Increased hepatic expression of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰreceptor in chronic hepatitis C

AIM： Although increased insulin-like growth factor-I receptor （IGF-IR） gene expression has been reported in hepatocellular carcinoma, studies assessing IGF-IR in chronic hepatitis C （CHC） and cirrhosis are scarce. We therefore aimed to evaluate IGF-IR and IGF-I rnRNA expression in liver from patient with CHC. METHODS： IGF-IR and IGF-I rnRNA content were determined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and IGF-IR protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in hepatic tissue obtained from patients with CHC before （34 patients） and after （10 patients） therapy with interferon-α and ribavirin. RESULTS： An increase of IGF-IR rnRNA content was observed in hepatic tissue obtained from all CHC patients as well as from 6 cadaveric liver donors following orthopic transplantation （an attempt to evaluate normal livers） in comparison to normal liver, while no relevant modifications were detected in IGF-I mRNA content. The irnrnunohistochemical results showed that the raise in IGF-IR rnRNA content was related both to ductular reaction and to increased IGF-IR expression in hepatocytes. A decrease in IGF-IR rnRNA content was observed in patients who achieved sustained virological response after therapy, suggesting an improvement in hepatic damage. CONCLUSION： The up-regulation of IGF-IR expression in hepatocytes of patients with CHC could constitute an attempt to stimulate hepatocyte regeneration. Considering that liver is the organ with the highest levels of IGF-I, our finding of increased IGF-IR expression after both acute and chronic hepatic damage highlights the need for additional studies to elucidate the role of IGF-I in liver regeneration.

Slope Processes, Mass Movement and Soil Erosion： A Review

Soil erosion and land degradation are global problems and pose major issues in many countries. Both soil erosion and mass movement are two forms of land degradation and humans play important roles in these geomorphological processes. This paper reviews slope processes associated with mass movement and soil erosion and contributory factors, including physical and human agents. Acting together, these cause diverse geomorphological features. Slope processes are illustrated by reference to case studies from Brazil and UK. The causes and impacts of erosion are discussed, along with appropriate remedial bioengineering methods and the potential of the measures to prevent these types of environmental degradation. Although there are several agents of erosion, water is the most important one. Cultivation can promote soil erosion, due to ploughing and harvesting, which moves soil down slopes. Soil erosion and mass movement data would inform the viability of soil conservation practices. Integrated management of drainage basins offers a Dromising way forward for effective soil conservation and soil remedial bioengineering in Brazil and UK.

Antifungal activity of plant extracts with potential to control plant pathogens in pineapple

Objective:To evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of extracts,resins,oils and mother tinctures from plants against the filamentous fungi Fusarium guttiforme(***)and Chalara paradoxa,and to evaluate the control of the pineapple fusariosis in situ using mother ***:The screening of the antifungal potential of 131 extract forms from 63 plant species was performed in vitro by using plate-hole *** control pineapple fusariosis in situ,preventive and post-infection treatments were performed on detached pineapple leaves of ***(susceptible).Results:The quantitative study indicated that among the 49 mother tincture samples analyzed,46% were effective against *** and 29% for the Chalara *** natural plant extracts,mother tincture of Glycyrrhiza glabra(MTGG1),mother tincture of Myroxylon balsamum(MTBT2),mother tincture of Aloe vera(MTAV3),mother tincture of Allium sativum(MTAS4),resin of Protium heptaphyllum(RESAM5) and crude extracts of Rhizophora mangle(CEMV6),exhibited an antifungal activity against *** the preventive treatment against pineapple fusariosis,MTAV3,MTAS4 and MTGG1 were statistically similar to the treatment with tebuconazol *** curative treatments with MTAV3,MTAS4,MTGG1 and MTBT2 presented similar activity to fungicide(P < 0.05).Conclusions:The findings of the present study concluded that mother tinctures can effectively control *** mother tincture extract of Myroxylon balsamum showed antifungal activity and was used here for the first time for inhibition of phytopathogenic *** study paves the way for the development of bioactive natural products with phytosanitary applications,with the added benefits of an environmentally safe and economically viable product.

The municipality of Boa Nova,in northeastern Brazil,is in an ecotone zone between the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest phytogeographic *** transition phytophysiognomy is seasonal forest and known locally as mata de cipó.In these phytophysiognomies there are lajedos,which are rock outcrops colonized by vegetation welladapted to extreme microclimatic variation and vegetation diversity is affected by the vegetation types of the surrounding *** to the singularity of these environments and the relevance of floristic studies for conservation,this work aimed to identify the species richness and compare the similarity of the flora on four rock outcrops in Boa *** flora was surveyed during exploratory walks along lajedos between 2016 and *** total,162 species were identified on the Boa Nova *** flora has a composition and structure similar to semiarid outcrops,as well as endemic species that also occur in surrounding *** the proximity,a similarity index revealed there is floristic dissimilarity between the *** new occurrences were recorded for the region,five species are threatened with extinction(Aosa gilgiana,Ficus cyclophylla,Hippeastrum stigmovittatum,Pleroma caatingae and Trixis pruskii),and 43 species are common in anthropogenic *** reinforces the importance of actions to conserve these areas.

