Carbon nanomaterials offer excellent prospects as therapeutic agents,and among them,graphene quantum dots(GQDs)have gained considerable interest thanks to their aqueous solubility and intrinsic fluorescence,which enable their possible use in theranostic approaches,if their biocompatibility and favorable pharmacokinetic are *** prepared ultra-small GQDs using an alternative,reproducible,top-down synthesis starting from graphene oxide with a nearly 100%*** materials were tested to assess their safety,demonstrating good biocompatibility and ability in passing the ultrafiltration barrier using an in vitro *** leads to renal excretion without affecting the ***,we studied the GQDs in vivo biodistribution confirming their efficient renal clearance,and we demonstrated that the internalization mechanism into podocytes is ***,considering the reported characteristics,it appears possible to vehiculate compounds to kidneys by means of GQDs,overcoming problems related to lysosomal degradation.

Saffron(Crocus sativus l.)has been traditionally used in food preparation and as a medicinal *** currently has numerous therapeutic properties attributed to it,such as protection against ischemia,as well as anticonvulsant,antidepressant,anxiolytic,hypolipidemic,anti-atherogenic,anti-hypertensive,antidiabetic,and anti-cancer *** addition,saffron has remarkable beneficial properties,such as anti-apoptotic,anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities,due to its main metabolites,among which crocin and crocetin stand ***,increasing evidence underwrites the possible neuroprotective role of the main bioactive saffron constituents in neurodegenerative diseases,such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases,both in experimental models and in clinical studies in ***,saffron supplementation is being tested for ocular neurodegenerative pathologies,such as diabetic retinopathy,retinitis pigmentosa,age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma,among others,and shows beneficial *** present article provides a comprehensive and up to date report of the investigations on the beneficial effects of saffron extracts on the main neurodegenerative ocular pathologies and other ocular *** review showed that saffron extracts could be considered promising therapeutic agents to help in the treatment of ocular neurodegenerative diseases.

Objective: To evaluate the trypanocidal, leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activity of Eugenia jambolana(E. jambolana) and Eugenia uniflora(E. uniflora) extracts and ***: The products were characterized by lC–MS. Antiparasitic assays were performed and cytotoxicity was evaluated in fibroblastos. In vitro assays were performed using spectrophotometric evaluation. All assays were performed in ***: The results showed that the extracts and the tannic fraction from E. jambolana inhibited 100% of the epimastigote lines. The ethanolic extract was the most efficient in all concentrations tested against the three parasite strains. In the cytotoxicity assay the flavonoid fraction showed low toxicity. All E. uniflora samples showed cytotoxicity at the highest concentration tested, but the extract showed no toxic effect on the fibroblasts at the lowest concentration. The flavonoid and tannic fractions were more efficient against leishmania braziliensis promastigotes compared to the extract. However, the extracts and the tannic fraction were more effective against leishmania infantum strains. The effect on epimastigote cells was observed at all concentrations tested, with all E. uniflora samples. However, the samples were more effective at the highest concentration, where there was inhibition in 100% of the Trypanosoma cruzi ***: The species E. jambolana and E. uniflora presented antiparasitic activity against all tested parasite strains, indicating that these species can serve as an alternative therapy as they were efficient in the tests performed. The E. uniflora extract and the E. jambolana flavonoid fraction presented a low cytotoxicity, opening the floor for new biological studies.

Absence of Expression of OCT-2 in Gastric Cancer Cells

OCT-2, a member of the POU homeodomain family of transcription factors, has been implicated in gastric cancer lymph node metastasis on a single publication so far. Other members of the same family of transcription factors were found to have a role in intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer (OCT-1) and in trophectoderm differentiation of embryonic stem cells (OCT3/4) via modulation ofCDX2. These findings prompted us to evaluate whether OCT-2 could in fact have a role in gastric oncogenesis and lymph node metastasis in human gastric cancer, designing an immunohistochemistry study of the putative expression of OCT-2 on human gastric cancer tissue of 69 surgical archival specimens of intestinal and diffuse type. We could not find expression of OCT-2 on any of our cancer tissues, metaplasia or normal gastric mucosa despite the expression of OCT-2 on tonsil lymphatic cells (tissue test) and normal lymph nodes. We concluded that, based on immunohistochemistry, OCT-2 does not have a role in gastric oncogenesis nor does have any relationship with lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer.

Optimal Coordinated Operation of Distributed Static Series Compensators for Wide-area Network Congestion Relief

Relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of modern power systems, especially in the presence of intermittent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-time coordinated operation of distributed static series compensators(DSSCs) to remove network congestions by suitable modifications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to minimize the number of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power exchanged, leading to a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Then, a heuristic methodology combining the solution of a regular NlP with k-means clustering algorithm is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchmark systems, providing feasible and sufficiently optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame for practical systems.

Analysis of foundation sliding of an arch dam considering the hydromechanical behavior

Determining the altitude of mountains is one of the most fundamental challenges for ***,the main objective of the study is to determine the altitudes of the three main summits in Ecuador through GNSS positioning,referring to the official vertical datum of Ecuador and the geo-potential surface(W_(o)).The three peaks are active volcanoes named Chimborazo,Cotopaxi and Cayambe,all of which are known to be over 5700 m above sea *** GNSS was performed on the summit of the volcanoes,and the GPS leveling method was applied on nearby *** these summits,the correction of the potential difference between the mean sea level and W_(o) was *** altitudes referred to the mean sea level were compared with other registered heights,and the results are more accurate than previous geodetic missions.

Credit Guarantee and the Impact in Financial Structure of the

The aim of this work is to show the relevance of guarantees provided by the Mutual Credit Guarantee System （GS—the Portuguese Society of Credit Guarantee （SPGM）） as an instrument used in the financing of Small and edium Enterprises （SMEs）, especially in restructuring long-Term Debt （lTD） and bank loans. The studyprovides empirical evidence and puts forward an explanatory model of the influence of the mutual creditguarantees on the financing of SMEs. Using data obtained from the MCGS, for the CAE （economic activity） 412（construction of buildings, which is the sector with the greatest number of companies seeking this type of financing） and the SABI database （system for analysis of Iberian financial statements）, a multiple regressionmodel was made, studying the impact that mutual guarantees have in the financial structure of the SMEs. The results obtained show that lTD financing is positively influenced by the guarantees provided by the MCGS to SMEs as it allows greater debt capacity, especially in the medium and long term, for firms that usually cannotobtain this type of financing. The results also suggest that this type of guarantees creates an environment of confidence among all stakeholders involved, showing that both in terms of overall capital structure and in terms of erely financial credit, the response from the explanatory variables in the models was consistent with the beginning xpectations, that the financial gap has been reduced with the contribution of mutual guarantees in the fnancingprocess.

The current pressure on the built historical heritage requires a global evaluation to develop strategies for its preservation.A combined vision of the state of conservation of architectural heritage is essential to highlight the vulnerabilities of the structure from which harmonized measures can be proposed for its *** study proposes a multi-criteria analysis methodology that considers a qualitative and quantitative approach to organize the global conservation state of heritage buildings hierarchically.A global index can be determined on the basis of the generation of an interoperable data matrix by defining a set of indicators to assess different components of a *** index describes the risk with respect to the stability,safety,and habitability of the *** methodology aims to achieve the state of the building in an integral way by obtaining a simple and objective index that enables efficient comparison among different *** application of this methodology to a historic area allows creating a hierarchical map of risk to stablish priorities for intervention and enable a sustainable and critical management and planning over the actions of maintenance,conservation,and *** this way,a holistic vision of the complex reality of built heritage and the urban landscape is obtained to identify critical areas of priority intervention.
