages to sexually mature adults,indicating that neither gametic incompatibility nor hybrid inviability appeared to maintain reproductive isolation between these *** adults,Ec×Ec crosses gave the highest live weight,followed by Eo(ova)×Ec(sperm),Ec(ova)×Eo(sperm),and Eo×*** growth performance measures(viz.,test size,Aristotle's lantern length,and gonad index) of hybrid groups and their parental siblings showed the same *** phenotypic color patterns of the hybrids were closer to the maternal coloration,whereas spine length,tube-foot and gonad spicule characteristics,pedicellaria valve length,and gamete sizes showed intermediate *** f 1 hybrids were completely fertile and displayed high fertilization success in f 1 backcrosses,eliminating the likelihood that hybrid sterility is a postzygotic mechanism of reproductive ***,intensive surveys failed to find hybrid individuals in the field,suggesting the lack or rarity of natural *** stron