Carcinosarcoma(CS),also known as metaplastic breast carcinoma with mesenchymal differentiation,is one of the five distinct subtypes of metaplastic breast *** is considered as a mixed,biphasic neoplasm consisting of a carcinomatous component combined with a malignant nonepithelial element of mesenchymal origin without an intermediate transition *** cellular origin of this neoplasm remains controversial,most researchers declare that neoplastic cells derive from a cellular structure with potential biphasic *** recent research on the therapeutic strategies against CS neoplastic disorders,surgical resection appears the only potentially curative *** CS metastasize by the lymphatic route,axillary assessment with sentinel lymph node biopsy and/or axillary lymph node dissection is always ***,the tumor also presents a hematogenous metastatic pattern including pleural,pulmonary,liver,brain and less commonly bone ***,surgical removal of breast CS does not necessarily ensure patient’s long-term ***,alternative therapies,such as radio-and chemotherapy proved insufficient and 5-year survival rate is ***,there is evidence that following surgery,the combination of radio and chemotherapy is associated with a better prognosis than either treatment *** aim of this review is to evaluate the results of surgical treatment for breast CS with special reference to the extent of its histological *** features,histogenesis,morphological and immunochemical findings are discussed,while the role of current diagnostic and therapeutic management of this aggressive neoplasm is emphasized.

Nested multiplex PCR for identification and detection of human Plasmodium species including Plasmodium knowlesi

Objective:To develop a new technique for diagnosis of Plasmodium knowlesi and at the same time to be able to discriminate among the diverse species of Plasmodium causing human ***:In this study the nested multiplex malaria PCR was redesigned,targeting the 18S rR NA gene,to identify the fifth human Plasmodium species,Plasmodium knowlesi,together with the other human Plasmodium(Plasmodium falciparum,Plasmodium vivax,Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae)by amplified fragment size using only two amplification processes and including an internal reaction control to avoid false ***:The technique was validated with 91 clinical samples obtained from patients with malaria compatible *** technique showed high sensitivity(100%)and specificity(96%)when it was compared to the reference method employed for malaria diagnosis in the Instituto de Salud Carlos栿and a published real-time PCR malaria ***:The technique designed is an economical,sensitive and specific alternative to current diagnosis ***,the method might be tested in knowlesi-malaria endemic areas with a higher number of samples to confirm the quality of the method.

K-Corruption Intermittent Attacks for Violating the Codiagnosability

In this work, we address the codiagnosability analysis problem of a networked discrete event system under malicious attacks. The considered system is modeled by a labeled Petri net and is monitored by a series of sites, in which each site possesses its own set of sensors, without requiring communication among sites or to any coordinators. A net is said to be codiagnosable with respect to a fault if at least one site could deduce the occurrence of this fault within finite steps. In this context, we focus on a type of malicious attack that is called stealthy intermittent replacement attack. The stealthiness demands that the corrupted observations should be consistent with the system's normal behavior, while the intermittent replacement setting entails that the replaced transition labels must be recovered within a bounded of consecutive corrupted observations(called as K-corruption intermittent attack). Particularly, there exists a coordination between attackers that are separately effected on different sites, which holds the same corrupted observation for each common transition under attacks. From an attacker viewpoint, this work aims to design Kcorruption intermittent attacks for violating the codiagnosability of systems. For this purpose, we propose an attack automaton to analyze K-corruption intermittent attack for each site, and build a new structure called complete attack graph that is used to analyze all the potential attacked paths. Finally, an algorithm is inferred to obtain the K-corruption intermittent attacks, and examples are given to show the proposed attack strategy.

Sweet syndrome and differentiation syndrome in a patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia

The differentiation syndrome is an inflammatory reaction with increased capillary permeability that occurs in up to 25% of patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia treated with all-trans retinoic acid. A 50-year-old man with acute promyelocytic leukemia underwent chemotherapy with idarubicin and all-trans retinoic acid. On day +21 the patient developed pruritic prepatelar papules as well as several 10 mm subcutaneous nodules in both thighs accompanied by persistent fever. On the day +25 the patient presented with bilateral pulmonary crackles, infiltrates in the right lower lobe and severe hypotension which required dopamine infusion. Biopsy of one of the thighs nodules was performed. A Sweet syndrome associated to a differentiation syndrome was suspected. All-trans retinoic acid therapy was discontinued and dexamethasone was administered. In 48 h the patient showed remission of the fever and the infiltrates and the skin lesions acquired a residual aspect. It is debatable whether these two syndromes are distinct entities with common mechanisms or whether they are poles of the same spectrum. Dermatologists and hematologists must be aware of these two syndromes and its pathophysiologic association.
